• Little Jeffy of the popular Family Circus comic strip
is almost 50 years old in real life. When he was a tot,
his cartoonist father Bil Keane followed him around
the house for inspiration, hoping he’d do something
humorous. While the Keane family consists of Bil, wife
Thelma, and five children, the cartoon version stopped at
four, since one extra kid wouldn’t fit in the small circular
panel!
• Fred MacMurray had a special arrangement with Don
Fedderson Productions, the company behind his long-
running TV series My Three Sons: all of his scenes for
each season would be filmed over the course of 65 non-
consecutive days. MacMurray requested the abbreviated
schedule so that he could spend time at home with his
four children, and never be away from them two days in
a row.
• At the ripe old age of 60, Britain’s Prince Charles is
still learning lessons from his sons. During a photo
shoot in 2005, one week before his marriage to Camilla
Parker Bowles, the Prince of Wales didn’t realize that
a microphone was picking up his muttered remarks. “I
hate doing this,” Charles griped quietly. His son Prince
William whispered, “Just keep smiling.” After a reporter
inquired whether Charles would have a “stag night”
party, he looked confused. In a hushed voice, his other
son, Prince Harry, clued him in.
• Most little boys (and many girls too) love it when Dad
comes home from work and isn’t too tired to play some
catch before dinner. How much more thrilling would it
be to toss the ball around when your dad is three-time
major league all-star Ken Griffey Sr.? “He was just
dad,” Junior later said, “and baseball was just his job.”
Even though Ken Senior spent his workdays batting and
fielding, he always had time to play catch with Junior
and many of the other neighborhood kids.
• The 2006 film The Pursuit of Happyness told the true
story of Chris Gardner, who had sole custody of his
two-year-old son while he worked as an unpaid intern
for the Dean Witter investment firm. Homeless at times,
the two slept in subway stations and shelters when
necessary. Today, the adult Chris Gardner Jr. says that he
didn’t realize that he and his dad were homeless; he just
knew that “they moved around a lot.” He also says that
his most important memory from those days is that his
father was “always there” for him.
• Robert Reed made no secret of his distaste for his role as
the father on the sitcom The Brady Bunch. He thought
the plots were ridiculous and the scripts far too slapstick.
Off-camera, however, he loved his six TV “children”
and gave them lavish gifts, including a trip to England.
He wanted the kids to see Shakespeare’s birthplace and
to experience some “real” theatre on the London stage.
• Hank Ketcham was struggling to launch a career as
a freelance cartoonist when his wife stormed into his
home studio one afternoon. The couple’s four-year-
old son, Dennis, had trashed his bedroom after being
put down for his nap. “Your son is a menace!” Mrs.
Ketcham shouted. Inspiration struck, and before long,
Dennis the Menace was syndicated to 250 newspapers
worldwide.
• Even when Gene Simmons of KISS wears his legendary
platform boots, his son Nick still towers over him. The
bassist has put his family in the spotlight via the reality
series Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, and Nicholas
(who stands 6’-7” in his stocking feet) has stolen the
spotlight from his famous dad, particularly amongst
female viewers. And that’s not an easy task when your
rock star/huckster father has his face plastered on an
estimated 3,462 different products.
• Dad’s Root Beer was founded in Chicago in 1937 by
Jules Klapman and his father, Ely. However, the “Dad”
in the company name refers to Jules’ grandfather, who
used to make root beer at home and passed down his
recipe. Dad’s Root Beer was the first beverage product
to be sold in six-packs.
• When Jeff Franklin first conceived the idea for the
sitcom Full House, he envisioned Bob Saget in the
role of patriarch Danny Tanner. But when it came time
to film the pilot, Saget was under contract to CBS for
their Morning Program. Instead, an actor named John
Posey was hired for the role. He played Danny in the
pilot episode. By the time ABC picked up Full House,
Saget had been let go by CBS and was available. Poor
John Posey, who was in the process of packing up his
belongings in Florida and moving to Los Angeles for
the job, was informed by phone that his services were
no longer required.
• The U.S. Congress appointed a toothless, arthritic male
as America’s “Father of the Year” in 1972. Yes, it’s true.
The male in question was Frasier, an elderly lion who
had been rescued and donated to California’s African
Lion Safari. Frasier was settled with a pride of lionesses
in order to protect him from aggressive males. In sunny
California, despite his age and failing health, Frasier
managed to sire 22 cubs in one year.
• Popeye the Sailor Man didn’t meet his father until he
was an adult – Poopdeck Pappy had been imprisoned
on Goon Island since Popeye’s birth. The pair never
had a particularly close relationship after they were
reunited; Pappy’s reaction when first meeting his son
was “I don’t likes relatives.” Popeye became a doting
(adoptive) father in 1936, when a cute foundling known
as Swee’pea was left on his doorstep.

Dragway at Lowe’s Taking Shape

When Bruton Smith opens his new quarter-mile
dragstrip at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway complex,
it will complete one of the finest complexes in the
world. In addition to the 1.5-mile quad oval, the
Lowe’s Motor Speedway complex includes a a
beautiful half-mile dirt oval; 2.25-mile road course
and a six-tenths-mile karting layout in the speed-
way’s infield; a quarter-mile asphalt oval utilizing
part of the speedway’s front stretch and pit road; and
a one-fifth-mile oval located outside Turn 3 of the
speedway.
The “Dragway at Lowe’s Motor Speedway” facil-
ity will open Sept. 11-14 with the inaugural NHRA

The city of Charlotte, N.C., continues to be the No.
1 region in the world for racing, as it houses most
all of the major Sprint Cup teams in and around the
area, and auto racing is responsible for pumping
some $6 billion into the local economy each year.

Childress also drove in NASCAR’s top division

1 cup Splenda Granular
12 (2 1/2-inch) graham cracker squares
2 (8-ounce) packages Philadelphia fat-free
cream cheese
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 cup Land O Lakes no-fat sour cream
2 eggs or equivalent in egg substitute
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

9. Don’t be cheap. Use parts approved by the
manufacturer or that come from a source you trust.
Develop a relationship with the shop that repairs

10. Keep records. Save all of your bills, receipts,

Here is a special treat you can serve to Dad

Directions
In a medium bowl, combine 2 cups frozen blueberries
and 1/2 cup Splenda. Allow to set on counter until blue-
berries thaw, stirring occasionally.
Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray a 9-by-9-inch cake pan
with butter-flavored cooking spray. Evenly arrange 9
graham crackers in prepared cake pan. In a large bowl,
stir cream cheese with a sturdy spoon until soft. Add
remaining 1/2 cup Splenda, flour, sour cream, eggs and
vanilla extract. Mix well using a wire whisk. Fold in
remaining 1 cup frozen blueberries. Evenly spread bat-
ter over “crust.” Crush remaining 3 graham crackers.
Evenly sprinkle crumbs over top of filling. Bake for 45
minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out
clean. Place cake pan on a wire rack and allow to cool
for 15 minutes.
Refrigerate both cheesecake and thawed blueberry mix-
ture for 2 hours. Cut dessert into 8 servings. For each
serving, place 1 piece of dessert on a dessert plate and
spoon about 1/4 cup blueberry mixture over top.
HINT: Good served with Cool Whip Lite. Don’t forget
to count the additional calories.
• Each serving: 162 calories, 2g fat, 11g protein,
25g carbs, 381mg sodium, 194mg calcium, 2g fiber;
Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Meat, 1 Starch, 1/2 Fruit; Carb

Agent Orange
and Hypertension
If you suffer from hypertension and believe it
to be service-connected and related to Agent
Orange, get ready to file your claim.
A 2006 Institute of Medicine report hinted
that Agent Orange plays a role in the number
of veterans having hypertension. The report,
requested by Congress in the Agent Orange
Act of 1991, was part seven of an ongoing
study to determine the long-term health
effects of exposure to Agent Orange. It added
hypertension as a condition with “limited
or suggestive evidence of association with
exposure.” Unfortunately, a committee
couldn’t agree, and hypertension was left in
the “inadequate or insufficient evidence of an
association” category.
Now it appears that the Department of
Veterans Affairs is leaning toward accepting
hypertension as a service-related illness.
There’s nothing on the VA site yet, but then it
still has information dated 2003 and 2004.
At this point, no one is saying that all claims
will be automatically approved, but the door is
open. If your claim is filed and the VA decides
to approve hypertension as a service-connected
illness, you’ll be that much ahead.
And you didn’t have to be in Vietnam to be
exposed to Agent Orange. A chart on the VA
Web site lists Florida, Georgia, Arkansas,
Indiana, Texas, Maryland, Hawaii and others
as places where Agent Orange was used.
This chart is 10 pages long and lists dozen
of chemicals as well as the dates, including
the original experiments to test Agent Orange
as an herbicide, going back to the 1940s and
1950s.

HOLLYWOOD ... It was a very different Paris Hilton who
appeared a few weeks back on “The Late Show.” Not at
all like the flighty blonde who flitted up and down Sunset
Boulevard and drank it up in nightclubs. Smartly coiffed
and beautifully dressed, she was very businesslike, talking
about her upcoming movie and her businesses. And David
Letterman fawned apologetically all over her for pressing
her about prison in a previous interview. And no, I haven’t
yet found out what’s in that black
cup that sits on his desk. He takes an
occasional sip, and so do his guests.
Some viewers say it’s water, but
others say coffee. I “ain’t” saying
till I’m sure, but mayhap a bit of
bourbon or vodka? However, or
whatever, let’s hope Paris continues
to behave (although there is much
more to write about when she
doesn’t).
Disney’s “The Chronicles of
Narnia: Prince Caspian” is pulling
in kids of all ages, plus their mamas
and papas. If you haven’t seen this
saga, do it now! And, of course,
if you’re coming out this way
for a visit, be sure and take your
kids to Disneyland. It’s always a
wonderment!
Steven Spielberg loves billboards. After he makes a movie
he personally sees that humongous billboards advertising
that movie are all over everywhere. And regarding Mr. S.,
quite a few years back I was president of the Hollywood
Woman’s Press Club, and this young man named Steven
Spielberg had just made a picture called “Jaws.” He was
invited to be our luncheon speaker to plug his picture.
He came and sat next to me on the dais. You never saw a
more nervous person in your entire life. Before we got to
dessert he had bitten every fingernail down to the quick,
and he was shaking like a leaf. Just a short speech in front
of about 60 people, but he was a wreck. I finally calmed
Father’s Day was first celebrated in 1910, but it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard
Nixon designated the third Sunday in June as the official national observance.

of course, to be an actress. Diane would
come over to my apartment and pace
up and down the living-room floor
ranting, “I want to be an actress!” She
did become an actress, married Bruce
Dern, had Laura, divorced Bruce, later
remarried and is living happily out here.
To get back to Laura, she has always had
her own look when not acting. Jeans, a
T-shirt and short blond hair. Not so on
that recent “Late Show.” There she was,
just like all the rest. The little black dress
exposing legs and lots of top, and long
blond hair, which she kept tossing like
all the others. Which makes me wonder
that maybe the ladies are told to wear
those “nothing dresses and long blond
hair.”

How Will You Spend Your

Stimulus Check?

Some of you have already received your stimulus
rebate checks from the federal government. Others
will get theirs in the next few weeks. Everyone
should have theirs by mid-July. How are you going
to spend your rebate?
Polls show that, despite the hope that consumers
will jumpstart the economy by quickly spending
the money, most are opting to make smarter
choices. Here’s what the experts recommend, and
what most consumers say they will do: Pay off a
high-interest credit card, or put the money into
savings.
Retailers, however, have geared up to help you
spend the money by offering special deals.
Some will cash the check and give you a 10 percent
bonus if you convert the whole amount to a gift
card to be spent only in that store.
Some will cash your check with no strings attached
and give you money off a large purchase made in
the store.
Some will cash your check, give you a percentage
off a large purchase, and put the balance of the
seven times, winning five. 7. The time span was 1937 to 1949.

As for the size of the check, it’s not difficult to
calculate how much you’ll receive. If single, your
rebate will be $600. Married couples filing jointly
will get $1,200. Each child under age 17 who is
claimed as a dependent will add $300 to the check.
Some seniors and disabled veterans will receive
$300 if they file, even though they don’t usually
file because of low income.
The timetable to send out the rebates is broken
down into categories by last two digits of Social
Security numbers, with the higher numbers going
out later. All checks should be mailed by July 11.
If you think you should have received your rebate
and you don’t have it yet, go to the Internal Revenue
Service Web site [www.irs.gov] and click on the
Where’s My Refund link. You’ll need to have
the following information ready: Social Security
number, filing status and the number of exemptions
on your 2007 return. (Note: Unless your check is
due to be sent within a week, or has already been
sent, you won’t get any information.)

More than a thousand nuns, priests and religious
brothers in 12 states have done us a big favor dur-
ing the past years. They’ve been involved in the
Rush Religious Orders Study, an ongoing project
about memory problems, cognitive decline and
the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
Each year since the Rush project started in 1993,
all of the participants are retested and the clini-
cal data collected. By the time the project ends in
2011, researchers will have 17 years of data on
1,100 people.
One of the things that’s recently come to light in
the Rush study is that certain common drugs may
cause cognitive skills and memory loss in seniors
to decline more rapidly. This sub-study was re-
ported at the 60th annual meeting of the American
Academy of Neurology. One type of drug -- anti-
cholinergic -- seems to be the culprit.
The eight-year sub-study looked at 870 nuns and
members of the clergy who did not have demen-

Who Says
Dads Don’t
Count?
You don’t have to watch much television to see how
fathers are portrayed in the media these days. Some
of the most popular sit-coms characterize men as
unintelligent, head-in-the-clouds, lazy, juvenile and
single-minded people. And if the program is about a
family, the dad is certainly less valuable to the family
than is the mother.
My children pointed this out to me a couple of years
ago, and for a while we made a little game out of
identifying shows that did this. We didn’t necessarily
change the channel, but it heightened our awareness of
the message Hollywood is sending us.
What my children are viewing is a far cry from what I
grew up watching. Mister Rogers and Michael Land-
on, the father on “Little House on the Prairie,” were
my ideal father figures. But the message many kids are
getting from the television today is that dads are really
not dependable and they don’t count.
But we know better. Fathers are important, and there
are a lot of dads building strong families, whether it’s
in a traditional family, on his own in a shared custody
arrangement, or in a blended family situation.
Last spring I attended a conference titled Celebrating
Families: Understanding Fathers. Guest speaker John
Chacon, consultant for Child Inc.’s Texas Supporting
Healthy Marriage Initiative, said fathers are just as

for stomach cramps, ulcers, motion sickness and
urinary incontinence -- appeared to cause cognitive
decline at a rate 1.5 times faster than those not tak-
ing the drugs. More research is needed, scientists
say, to determine just how and why this happens,
and to pinpoint which drugs are the problem.

And speaking of drugs, some of us are going to be
very happy about a decision made by Wal-Mart. The
retailer has had 30-day prescriptions for hundreds of
drugs for $4 for some time; now, most of those same
drugs will cost $10 for a 90-day prescription. Wal-
Mart will be offering Tamoxifen for $9 for a 30-day
supply, a bonus for women with breast cancer. The
only caveat to the 90-day $10 plan is that your doc-
tor must approve a 90-day prescription.

irreplaceable as mothers. And connecting emotionally
to his children is just as important for a father to do as
providing for their physical needs.
He asks: Is the presence of the father important to a
child’s well-being?
“Children growing up with a father present are more
likely to live above poverty, perform well in school, be
treated with respect and dignity, not abuse drugs and
alcohol, and be caring and nurturing of self, others and
their environment,” Chacon said.
But Chacon didn’t always tout the benefits of father-
hood. Because of his own emotionally distant and
abusive relationship with his father, Chacon said as a
young man he believed fathers were not valuable. It
wasn’t until he finished college and began working for
a program that provided services to mothers and infants
that he changed his mind.
“I saw fathers who really wanted to love, provide and
care for their children. They wanted to be involved,” he
said. “It made me realize that fatherhood is just as im-
portant as motherhood, and that sometimes fathers just
need help and encouragement.”
His career since has been focused on building up fami-
lies, particularly fathers. He believes that if a child has
a strong father, the child will “live a life of peace and
harmony and be of sound mind.”
This Father’s Day, recognize a dad who is giving his
children the gift of well-being.

• In the 1890s, the first “modern” bicycles
appeared: chain-driven vehicles with simi-
larly-sized tires. These were safer than the
high-wheel models (and were even called
“safety bicycles” as a result), but proved a step
backwards in comfort. While the long spokes of
high-wheel bikes absorbed bumps and ruts, the
smaller wheels on these new bikes, particularly
when coupled with the hard-rubber tires of the
era, made for jarring, unpleasant rides.
• More than a million bicycles were sold in the
United States by the time 1895 rolled around,
but one last improvement would propel the
bicycle into the must-own category: the pneu-
matic tire. Under the guidance of the Pope
Manufacturing Company (which made bi-
cycles), the Hartford Rubber Works produced
America’s first pneumatic tires in 1895. Pro-
viding a much softer ride, they soon became a
standard feature on all bicycle models.
• Dozens of smaller-scale improvements boosted
the speed, comfort, longevity and performance
of bicycles during the 20th century. As women
began to find them as necessary as men, two
varieties of bicycle were made. Men’s bikes
were built with an extra stabilizer bar across the
top of the bike. Women’s bikes omitted the bar,
providing for easier mounting and dismounting
of the vehicle when wearing skirts.
• The 1970s saw the development of two bi-
cycle extremes. First came bicycles that took
you nowhere. Otherwise known as exercise
bikes, these training aids first hit the home
market at the beginning of the decade. Then,
as time went on and the energy crisis sent fuel
prices skyrocketing, mopeds appeared. These
bicycle/motorcycle hybrids, most popular with
city-centered business workers, could either be
pedaled like a regular bike or powered using a
small, low-powered gasoline engine.

New Kid in Town
Annika Sorenstam, 37, hung up her crown last month
-- days after descending to the No. 2 spot on the LPGA
Tour. This after winning 72 titles and 10 majors and
earning more than $22 million over her legendary ca-
reer.
Sorenstam announced her retirement amid a cadre of
attendants, support staff and corporate sponsors in one
of the glitziest places in the world. Hundreds of sports
writers and news reporters dutifully broke the news.
The end of an era.
Meanwhile, in Leawood, Kan., Mindy Kim dreamt of
hiring a professional caddy. It’d be a big step for the 18-
year-old, Korean-born, Diamond Bar, Calif., resident. A
lifelong career in golf is her dream, and the odds would
seem to be stacked against her if the guy carrying her
bags is always a random 50-something member of the
club she’s playing at.
But a professional caddy costs about $500 per week
-- no small piece of change for a teenager who has
only earned about $4,900 in the LPGA Futures Tour.
No small step for a young woman who hasn’t heard
from her preferred coach -- the decidedly eccentric Mac
O’Grady -- in more than two years.
“He doesn’t have a phone,” Kim says.
O’Grady must have taught her something: Kim consis-
tently outdrove the competition during the Mercedes-
Benz of Kansas City Championship at Leawood South
Country Club that week.

Kim stayed at the house of Dr. Lewis and Cheryl Roht,
members of theBack club. There, in their decidedly plush

home, Kim lived for a total of three days -- but she
hardly relaxed.
By 10 a.m., Dr. Roht was driving her to the club, where
she practiced for about two hours before teeing off. She
would play a six-hour round, and then she’d practice for
another hour. After being dropped back off at the Roht’s
house, she would politely inquire about the dinner hour,
and then go for a run around the neighborhood with
their Shetland sheepdog, Robby.
That day she ended the second round 2-under and led
the tournament. That night she prayed and apologized
to members of the Roht family if she sounded a bit too
cocky. She really wanted the win.
The next morning Dr. Roht drove her to the course
again and offered what calming advice he could.
Kim finished with a 3-under 210 that day, winning
her first-ever tournament and jumping to fourth on the
money list with $18,172. If she finishes the season in the
top five, she’s in the LPGA.
Watching her run around the block again, you can’t help
but hope that it’s the start of something big.

HARRY S TRUMAN
No, the “S” in the name above isn’t an initial that’s
missing a period. Find out why as we discuss Harry
Truman in a new edition of All the Presidents’
Tidbits.
• Harry S Truman was born on May 8, 1884, in
Lamar, Missouri. His first name was indeed
Harry (not Harold or Harrison), and his middle
name was just plain S. How did that come about?
Well, Truman’s parents couldn’t decide which of
their grandfathers’ names they would use for their
newborn son’s middle name. Deadlocked between
Solomon (his maternal grandpa) and Shippe (his
father’s dad), the couple compromised by just
making it S.
• As a child, Truman was admittedly a bit of a
sissy. He wore thick glasses that prevented his
participation in contact sports, so he became an
umpire. (Of course, an umpire with thick glasses
is just asking for it.) In truth, he preferred to stay
indoors reading or playing the piano. He was a
good student, and knew the value of those smarter
than he; the valedictorian of his high school class
was Charles G. Ross, whom Truman appointed as
his press secretary while president.
• Also a member of the Independence (Mo.) High
School Class of 1901 was Elizabeth Virginia
Wallace. Bess, as she was better known, had been
friends with Harry since he was six years old.
Despite the long relationship, the couple waited
until 1917 to officially announce their engagement.
They wed two years later.
• Harry’s college plans were dashed when his
father went broke speculating on wheat futures,
so he went to work instead. (Truman was the only
20th-century president not to attend college.) He
worked as a clerk and also helped his parents run
the family farm until World War I. Truman served
two years overseas in the Army, returning home in
1919. After a venture into haberdashery nearly led
to bankruptcy, Harry got into politics.
• Law school came first. Harry then put his
organizational skills to work for Jackson County,
helping it to survive (and even thrive) through the
Great Depression. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed
by “New Deal” proponent FDR and other members
the Democratic Party, and Truman rode the wave
of success to the U.S. Senate in 1935. He served
ten years in that capacity until a new opportunity
arose: Roosevelt wanted him to replace Henry
Wallace as his vice presidential candidate for the
1944 election. FDR won a fourth term, but it didn’t
last long.
• On April 12, 1945, Roosevelt passed away, making
Harry Truman the 33rd president. He suddenly
found himself in charge of the most powerful
nation on Earth, in the middle of a war that had
lingered far too long. Four months later, Truman
ended World War II with two atomic strikes on
Japanese targets.
• The remainder of Truman’s time in office proved
no easier. His administration had to deal with
the Red Scare, the Cold War, the formation of
Israel, and a new military action in Korea. He was
expected to lose reelection in 1948, but pulled
off a last-minute upset. He also survived a 1950
assassination attempt. During this turbulent and
exciting time in history, Truman had four loves:
his wife Bess, his daughter Margaret, his country,
and playing poker.

Modern Wire
Silhouette for Dad
Skip the tie and cologne for Dad’s gift this Father’s Day,
June 15. Instead, get outside on a sunny day, grab about
3 1/2 feet of colorful, plastic-coated, 12-gauge electrical
wire from the toolbox and create a wire sculpture of your
child’s profile.
Discover how easy it is to make this unique display for
Dad’s bookshelf or desk.
Here’s how to get started:
Go outside with your child when the sun is shining, and
take a look at his shadow. Turn his head sideways, place
a piece of paper on a flat wall and trace the shadow of the
profile of his face and head.
Take the electrical wire and bend it to form the shape of
the shadow of his chin, mouth, nose, forehead and around
the top and back of the head. Use needle-nose pliers to
help bend the wire. Note: When you make a lip, you have
to exaggerate the mouth a little more than the actual sil-
houette reveals. Poke the two ends of wire, which form
his neck, into a small, 6-inch, flat
round or square board with holes
drilled small enough so that the
wires fit snugly. The wires will
be inserted about 2 1/2 inches
apart. Add some glue where the
wire is inserted to keep the wire
firmly in place in the base.
For hair, add thinner colored
wire and twist it onto the head. For curly hair, wrap the
wire around a pencil. Remove the pencil and then attach
the “curls” to the head. If you create a ponytail with thin
wire, use a hair clip to cinch it together.
You’ll definitely see your child from a different point of
view when the modern art silhouette is complete.
Once you get started, don’t stop with the kids in the family.
Make one of Dad, yourself and even your pet dog or cat for
an “all in the family” display.
Note: If the sun isn’t shining, simply shape the wire di-
rectly around your child’s profile. Ask him to open his lips
slightly to make the best shape.
The baseboards are available at crafts stores, or you could
use a smooth wooden block. The wire is available at most
hardware stores.

Cat on a Leash

The other day I watched a neighbor walking her cat
on a leash. I was unaware that cats could even stand a
leash, much less that they need to have one to go outside.
What’s the deal with cat leashes? -- Bill R., Cleveland
DEAR BILL:
Cat leashes aren’t as new or unusual as you think --
they’ve been available at local pet stores for more than a
decade now, and the idea of taking one’s cat outside on a
leash is continuing to catch on, for a simple reason: Own-
ers want to keep their cats safe.
The leash is one sign in a trend of heightened awareness
among cat owners, that letting their cats run around the
neighborhood unfettered is detrimental to almost ev-
eryone involved -- the neighbors, the owner and the cat
itself, which is at risk from cars, wildlife and manmade or
natural poisons. Local laws around the country also are

increasing penalties for cats that run loose.
Increasingly, cat owners are deciding to make their cat
an indoor cat, where the pet stays inside. But not all cats
are happy being inside all the time; and many owners
still want their pets to experience the outdoors.
Cat leashes differ from dog leashes -- they’re much
lighter, as is the harness used to attach the leash.
(Leashes should never be attached to the cat’s collar.)
The leash should be no longer than 6 feet, as cats do
not follow verbal commands the way that dogs do, and
tend to leap under bushes or toward the street, neces-
