Diagram:

This engine was a 4 stroke engine, single cylinder engine. It begun with air being pulled into the cylinder
at the beginning. Then the piston then proceeded to the bottom of the piston to complete the first
stroke. Then the piston was pushed up by the mechanism, and compressed the air within the cylinder to
begin the second stroke. At this point, fuel was injected into the cylinder by the injector, and then the
high pressure lead to high temperature, and ignition of the engine to reach the third stroke at the
bottom after ignition. The final stroke is when the piston returns to the beginning part, with air and fuel
being exhausted through the exhaust gas calorimeter.
Technical Specifications:
Cylinder bore: 5.625 in
Cylinder stroke: 10.5in

Compression Pressure: 500psi

Nominal power: 9.25HP at 400RPM

Injection Pressure: 1600psi

Compression Ratio: 16: 1

Firing Pressure: 680psi

Procedure:
1. All of the following pre-start checks were considered
a. Ventilation
b. Indicator
c. Cooling System
d. Air vent valve, and condensation valve were closed.
e. Valve to fuel tank was opened
f. Valve to measuring cylinder was closed
g. Oil reservoir was filled to full.
2. The exhaust lifter was held down.
3. The engine pulley was quickly cranked to begin starting the engine.
4. The exhaust lifter was released.
5. The engine was started, and began to heat up for approximately 5-10 minutes up to 400-420
RPM.
6. The oil drip feed was checked to maintain 15-23 drops per minute
7. Weights were placed on each side of the engine, which allowed a constant engine speed at
around 400RPM.
8. All the following measurements on the scales attached to the engine were taken.
a. Brake Load
b. Engine Speed
c. Water Inlet Temperature
d. Engine Water Flow
e. Calorimeter Water Outlet Temperature
f. Calorimeter Water Flow
g. Exhaust Temperature (Engine Out, Calorimeter In, Calorimeter Out)
h. Air Flow
9. An Indicator Diagram was made by attaching a sheet to the graph tracer that was attached to
the engine.
10. The Indicator diagram was removed.
11. Engine was unloaded. The weights were removed in pairs.
12. The pump handle and exhaust lifter were held down until the engine stopped.
13. Cooling water valves were shut off. The condensation cock and air vent cock on the calorimeter
were also shut off.
14. The exhaust fan and room fan was also turned off.
15. The securing pin was removed from the pump handle.
16. The Area under the graph was measured by fixing it to cardboard and a specialized tool to
measure the indicator diagram area.
17. The Indicator diagram length was measured
18. The total Fuel Used was measured
19. The fuel test period was measured.
