copperexteriorfacade,andtheuniquelyshaped
courtyards,andtheobservationdeckinthetower
allprovideanexperiencethatisdifferentthan
most.Thesystemisbasedofffittingintothe
surroundingoftheGoldenGateParkandtostill
inheritsomeofthepastfromthepreviousde
Youngmuseumsthathavebeentakendownand
rebuilt.Thelandscapearoundthebuilding,likethe
gardensandterraces,helptoprovidethefull
experienceofthearchitectureaswell.

Howdidthesiteofthebuildingaffectits
form?
ThesiteofthisbuildingisintheGoldenGate
Park.Thegeneralareawaschosenbecausethe
museumhadbeenpreviouslybuiltthereandthe
currentmuseumisarebuild.Thesiteisrather
rectangular,whichiswhythebuildingis
essentiallyarectangle.Withtheexceptionofthe
cutoutsandthetower,thebuildingsformfrom
theoutsideissimple.Thesitedoesaffectthe
reasoningforbuildingthetowerthewayitis.The
viewfromthetowerallowsthegueststoseeall
ofSanFranciscofromtheobservationdeck.
Thiswasbecausethesiteisinauniqueplace
whichallowsagreatviewoftheparkandthe
city.

Theformofthebuildingaffectsstructural
systembecauseitisveryrectangularandallows
forbasicdesigntoallowthebuildingtobe
structurallysound.Although,thebuildingis
uniquebecauseitisinCalifornia,and
earthquakesarelikely,sothebuildinghasa
specificstructuralsystem.Theinfrastructural
systemallowsthebaseofthebuildingtohave3
feetofhorizontaldisplacementduringan
earthquake.

Theformandlocationofthebuildingaffectits
HVACsystembecauseitisinCalifornia,where
theweatheriswarmandairpollutionishigh.The
