Notes
China: Most coal mining in China uses the underground longwall mining technique. It was reported in 2009 that China intended to establish eight to ten
large mines with an output of "around 50 Mt" each in the states of Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Ningxia.[26] In 2011, Peabody Energy and the
province of Xinjiang signed an agreement to develop a 50 mtpa surface mine in Xinjiang.[27]
Australia: In Wikipedia's list of coal mines in Australia, the largest mine listed is Morwell, with 20 million tons (18.14 million tonnes) per year.[28]
Russia: The largest mine in the country is the newly opened Arshanovsky pit in the Khakassia Republic, which is expected to have a capacity of 10
million tonnes per year.[29]
South Africa: Grootegeluk Coal Mine produces 18.8 Mtpa.[30] Matla Coal Mine produces 14 Mtpa.[31]
