To enhance the students practical and cognitive knowledge in fitness and nutrition concepts
To better understand, critically evaluate and appreciate the psycho-physiological benefits of
increased fitness
To establish a sound, individual and enjoyable physical activity program that may be
maintained throughout life
To promote autonomy and consistency in exercise practices, and to introduce students to a
variety of available health and fitness resources.
Course Description & Activity:
The main activity components of this class will be a blend of cardiovascular exercise and muscular
strength and endurance exercises. Based on current fitness level, students will commit to a prescribed
program of exercise. The prescription will be reviewed during the semester and adjusted appropriately.
The facilities utilized include the indoor & outdoor tracks, cardiovascular exercise machines, cybex
machines and free weights. Group fitness activities include circuits of body weight exercises and
exercises with stability balls, medicine balls, dumbbells, resistance bands, etc. Workouts will cover the
practical application of the five health-related components of fitness, including nutrition and the

Attendance, Class Meeting Times and Clothing:
Attendance will be required during drop/add for all enrolled students. For the entire semester you will
be allowed two free absences without penalty. For each absence over three, 10% per absence will
be deducted from my evaluation of the practical aspect of your performance (see Grading). If you
accumulate more than (4) absences, you will receive no credit for this course, and a U, F, WF, or W will
be awarded as circumstances dictate. There are NO excused absences. Unexcused absences
include trips, appointments, interviews, conferences, illness, injury, official school business, jury duty,
as well as simply not showing up. You will be permitted one (1) official make-up day during the
semester to make up any absences for reasons listed above. A variety of out of class make-up
opportunities will be announced and posted on your Blackboard site but only make-ups posted by me
will be allowed for credit. If you are unsure, confirm it with me. Make-ups must be approved by me
via e-mail. You are responsible for managing your absences. If you are more than 10 minutes late or
leave more than 10 minutes early, you will be marked Tardy for the day. Two Tardies = One Absence.

Classes will begin promptly at 5 minutes after the scheduled starting time (2;35) and will be dismissed
10 minutes prior to its scheduled conclusion (3:35pm). If you are more than 10 minutes late twice, this
will count as an absence. You are responsible for monitoring the Blackboard course site for changes in
class location, announcements, quiz and homework deadlines, due dates, etc. Students are
responsible for finding out about location changes if they are absent from class. I couldnt find the
class is NOT an excused absence.
Recommended clothing is anything that is appropriate, comfortable and easy to move in. Be prepared
for outside activities!!
Grading:

55% of your final grade will be determined by your participation in and commitment to your
training program. This is the practical (activity) component of your overall grade and includes
attendance and my subjective evaluation of your work ethic and focus.

30% of your final grade will come from your score on each of the 2 quizzes (15% each).
15% of your final grade will be calculated from the successful & timely completion of
labs/homework
