DETAILED LIST OF REFERENCES

PREFACE:
The most common references were desired to be found first so the most common search engine,
Google, was used in order to find references related to the topic. Nothing turned up so more specific
sources were used.
Through the use of the suggested databases I found publications related to events that treated the topic
and thus discovered a few other subjects of discussion which helped linking to the main theme, like
urban regeneration projects, urban renewal projects, etc. Using the topic and sometimes these subjects
as key words, I continued using these databases but also some related ones that I discovered during the
process (like Getty Research Institute Research Library Catalog) .
Some of the sources used did not give any description of the articles, or books so relating the searches in
order to gather more information was necessary.
After a first session I analyzed the results and found that there were too many case studies and not
enough theoretical works that could explain the subject of the topic. In this sense I focused more on
books and articles which gave a more in-depth understanding of the matter.
Aside from the direct and indirect key word search I also searched for subjects I previously encountered
and knew they were related (like the projects of Manuel de Sola Morales, or Eduardo Souto de Moura).
For the formatting of the book references I used the ones in the examples that were given to us and for
the articles I used MLA 7 format.

From the abstract: "In this paper, [the author focuses] attention on the arguments and
representations underlying this colossal project and will examine it in the light of relatively
recent changes that have been affecting the urban tissue of the cities of the Maghreb in the
2000s, in line with an increasingly globalized perception of urban planning often reflected in
ambitious large-scale projects."

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
Examines the use of strategic planning and projects in 15 cities in developing and developed
countries, drawing on the experiences of a global network of researchers (the IBIS network)
investigating the relationship between globalization and urbanization processes. It uses a
common methodology to draw out similarities and differences of these policies and projects and
the nature of the globalization processes they are responding to.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
Planning Through Projects shows how the shift from master planning to strategic planning
through large urban projects is a worldwide process affecting all countries, and it highlights the
impact that such large projects have on urban governance. The book presents thirty megacities
from all over the world, considering their socioeconomic and environmental context, and the
plans and strategies implemented. The global scope, the combination of theory and practice,
and the many examples, plans, and illustrations make this book an excellent reference for
teachers, students, and professionals working in urban planning and management. The book
includes 30 comprehensive case studies from major cities all over the world: Beijing, Bilbao,
Bogot, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Crdoba, Daego, Fukoaka, Glasgow, Hsinshu, La Plata, Liverpool,
Lusaka, Mexico City, Montevideo, Ningbo, Panama, Paris, Pretoria, Taipei, The Hague, Tokyo, Rio
de Janeiro, Rotterdam, Santiago, San Salvador, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Shanghai, and Valparaiso.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: "This paper deals with the spread of prestige urban projects in Nouakchott
and Khartoum, the capitals of Mauritania and Sudan respectively. [The authors] hypothesize
that for these cities, located on the margins of the Arab world, prestige projects inspired by the
Gulf model epitomize a new way of development based on hypermodernity... the towers of
Dubai represent a specific cultural model for two states where affiliation to the Arab world is a
contested political issue."

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
In the wake of recent failures in America's urban infrastructure, an emerging group of activist
designers are calling on architects to rethink their relationship to the city. For them, the future
of the American city lies not in modernism's large-scale master plans or new urbanism's
nostalgic community planning. Instead, they favor working with the realities of urban space,
finding hidden opportunities in what already exists in our cities; they eschew monolithic, topdown approaches. Fast-Forward Urbanism presents a mixture of essays, opinions, and design
projects by well-known architects and theorists including Stan Allen, Will Alsop, Lars Lerup, and
Keller Easterling. Equal partstheory and practice, their ideas lay the groundwork for the next
American metropolis. Fast-Forward Urbanism will be a useful tool for designers as well as
anyone working in the federal recovery effort, from policy-makers to engineers to builders to
planners.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: Large urban development projects are at the forefront of scholarly
attention. This article aims at complementing critical analyses of urban projects from a politicaleconomic perspective with an analysis centred on planning agency and practice. The focus is on
the role of innovative planning concepts in the governance process. The question raised is: how
can discourse on the urban quality of places affect collective choices in a reflective way, possibly
leading to integrating private interests within ambitious public strategies? The question is
addressed by analysing planning of large urban projects as a "framing" practice, intended in a
dual sense: as a practice defining arenas and forms of interaction, and as a practice conveying
ideas, visions, concepts of "urbanity". The case study presented - the Zuidas in Amsterdam - is
interpreted as the scene of conflicting frames about the "public" meaning of places and as the
contradictory struggle for framing collective action by means of innovative planning
concepts. The analysis highlights the limits of framing approaches that do not adequately
address the multiplicity of arenas and interactions involved in the governance of urban
transformations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the abstract: For the next three years the City of Guadalajara has an important challenge
to meet: to rise to the occasion of its being chosen as the venue for the Pan-American Games,
enthusiastically committing and showcasing appropriate resources an event of this magnitude
demands, while also carrying out a series Of Urgent urban projects resulting in an improved City
for its residents. Transitioning from discussing and Promoting through the media to the
realization of a Concrete project is a matter of credibility The relationship established
between Guadalajara and other cities which have had similar experiences in achieving these
objectives, along with the sharing of these experiences and the effort and capabilities needed
may contribute to the adequate use of time and space.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
Contemporary urban development is increasingly characterized by a reliance on diagrams to
convey the rational, statistical point of view of the professional urban planner. In his new book
Urbanisms, architect Steven Holl suggests that just as modern medicine has recognized the
power of the irrational psyche, urban planners need to realize that the experiential power of
cities cannot be completely rationalized and must be studied subjectively. With a selection of
urban and architectural projects from his thirty year practice, Holl stretches urban planning into
the domain of uncertainty. Analyzing a wide range of matters from everyday experiences to
spatial data, Urbanisms examines how perception and the senses are intertwined with the
material, space, and light of urban form. Grouped under themes like Fragments, Porosity,
Insertions, Precious, and Fusion, Holl explores concepts such as creating cities from pieces or
edges; moving in and out of the spaces between a built environment; inserting architectural
elements into complex urban situations; constructing small-scale mini-urbanisms; and
preserving natural landscapes. Urbanisms presents design solutions for diverse locations
including the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa in Iowa City; Green Urban
Laboratory in Nanning, China; Toolenburg Zuid Schipol, The Netherlands; Fondation Pinault Ile
Seguin in Paris, France; and the Master Plan for M.I.T.'s Vassar Street in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. A comprehensive exploration of each project illustrates this much-celebrated
and influential architect's perspective on large-scale planning.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the text: In many parts of the underdeveloped world theatre is being used as a medium
of education, problem-solving, dialogue and mobilization on development issues such as
literacy, health, sanitation, agriculture self-help projects and co-operatives.[1] The following is
an account of a theatre project in an urban area in Zimbabwe. Up to now most theatre for
development work has been conducted in rural areas. The Matapi Hostels experience reveals
the problems of such work in urban conditions and prompts certain doubts concerning the longterm validity of theatre for development itself.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: The city of Singapore has a very short history of 185 years. However,
since 1972, Singapore has been confronting significant transformations owing to different
agendas and priorities of the city government. The present morphology of the city can be best
described as the accumulation of different layers, carefully controlled and manipulated
by the State through planning and design. Hence, the public spaces within the city are
formed as a result of the interactions among these layers. The inclusion ofeach layer not only
shapes the physical form of the public space, but also adds a newer set of meaning by adding
new functional role within the existing fabric. This article
is aresult of the preliminary investigation of a research project that observes the urban transfor
mation of Singapore from 1972 to 2005 within the framework of this layeredmorphology. It will
delve deeper to discern and identify the layers that act as the main determinant for shaping the
urban public spaces in Singapore.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: Large-scale development projects that try to attract and spatially
accommodate flows of international investment money are prominent features of the planning
agenda of many internationally oriented metropolitan areas in the western world. In this study
the focus is on the innovative aspiration evident in some of the latest generation of projects, to
create a mixed-use economic and urban area. This ambition for new urbanity is often
expressed in a preliminary stage of planning but hardly ever materialises in the spaces which are
eventually built. How can this discrepancy be understood and what opportunities are there for
the creation of more lively mixed-use projects in the future?
Extensive qualitative case study research on Zuidas Amsterdam, restad Copenhagen and
Forum Barcelona has unravelled complex processes of symbolic-cognitive and organisational
framing in these projects. This book examines how the ambition to become a new integrated
urban place has been conceived and developed and questions to what extent new urbanity has
developed into a validated social norm, capable of influencing major actors paths of action. It
concludes that the problematic implementation of new urbanity can mainly be attributed to the
fact that it is still a disconnected innovation, an ambition which has no connection with the
organisational framing of projects and the functioning of their operational domains.

Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt) of the University of Amsterdam.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
Discussions on the global economy focus on the hyper-mobility of capital, the possibility of
instantaneous transmission of information and money around the globe, the centrality of
information outputs to our economic systems and emphasise the neutralisation of geography
and of places. What is ignored, however, is that even the most advanced information industries
need a material infrastructure of buildings and work processes, and considerable agglomeration,
in order to operate in global markets. Further, the globalisation of economic activity has brought
with it not only a vast dispersal of offices and factories, but also a growing importance of central
functions to manage and coordinate such worldwide networks of activities.
The development of global urban projects is one manifestation of this move towards centrality
in urban situations. These large-scale urban projects are the result of governments' seeking
competitive advantage in the global economy. They are critical components of a nation's global
infrastructure. In the booming economies of the Asia Pacific Rim prior to the Asian Economic
Crisis these urban developments were seen as key components of national economic policies. In
their making they require a conscious effort to arrange material infrastructure and reinforce
that there is a role for urban design in this making. Emerging Urbanity is an exploration of this
role in nine global urban projects in the Asia Pacific Rim.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
The International Exposition, Expo Zaragoza 2008, is one of the greatest international events of
the year, featuring large scale urban projects. With water as the central theme, the building
designs of acclaimed architects Enrique de Teresa, Nieto y Sobejano, Francisco Mangado, Olano
y Mendo Arquitectos, lvaro Planchuelo, Torres y Martinez Lapea, ACXT and Zaha Hadid
hosted the different events and pavillions. This volume analyzes the making of the architectonic
complex and its landscape, critically examining the meaning and importance of Expo Zaragoza
2008 as a 21st century model for an urban development strategy. The architectonic pieces
reflect the cultural and social dynamics transforming architecture today in Spain.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: "Differences in stakeholders' perceptions, lack of commitment, unused
knowledge, and interfering, ineffective, measures are just some of the problems encountered in
sustainable urban development projects. Collaborative decisionmaking approaches tackle these
problems by creating a shared understanding of the problems faced and of ways to address
them. The authors explore how the combined application of two techniques, a decision-support

From the abstract: "This paper shows how Rabati civil society has decided not to accept being
left behind or faced with a 'fait accompli' in the development of urban mega-projects. The

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto of Moura, widely celebrated for his
works of subtlety and refinement, his deft handling of traditional and natural materials, and a
precise attention to detail, hast produced structures that, while firmly anchored in the building
traditions of his native Portugal, also make insightful reference to Mies and classic early
modernism. His buildings establish an intimate connection to nature, landscape, and context.
His more recent work has avoided the endless reception of earlier typologies in order to explore
the adaption of his approach to buildings of a larger scale.
Reading the book we find that the way he does that relates to the practices used when
developing urban projects.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: Ken Smith is unquestionably one of the most interesting voices in landscape
architecture; his works reflect the intensity and energy of their surroundings and challenge the
distinction between landscape and art form. Ken Smith Landscape Architects/Urban
Projects focuses on three prominent works in New York City: his East River Project; his work for
P.S. 19; and his MoMA rooftop garden. Through Smith's colorful, playful drawings and
photographs, the book reveals how each project explores new expressions of landscape design
in the city.
Ken Smith Landscape Architects/Urban Projects is part of the Source Books in Landscape
Architecture series sponsored by Ohio State University. These books present sketches, drawings,
models, renderings, working drawings, and photographs. Each book focuses on a recent,
important work or works at a level of detail that allows thorough study of the project from its
conception to the completion of design and construction.
From the abstract we understand that the book shows the entire process of making an urban
project.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: Urban projects in Zagreb raise a delicate issue primarily due to an imprecise
definition of the term "urban project" as well as to a relatationship beteen politics and
profession. This publication is a significant scientific contribution to the first stages of research
of this complex topic in Croatia. The authors have provided a critical analysis ofZagreb's political
and architectural circumastances and scientifically elaborated the need to
redefine urban project with an emphasis on precise definition of criteria for projectselection.
The authors showed seven positively assessed models of west european cities in order to
illustrate their arguments. The authors created for this scientific monograph graphic
representations of the main topics and problems which make possible for the readers to explore
the data individually and come to their own conclusions.

Presenting the findings of extensive research into the development of planning tools and
strategies since the early 1970s, this book addresses key issues in urban
development/governance and brings together a range of different national experiences.
Helpfully divided into three sections, Framing Strategic Urban Projects sets out the study
framework, with its social, policy and institutional contexts; uses up-to-date European case
studies to highlight different planning issues, including new-urbanism, information networks and
public partnerships; and finally makes good-practice recommendations.
Offering a systematic comparison of a wide variety of projects and providing useful case study
material of these large-scale urban projects and recommendations, this book is essential reading
for planners, policy makers and students interested in how to make strategic urban projects
work effectively.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: The Spanish architect and urban planner Manuel de Sola-Morales has made
successful interventions in urban landscapes from Antwerp to Trieste, Groningen to Porto, and
from Barcelona to The Hague. For him a city does not consist of abstractions, but of concrete,
tangible buildings and public spaces. By intervening--precisely and with great care--in this
physical reality, with projects at the interface of architecture and urban planning, Sola-Morales
effects changes in the city that transcend his work's physical or spatial dimensions. This
monograph unites his oeuvre for the first time, documenting it extensively in word and image,
with particular attention to larger and more important projects and realizations of his recent
years. Alongside texts by Manuel de Sola-Morales himself, it includes a comprehensive essay by
Columbia University's Kenneth Frampton.

TOPICAL RELEVANCE
From the abstract: With the publication of The Urban Project, containing the results of the
preceding conference, the editors hope to reach a wide audience by sharing the fruitful output
of ideas, thoughts and discussions presented there. The experiences summarized in this book
are particularly significant to everybody involved in design, building, thinking and managing the
urban scene. The conference focused mainly on the field of tension between science,
technology and art. The scope can be grouped into three major themes: research by design:
design studies that investigate the spatial potential for transformation and renewal of specific
urban sites by means of concrete projects; understanding urban and metropolitan form:
analytical studies that investigate aspects of form and matter of urban and metropolitan areas
together with the dynamics of its transformation; and research, design and education:
experiments and experiences with research driven education in the fields of architectural an
urban design, relating urban analysis and architectural design.
