Questions 1 to 8 are based on the given stimuli. Study the information carefully and choose
the best answer.

It might surprise parents to learn that it is not a waste of

time for teens to hang out online. There are myths about
kids spending time online that it is dangerous, frivolous
or making them lazy. But we found that spending time
online is essential for young people to pick up social and
technical skills they need to be competent citizens in the
digital age.
Mizuko Ito,
Researcher, University of California, Irvine

The word it in the extract above refers to

A

picking up social skills

learning technical skills

being competent citizens

spending time on the Internet

This tree with the strange-looking roots, known as

mangrove tree, is usually found in swampy areas. Unlike
most trees that have roots deep in the ground, mangrove
roots grow above the water, enabling them to breathe. The
intricate root system of mangrove trees also makes it
attractive to fish seeking food and shelter.

Without the strange-looking roots, these swamp trees would

have an intricate root system

not be able to survive

Web of Knowledge
One morning, I walked down the path to my car and right into a huge spider
web. I felt foolish for not having seen it, rid myself of the web tendrils and went on
my way. The next morning, the very same scenario occurred and I felt even more
foolish. On the third day, I was careful to look for the web. The spider had rewoven it,
but this time off the path in the bushes. How humbling it was to realise that the
spider and I had learned the exact same lesson in the same amount of time.
Adapted from Readers Digest 2015

The excerpt above tells us that the spider

A

found a new place to make its home

was smart to save itself in three days

rewove the web every time it broke

finally built its web in the path

The writer felt silly because she

A

stepped on the spider web

got rid of the web tendrils

moved the spider off the path

walked into the spider web twice

Section C
[25 marks]
[Time suggested : 50 minutes]
Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.
1

Many governments and humanitarian organizations are duly concerned about

rising food prices that are threatening the world today. Africa and Bangladesh are two
Third-World countries most likely to suffer. Reliable sources say that one in six people
in the world do not have enough food to eat and the situation is likely to get worse.
According to the World Food Programme, the crisis is a "silent tsunami" that is
threatening to plunge more than 100 million people on every continent into hunger.
This food crisis which first hit the world in late 2006 is threatening to continue, with
nearly every region in the world experiencing severe inflation. In November 2007, dairy
products cost as much as 200 per cent more in some countries compared to the previous
year while the price of wheat had increased by 50 per cent, rice by 16 per cent and
poultry nearly 10 per cent.
Experts believe that there are several factors responsible for rising food prices. The
increased demand for food from developing countries such as India and China is one
such factor. The rapid economic growth of these two nations has resulted in a growing
middle-class population. With greater wealth distribution, the eating habits of the people
in these two countries have changed, resulting in an increased demand for agricultural
and meat products. The increase in prices of corn and soybeans has been blamed on the
increasing demand for meat among the middle class in Latin America and Asia. Corn
and maize, two staple foods of many people in the world, are now used to feed cattle,
pigs and poultry to meet the demand for meat.
Land that was at one time used to grow food crops such as rice and wheat is now being
utilized to grow crops which yield biofuel. While this may seem to be a good move to
overcome our dependence on petrol and diesel, it is escalating food prices all over the
world and making life increasingly difficult in developing countries. The problem is
worsened because the production of biofuels is being strongly supported by
industrialized countries.

10

15

20

25

Scientists believe that recurring natural disasters are also responsible for increasing food
prices. Extreme weather patterns such as floods, heat waves and droughts, results of
global warming, are responsible for reduced food harvests and stockpiles.

Increasing oil prices are also responsible for escalating food prices and food shortages.
The skyrocketing price of oil, one of the highest the world has ever experienced, has
impacted heavily on many aspects of peoples lives. Farmers, for instance, have to
allocate more expenditure for transportation, fuel and fertilizers and all these additional
costs increase the price of food.

30

In an effort to protect their own citizens, some food producing countries, such as Russia
and India, have placed restrictions on food exports. While helping their own nations,
this measure has escalated food prices in other countries.

35

SULIT

SULIT

10

1119/2

A direct consequence of rising food prices is widespread hunger which in turn leads to
social unrest. In 2008, food riots occurred in countries like India and Mexico. It has
been reported that in Argentina, the price of tomatoes exceeded that of meat, resulting in
its people boycotting the nation's presidential elections. In Italy, where pasta is a staple
diet, shoppers organized a one-day boycott of this commodity.

40

Most hard hit by the food crisis are non-profit and volunteer organizations which
provide humanitarian aid to millions of people all over the world. These organizations,
especially those involved in fighting hunger, have been forced to cut down on the
amount of food aid given to those in need. For instance, Mercy Corps has had to reduce
food aid given to hundreds of Iraqi refugee families in Syria.

45

10

The increasing price of food, especially grains, also affects the price of meat. This is
because the feed prices for livestock are also increasing.

11

Despite the bleak outlook, the experts are optimistic about solutions to this problem.
African scientists, with funding from the Bill Gates Foundation, are working to develop
super strains of traditional African staple foods such as yams, green bananas, sorghum
and cassava. Some quarters have also called on farmers to grow food for human
consumption, and not for biofuel as they feel the latter is an inhumane crime against
humanity. As one critic says, 'food should be used to feed people, not machines.'

Night and morning with my tears;

And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright;
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,
And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole:
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
