Lemma 20 Let G be a group with jGj = pr for some prime p. If G acts on a set S and X
is the set of all G–stable elements in S then jXj ´ jSj mod p.
Proof. Let s1; : : : ; sm be representatives of the disjoint orbits under G containing more
than one element. Then S is the disjoint union S = X [ O(s1) [ ¢ ¢ ¢ [ O(sm), and so
jSj = jXj +
P
i jO(si)j. By Lemma 13, jO(si)j = [G : Gsi ], which by Lagrange’s theorem is
a divisor of jGj. Therefore, since O(si) contains more than one element, jO(si)j is divisible
by p. Therefore jSj ´ jXj mod p.
Theorem 21 (Second Sylow Theorem) Let G be a group of order pnq, where p is a
prime and p does not divide q. If P is a p–Sylow subgroup of G and H is any subgroup of
G of order a power of p then H µ xPx¡1 for some x 2 G. In particular, any two p–Sylow
subgroups of G are conjugate
Proof. Let S be the set of left cosets of P in G and let H act on S as in Example 7.
Let X be the set of all H–stable elements of S. By Lemma 20, jSj ´ jXj mod p. Since
jSj = jGj = jPj = q is not divisible by p, jXj 6´ 0 mod p, so X is not the empty set. Suppose
aP 2 X. The orbit of aP is the set fhaP j h 2 Hg. Since this orbit has only one element,
haP = aP for each h 2 H. So ha 2 aP, or h 2 aPa¡1 for each h. Therefore H µ aPa¡1.
This proves the first statement of the theorem. For the second statement, suppose P0 is
another p–Sylow subgroup of G. Then by the first part of the theorem, P0 µ aPa¡1 for
some
a 2 G. But jP0j = pn = jPj = jaPa¡1j. Therefore P0 = aPa¡1.
A consequence of the second Sylow theorem, which we will use in the proof of the third
Sylow theorem, is that a p–Sylow subgroup P of G is a normal subgroup of G iff P is the
unique p–Sylow subgroup of G. For, P is normal in G iff xPx¡1 = P for each x 2 G.
Therefore P is normal in G iff P is the unique p–Sylow subgroup of G, by the second
Sylow
theorem. We will prove the third Sylow theorem by using some of the ideas in the proof of
the second Sylow theorem.
Theorem 22 (Third Sylow Theorem) The number of p–Sylow subgroups of G divides
jGj and is of the form 1 + kp for some nonnegative integer k.
Proof. Let P be a p–Sylow subgroup of G. Then by the second Sylow theorem, the
set S of all p–Sylow subgroups of G is S = fgPg¡1 j g 2 Gg. The group G acts on S by
conjugation. That is, G acts on S via (g;Q) 7! gQg¡1 for Q = aPa¡1 2 S, as in Example 8.
The orbit of P is S, and the stabilizer of P is fg 2 G j gPg¡1 = Pg = N(P), the normalizer
of P. Therefore by Lemma 13, jSj = [G : (N(P)] = jGj = jN(P)j. Therefore the number of
p–Sylow subgroups of G divides jGj, and this number is not divisible
