1. (a) International relations is the study of relationships between states. What is a state? (5
marks)
(b) As a student of International Relations, you ought to appreciate the fact that the World system
changes always. It is therefore important to know where we have come from in order to
understand where we are and where we are going.
Describe the political and economic history of the World (20 marks)
2(a) Define the term International relations? (5 marks)
(b) International Relations is often considered a branch of political science, but an important
sector of academia prefer to treat it as an interdisciplinary field of study as it draws upon such
diverse fields as technology, economics, history, international law, social work, gender studies.
Briefly discuss the relevance of International Relations in regard to any three of the following
fields. (20 marks)
i) Human rights
ii) Gender Studies
iii) International law
iv) Security
v) Economic Development

3. Realism and Liberalism are major theories of International Relations which attempt to provide
a conceptual framework upon which International Relations can be analyzed. For each;
a). Explain the key underlying assumptions (10 marks)
b) What are the criticisms of the theory? (15 marks)
4. Study of conflict and cooperation this statement best summarizes the definition of
International Relations
a) Using examples identify and explain areas in which countries may be said to engage in
cooperation? (10 marks)
b) State and explain the causes of conflict within and between countries in Africa.

5. African states are engaged in a struggle for economic survival and economic independence in
order to increase their chances of preserving their sovereignty and political independence from
internal and external threats. Briefly discuss the following aspects of African international
relations (25 marks)
a) African poverty and underdevelopment
b) The African dependency theory
6 (a) State the different levels of analysis of international relations (1 mark)
(b) For each level of analysis, examine how foreign policy decisions are made (24 marks)
7. As key players in International Relations, International organizations have been instrumental
in handling security, economic and social issues of the World.
(a) For each (security, economic and social), identify at least 3 key issues explaining the role
played by international organizations to resolve the aforementioned issues (18 marks)
(b) Giving examples, mention the different types of international organizations (7 marks)
