Date and Time Observed:

At the end of this activity, you should be able to give some principles
involved in designing a curriculum.

Your Map:
1. Visit a school and choose a class to be observed. Then arrange with
the teacher that you are going to conduct a class observation
2. Take note of the different learning environment provide in the lesson
plan for specific subject area. Generate information on the
following: objectives, strategies, and assessment tools used.
3. Find out whether or not strategies are aligned with the objectives
and assessment of learning. Make a matrix of information from the
observations made.
4. Reflect on your FS experience and share thoughts, insights, and
feelings in class.

Teacher Objectives:

At the end of the class session, the students will be able to identify the
types of friction and its uses and benefits.

Describe the Strategies:

Describe the assessment tools used:

Since the teacher had conducted a short examination for the whole period
of time, she uses a test paper in which it has 80 item test.

NONE

The
teacher
uses a test
paper since
for the
whole class
period, she
had only
conducted
a short
examinatio
n.

The observation
is good since in
my own
perspective they
are already in the
evaluation part in
which they are
assessed on what
they had learned
from the lesson.

Your Analysis
Why do teachers need to align the objectives, strategies, and
assessment?
A teacher needs to have an objective, strategies and assessment to make
valid, just and reliable to learning conditions:
Objectives is the learning target;
Strategies & Techniques is how the subject will be deliver to the learner and;
Assessment is a systematic process of getting information about students
performance.
Without it there will be no learning and it will end up in worthless.
How should teachers align their objectives, strategies, and
assessment? Suggest some strategies.
It is better to consider some aspects like the environment, level of behaviour,
intellectual achievements of learner and the resources availability, my style
of preparing those systems are simple, we should vision or infer what will be
the outcome and brainstorm will be a great help and write down in a neat
paper and thats it ready to rear.

Reflections
What has been your most meaningful experience in this
episode? What makes it meaningful to you? How could such an
experience help you become a better teacher?
One of the most meaningful experiences during this episode experienced by
the observer was when he observed a class review of the students for an
incoming evaluation. That experience opened the eye of the observer to the
hardships a teacher undergoes just to teach. The observer realized that to be
an effective teacher, he should at all times be patient, understanding and
flexible with his schedule whenever the situation demands it so.

Activity 2f. Checkpoints

(Professional Education Subject: Curriculum Development)

Name of FS Student:
Course:
Resource Teacher
Cooperating School:
Date and Time Observed:

At the end of this activity, you will be competent in identifying and

naming different assessment methods used in the classroom.

1. Observe at least three classes and make a list of the assessment

methods used by teachers.
2. In my list, classify assessment methods as to conventional and
authentic and alternative.
3. Describe how each assessment method was used, including my
personal observations
4. Confer with my FS teacher for the assessment list.
5. Reflect on my experience.

My Tools
As you visit schools and observe assessment practices in at least three
classes, document your observations using the activity forms provided for
you in this reference. For your pen-and-paper test items, customize a table of
specification, and prepare the test material based on the prescriptions of the
school where you do class observation.

the assessment method is used
relative to subject matter, levels
of learning behaviour, length,
etc.)

The most commonly used

pencil and paper type of test.

The teacher gave such kind

of assessment to assess the
students knowledge and how
they analyze situation.

The teacher gave a 25 item

identification test to his
students.

The assessment is done a

day after the discussion of the
topic.

the assessment method is used
relative to subject matter, levels
of learning behaviour, length,
etc.)

Oral Recitation

An assessment tool that

enhances the reasoning ability
of the students.

Assessed during the

discussion.

The teacher asks the

students about the concept of
the topic of the day.

The teacher can assess

whether the students are
listening to what she is saying
and she can also know whether
the students can apply their
learning to real world situation,
and can also diagnose the
weakness and strength of the
students communicating skills.

CLASS 3 OBSERVATION

Exercise

Individual activity in
naming compounds

The students are assessed if

they are able to name some
compounds after their
discussion

The teacher writes down the

chemical formulas and let the
students name it.

The teacher gave the task

unannounced so she can
assess whether the students
are reviewing their lessons
even if there are no announced
test, so they will be ready
always.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE

ASSESSMENT TOOLS

Long quiz

ASSESSMENT METHOD WAS USED

The teacher gave a 25 item

test to the students to test
their knowledge and
remembering, it is considered
as the most common
assessment tool a teacher use
because it is easy to
administer, and as I have
observed, the students got
high scores so it means they
understood well the weeks
lesson.

The teacher ask the students

questions to determine if they
understand the lesson, and for
the teacher to know if she have
to adjust, or to change her
strategy in teaching the lesson
of the day, and because she
want to know if the students
have some ideas about the
topic and if there are queries
that is bothering their minds.

The teacher gave an

exercise to know if the students
can work independently and
can give her the correct
answers and if they really know
how to name different chemical
compounds.

Oral Recitation

Exercise

Analysis

1.
Was there a variety of assessment methods used by
the teacher? How relevant was/were the assessment method/s
used?

Yes there were varieties of assessment methods used by the teachers

testing the students knowledge and ability by giving them different test to
assess how far did they already learned and how can they acquire more than
what they already know. They train students by giving them the chance to
learn by themselves with the guide of the teacher and they give them
motivation to enhance their study habits so they wont be behind the class.
The teacher give students tests and quizzes to assess their academic

performance and to know what adjustments are necessary to improve

learning, the assessment tools are used by the teachers to assess students
learning time by time so they will know the aligned strategy to use to their
learners.
2.
Do you think the expected students learning
behaviours indicated in the objectives were properly and
appropriately assessed through those assessment methods?

Students learning behaviours indicates that the assessment methods

properly assessed the students, like in the oral recitation, students
participated and answered the questions of the teacher, and even the
queries of their other classmates, their reasoning skill were enhanced during
the assessment. They were exposed to different ideas and opinions of others,
diverse learners. They have been aware of different notions about the
concept and the theories of the lesson. And as an educator, the teacher
should always aligned the assessment methods she will use to the objective
of the topic she will discuss.
My Reflections

Assessment is a very important tool used by teachers to

determine if the lesson they have presented is well transferred to their
learners, in education, assessment plays a vital role for it measures and tells
whether a teachers teaching strategy is effective or not, and it gives signal if
the teacher has to adjust and to improve his/her skills and strategies in
teaching diverse learners. In assessing our learners, a teacher should always
be fair and free the assessment from bias and assess objectively, not
subjectively or what others usually call favouritism. A teacher should make
rubrics and criteria in judging the learners since every learner have different
learning styles and multiple intelligences, some students are good in pencil
and paper exam, and some are good in expressing what they have learned
orally, and as a teacher, your role is to determine your learners weakness
and strengths so all of the students have equal opportunity in expressing
their potentials and enhance their weak points through the help of the
teacher who should be always considerate and patient to each and every
learner that he/she have to mold. So, the basic action for all of this is for the
teacher to use appropriate and proper assessment methods to different kind
of learners.
