Global challenges regarding energy and climate change, the environment, health, food safety, technology and renewable

solutions, use
and conservation of land and natural resources, and development of the bio-economy, requires greater effort. NMBU is well equipped to
conduct further research in these fields. NMBU's expertise spans entire value chains and includes both basic and applied research.
On 1 January 2014, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and the University of Life Sciences merged and became -NMBU, the
Norwegian University of Life Sciences. NMBU has 1700 employees and 5100 students, and is currently located on two campuses - s,
about 30 km south of Oslo, and Adamstuen in Oslo. In 2019, the new research- and education-building for veterinary science will be
completed and all of NMBU will then be located at Campus s.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences and Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has vacant three Phdpositions (non-permanent positions full time for three years) related to the departments strategic priority on scientific computing in
engineering sciences. The PhD scholarships are within the following three research projects;
1 PhD scholarship: Microscopicfluiddynamicsandparticledepositionphenomenainwatertreatment-ref.no16/03305
1 PhD scholarship: Mining Big Geographical Data for Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Patterns - ref.no 16/03328 (see separate
announcement)
1 PhD scholarship: Navigation Systems for Agricultural Robotics - ref.no 16/03325 (see separate announcement)
The Department of Mathematical Science and Technology at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Technology, has approximately
130 employees and 1100 students, and offers graduate and post-graduate education (Master of Technology / MSc and PhD) within a
number of engineering fields.
The group in Water and Environmental Technology consists of 5 permanent scientific employees, 2 post docs and 13 PhD students, and
approximately 25-30 MSc graduates annually. The research activities are mainly related to water and wastewater treatment and reuse,
water transport, storm water management and pipe technology. Our group has a well developed international network and is involved in
several international research projects as well as innovation projects.

Researchproject
Transport and retention of particles in porous media play a major role both in the subsurface and in processes for water and wastewater
treatment. However, current mathematical models have limited predictive power and the mechanistic understanding of pore-scale
processes is lacking. A better understanding of the underlying processes in filtration is expected to be an important contribution in the
ongoing work on technology development for improved pathogen removal efficiencies in water treatment processes and in reduction of
the health risks.
The overall objective of the research project is to explore microscopic fluid dynamics and particle deposition phenomena in water
treatment systems by development and application of advanced modeling and simulation techniques. Major scientific challenges include
understanding the effects of colloid aggregation, heterogeneities in the porous media and in colloid populations, colloid attachment
behavior under unfavorable conditions, and relating pore-scale processes to the particle removal that can be observed at macroscopic
scales. The experimental research activities will be carried out in microscopic scale and applied in pilot scale.

Maintasks
Computational fluid dynamics and particle deposition
Water and wastewater treatment and reuse.
The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the
appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.
