CREDITS
This T-Bird souvenir program was written
and produced by the Casper College
Athletic Department and the Ofce of
Public Relations at Casper College. It
is designed as a resource for working
members of the media and as a ready
reference for fans and players. We hope
you will take time to patronize and thank
our advertising sponsors for supporting
the T-Birds.

The story of the Casper College mascot, Heyoka, starts with

long-time Casper College physical science instructor Norm Weis.
Weis wanted a mascot to represent the young community college
nestled in the foothills of Casper Mountain. He chose the name
Heyoka, a Native American word for medicine man. The Heyoka,
among other things, was to watch over his tribe and send away
evil spirits. Casper Colleges Heyoka was hoped to create the
kind of spirit that would send away evil teams. In the fall of 1958,
Weis found the perfect student to fit the bill as the first Heyoka,
Leo Sanchez, who he observed singing and dancing and generally
hamming it up. The two worked on the original costume, which
consisted of rabbit fur stretched over a football helmet, epoxy
eyes and a fiberglass beak. The nearly 50 feathers adorning the
wings were all hand sewn by the two men. The goal was for Native
American authenticity. Using the costume as a model in 1995
Casper College alumnus and sculptor Chris Navarro crafted Spirit
of the Thunderbird, a bronze statue now on the front lawn of
the college.
Since that time there have been three Heyokas. That first
one was retired many years ago. Heyoka was replaced with
Thunderbird in 2004.
It is my genuine pleasure to welcome you to
another exciting season of Thunderbird volleyball!
As the president of Casper College, I look forward
to attending the games, along with my wife, and
interacting with you and the rest of our college
community on campus all throughout the year. We
have many reasons to be proud of the team and
their coaches, as the ladies compete with our peer
institutions, represent our student body, and work
for additional conference banners! Casper College
has a cherished legacy of developing strong
athletic programs, and more importantly, strong
student athletes. Our student athletes represent this
college in so many positive ways, whether it is on
the court, in the classroom or in the community.
Our teams strive to build a sense of community in
Casper, bringing students, alumni, residents, and
sports fans together to cheer on their favorite team.
I would also like to thank the T-Bird Booster
Club directors and their many contributors who
help all the T-Bird athletes soar. It is thanks to
the tremendous support of our boosters and
community business partners that the T-Birds are
able to represent our college so well.
Go LadyT-Birds!

Supporting T-Bird Athletes

and Nurturing Young
T-Bird Fans!

ith some rather dramatic ups and

downs in recruiting and roster
changes, Head Coach Angel
Sharman and Assistant Coach Adrian McNamee
have assembled a good-looking team on paper.
Size and offense are both present, however, there
is one stat that doesnt show up on the sheet that
is absolutely critical to pulling off wins.
We have a quiet team, Sharman says.
Sharman and McNamee have been putting a
lot of time and effort into getting the team to
communicate better on the court. Defense is the
core of Sharmans coaching style and, With
defense, you have to be able to talk back there.
The T-Birds have a lot of height in the roster
this year with some great opportunities for
incoming freshmen to play some big roles.
Annie Deininger, 510 freshman from Cave
Creek, Arizona, will be playing the outside. She
has big hops and a lot of punch behind the
ball. McKaylie Tanner, 511 sophomore from
Salt Lake City, Utah, has been improving her
footwork during the spring to better compliment
her already impressive blocking and setting
skills. Shelby McFerrin, 52 sophomore, is
aggressive but quiet, according to Sharman.
Getting her to vocalize more is integral in her
advancement as a defensive player. Sydney
Nielsen is a 510 outside hitter from Kamloops,

British Columbia, Canada. She has gotten a lot

stronger and is jumping higher after spending
some time hitting the weights. She can make a
good pass and is working on her serve receive.
Jessica Pilivi is a 510 freshman from West
Jordan, Utah. Pilivi is a very smooth outside
hitter with a great vision of the court and has
exceptional ball control in the air. Alyssa Earl,
55, is an aggressive defensive player from
right here in Casper. She passes the ball well
and displays great footwork. Improving on her
vocalization will really push her to be a standout athlete this year. Sophomore Savannah
Baldomero returns to Casper from Kapolei,
Hawaii. She has great ball control and can play
the right side, but will be spending more time
working on her communication and ghting for
the libero position.
Precious Atafua, 60, also returns as a
sophomore after an amazing season last year
on the outside. Sharman will be looking to her
for leadership and powerful offensive attacks.
Caspers own Olivia Lami jumps and blocks well
on the right side. She is an extremely hard worker
who hates to lose and could quite possibly be
one of the most aggressive athletes on our side
of the net. Ivana Maric comes to Casper College
from Kralijevo, Serbia. The 60 freshman has
a great serve with a high reach. She also has
good footwork which will help her adjust to the

different pace of the game in the U.S. Carisa

Bacerra, a sophomore from Palm Springs,
California, will be putting more focus in the right
side this year. She is a strong blocker who jumps
well and will have a positive impact on the
front court.
Katja Kohler will be seeing a lot of time as
a setter. Coming from Villingen, Germany, the
60 freshman has great hands and can read
the blockers very well. Briana Halemanu is a
hard-working sophomore from Honolulu. She
has been hitting a lot more aggressively in the
middle and markedly improved her swing over
the spring. Alayna Sheldon, 510 freshman,
from Loveland, Colorado, will be playing the
middle. She has a great arm swing and can cut it
either way. Lousia Krams is a 60 freshman from
Schashagen, Germany, and can crush the ball.
Look for her to be turning some heads from the
middle and the outside.
The T-Birds are in no shortage of size and
talent. Getting them to stretch their vocal
cords and to gel with Sharmans system will
be the dening components to a successful
2016 season.
Were big, said Sharman, but until our
middles get to know the pace of the game and
communication improves, our defense and back
row is going to have to pick it up.

ngel Sharmans
work ethic comes
out of the farms of
Nebraska, where you get
up early and you stay late
until the work is done. Her

coaching philosophy was born out of

playing for one of the legends in this
part of the country.
Sharman was a two-sport star at
Mid Plains College (Nebraska) and
learned her trade from Sally Thalken,
one of the all-time greats in junior
college coaching. She was a gritty
defender on the oor. So it is no
surprise that she brings that re
and commitment to her teams at
Casper College.
Ive always been a defensive
fanatic, Sharman admits. Everyone
needs the big pounders but I have
always believed that defense is the
key to success.
Her teams have shown that grit;
year in and year out Casper is one of
the outstanding defensive teams in
the country. Sharman is the second
active winningest coach in NJCAA
Division I volleyball, having passed
some signicant milestones in her 21
years of coaching. At Casper College,
she has celebrated four regional
championships and her 500th career
victory along the way.
As the winningest volleyball coach
in Casper College program history,
Sharman enters her 16th season
at Casper and says she still gets
a re in my belly in August. Her
career mark is 533-426; her record
at Casper is 423-265 (.626). Her
2003 team, which captured the

colleges rst regional championship,

still holds the record of 45 match
victories in one season.
Sharman has always been player
focused. It shows in the success of
her Thunderbirds: she has coached
six NJCAA All-Americans, 46
All-Region IX performers, and 19
Academic All-Americans with
three of her Casper College teams
earning NJCAA Academic AllAmerica honors.
Sharmans teams win primarily
because of defense and commitment.
She believes in aggressive play at
the net, and a tough defense behind
the blockers. I respect play on the
court and dedication, she says. It
takes heart and discipline to play
the defensive end. If a player runs
through the wall to get a ball up, the
whole team gets the ball up, then it
is the whole team that puts the ball
away. There is not always glamour
in it but the player who makes the
hustle play gets my respect. If
we keep getting the ball back up,
eventually the other team makes
the mistake.
Sharman places a lot of emphasis
on what she calls the rst priority.
I want my players to graduate, she
says. I want them prepared for life
after volleyball.
Sharman also serves as the
athletic director and instructor
at Casper College. She was an
outstanding basketball and volleyball
player at Mid-Plains Community
College (North Platte, Nebraska) and
Fort Hays State (Kansas). Prior to
coaching in Casper, she coached
for ve seasons at Colby College
(Kansas), where she led her teams to
two Region VI playoff appearances.

Education:
Associate degree, Mid-Plains Community College
Bachelors degree, Fort Hays State University
Masters degree, Fort Hays State University

Experience: Sharman has been a college coach for 21 years

with an overall record of 533 wins and 426 losses. She has been
coaching at Casper College since 2001, where she has a record of
423-265.

drian McNamee is in her second season as

assistant coach at Casper College.

A Casper native, McNamee played high school volleyball and

basketball at Natrona County High School where she was a part of
the 98 and 99 state volleyball and basketball championship teams.
McNamee started off her college career at Casper College where
she played for head coach Angel Sharman. McNamee and, her team
ended two years with a 84-28 record and Region IX runners-up. Prior
to coming to Casper College, McNamee was the volleyball coach and
assistant basketball coach at Riverton High School for seven years.
McNamees parents are Monte and Jean McNamee and
Alice Houston.

MORE ABOUT THE PROGRAMS:

Casper College has a national reputation for
excellence in many academic programs. Music,
nursing, art, theater, business, and radiography are
among the programs with national accreditations.
Casper College is also noted for its strong and
varied science programs. Students who complete
their academic work at Casper College transfer to
universities throughout the country. For students
not intending to pursue a four-year degree, Casper
College offers career and technical programs like
automotive technology, diesel power, electronics,
welding, and machine tool technology. These
programs are designed to prepare students for the
technical workplace.
MORE ABOUT THE CAMPUS:
Casper College overlooks the city from the south.
Beautiful red-rock terraces surround the campus.
Recently the college has seen the completion of
five new structures: the Walter H. Nolte Gateway
Center, the Early Childhood Learning Center, the
Residence Hall, the Music Building, and the Casper
College Student Union/University of Wyoming at
Casper building.
