Letter From The Editor

As always, advocacy and activism plays an important role over at Edibles List. I had the
privileged opportunity to participate in local advocacy last month. For this issues Letter
From the Editor, I wanted to share with you my letter to the Mayor of El Monte presented
at a City Council meeting in late September.

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for opening up the floor to discuss the possibility of licensing
medical cannabis businesses in the city of El Monte.
My name is B. Le Grand and I am the CEO and President of Edibles List, LLC, a Los Angeles-based business.
I run an educational magazine and several medical cannabis websites and events.
I have seen the many changes occur in the cannabis industry over the last 7 years. Most importantly, weve
seen progress, acceptance, licensing, taxation and the overall evolution of the only new industry since the tech
industry, established less than 30 years ago.
I started my company with a need for information, and I began filling that gap with a Yelp-like website for
edibles in 2009. I quickly learned that there was a severe lack of education about cannabis and its known
medical benefits. There was no where to go for patients looking for real starting information when it came to
edibles and using cannabis for cancer and chemotherapy. So I launched Edibles Magazine to help educate the
growing cannabis community.
My magazine is now in 5 medical states with subscribers worldwide. What Ive seen in this industry is the
stabilization of the dispensary and manufacturing markets as well as economic benefits and improvements
to funding for local infrastructure. While Los Angeles is still figuring out their licensing structure, places like
Colorado have now sold just short of 1 billion dollars of legal cannabis last year, of which $135 million went to
taxes, and $35 million of that went to schools. Not only does cannabis provide and create an array of new jobs,
in Colorado crime went down nearly 20% since the legalization of cannabis.
Closer to home we have San Francisco, which has allowed for licensing to dispensaries for over a decade. In
2012, San Francisco reported an estimated $41 million in medical cannabis sales, of which $3.5 million went
to taxes, and this is before the marijuana dispensaries zoning recently opened up allowing for more pot shops
and before the sales tax rate went up.

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

While LA officials have shown its reluctance to open up licensing to marijuana businesses, between 20112013, $8.6 million dollars in marijuana taxes from dispensaries were taken in and reported by the city of Los
Angeles. Imagine what the overall tax revenue will be for the 6th largest economy in the world, let alone local
tax to the cities that open up licensing.

10

In the areas that have allowed licensing and dispensary storefronts, I consistently have dispensary managers
and owners testifying that the mandatory heightened security has cleaned up the streets and unwanted
trespassers, rather than attracting crime like some would believe.
While numbers and statistics may turn a skeptic into a believer, the most compelling arguments are the
success stories associated with cannabis. Many of the feature stories Ive highlighted in my magazine involve

EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

the extreme and almost overnight success with cannabis infused products and CBD (cannabidiol - a nonpsychoactive profile of the plant) for children, veterans, and cancer patients alike. Some of the most amazing
stories I have are:
Cannabis taking a 4 year olds 600 seizures a month (from Dravet Syndrome) down to 1 a week
Cannabis miraculously shrinking both benign and malignant brain tumors in innocent children
Cannabis allowing Veterans with PTSD to live a normal life
Taking my Uncles Lymphoma from Stage 4 terminal to complete remission
Nearly curing my 12 year old Huskys degenerative arthritis
Cannabis curing my beauticians dementia and other Uncles dementia
Cannabis personally helps my debilitating back pain, debilitating menstrual cycles and PTSD
The list goes on of success stories with cannabis. While we might not have the Federal green light on
cannabis medical studies, everyone in the cannabis industry has seen exactly what the medical benefits
are. Furthermore, while the government and DEA says there is no medical benefit to marijuana, the
Federal government currently issues federal medical marijuana to two patients, and has been from 1976
to today. Additionally, the Federal government owns the patent on CBD, domestically and internationally,
for cannabis as an antioxidant and as a neuroprotectant. That patent is licensed out to a pharmaceutical
company producing the test drug Epiodilex for epilepsy, which is soon to be released in the public markets,
but cant until cannabis gets rescheduled. The proof that there is medical benefit to cannabis is there.
And with all these facts and all this passion for cannabis and its benefits, I still cant get my own Veteran
father, with PTSD, diabetes, extremely bad heart health, blood clots in his lungs and in his legs, a hernia,
early onset dementia and more, to try CBD or any form of natural medical cannabis to help improve his
health. Until elected officials like yourselves begin to allow licensing and permitting for local dispensaries,
manufacturers and distributors, there will still be a stigma associated with cannabis, its production and its
medical usage.
While cannabis permitting will not be an easy task, it would be better to be a leader, setting an example on
this forefront, helping other municipalities understand that there is tax, economic, and health benefits to
medical cannabis.
I hope that I have made a compelling argument in considering the allowing of licensure in El Monte.
Understand that if El Monte moves forward with cannabis licensing, it will produce a domino effect in
Southern California. We have seen it work in places like Colorado, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii,
and Alaska. Locally we know it works in places like San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, San Diego, Adelanto
and Desert Hot Springs. How much longer will it be before the rest of California jumps on the bandwagon?

U.S. Attorney
General
Says Cannabis is
NOT a Gateway Drug
LC Squared
The federal governments leading law enforcement official took a popular
anti-legalization fallacy to town by openly declaring that cannabis does
not open doors to try harder drugs. U.S. Attorney General Loretta was a
special guest speaker at a town hall for heroin awareness on Sept 20th in
Richmond, Kentucky where she discussed this issue with a group of high
school students. When a student asked her if she believed that recreational
use of cannabis would lead to opioid abuse, she responded, When we talk
about heroin addiction, we usually, as we have mentioned, are talking about
individuals that started out with a prescription drug problem, and then
because they need more and more, they turn to heroin. It isnt so much that
marijuana is the step right before using prescription drugs or opioids. She
also added, it is true that if you tend to experiment with a lot of things in
life, you may be inclined to experiment with drugs, as well. But its not like
were seeing that marijuana is a specific gateway.
To build on this argument, she stated earlier that the leading cause behind
the heroin epidemic is in fact, prescription drugs. When you look at
someone that, for example, has a heroin problem, it very often started with
a prescription drug problem. Something totally legal. Something in every
medicine cabinet. Something you can have prescribed to you in good faith
by a doctor, she said.
This is a remarkable turn of her views on cannabis since she was first sworn
into office in January of 2015 when she vocally declared her opposition
to marijuana legalization. Furthermore, her admission coincide with the
findings of the National Institute on Drug Abuse which states that the
majority of people who use cannabis do not go on to use other, harder drugs.
Further research and studies back her declarations in which the Journal of
the American Medical Association reports a 25% decrease of opioid related
deaths in states with cannabis legalization and that Monitoring the Future
found that more college students who are using cannabis have become less
reliant on painkillers.
With countless government sanctioned studies debunking the gateway
myth that demonized the plant for almost a century, this long awaited public
confirmation from one of our highest ranking law enforcement officials may
indeed be the closest thing yet to an official stamp of approval by the federal
government.

TALKING TOPICALS
with Gar Gar Souders
As topicals gain more notoriety, many people have questions
about how to get the most of their medicine. Gar Souders has
been researching the effects and formulations of cannabisinfused topicals for over a decade. He is here to help and
educate us with a little Q&A.
Dear Gar, I can't smoke and would like to find something in
addition to edibles that I could use for pain to help with my
severe neuropathy. Sheila, West Covina, CA
Hi Sheila, You are certainly on the right track. Topical preparations with
high dosages of both THC and CBD have been shown to have excellent
effects with neuropathy. Topicals are capable of relieving pain quickly,
as wellas improving blood flow to the area. Add a high quality lotion or
salve to the area and massage gently. Apply as needed for relief. Keep
using your edibles, but add a good infused topical lotion to your daily
care for pain management.
Hey Gar, My job requires a lot of detail, so I need to know if I
can use a topical without getting high at work.
Dale, Medford, OR
Hi Dale, I get that question a lot. A topical is not processed by the
body in the same way that it is by using edibles or smoking. Topicals
work via the body's natural CB2 receptors, which are responsible for
the anti-inflammatory effects of cannabis. CB2 receptors work to reduce
inflammation, whereas CB1 receptors control the psychoactive effect and
are not found externally on the body. That makes infused topicals a great
way to go for your pain relief at work or at home.

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

Dear Gar, I am 82 years old and just got a medical

recommendation. My grandson said that I should try a topical
on my hands for arthritis. Elvie, Salinas, CA
Dear Elvie, Your grandson is right. A topical cream, rubbed on your
hands when they hurt, can bring amazing relief. There are many choices,
but find one containing both THC and CBD. Try more than one if you
need to. Find the ones you like that ease or stop the pain. It shouldbring
you surprising reliefwith no side effects.

which many fear would lead to large corporations taking
control of the growing industry. It prohibits smoking or

public places, unless the location has a consumption license.
The Taxation section has a great deal of rumors and
misinformation surrounding it, from the tax rate, to what
the money will be used for, including fears it will turn into
a slush fund. There will be a new 15% excise tax that any
retail shop (medical and recreational) will have to pay, that
is in addition to the state sales tax - medical patients will
not need to pay sales tax - as well as any city or county tax
which they can impose, and an additional cultivation tax

high taxes in some states contributed to a flourishing black
market, and the effect these taxes could have on the effort
to eradicate the black market in California is unknown.

the word legal, and perpetuates the cannabis stigma,
especially when compared to alcohol. When a single
person can go to the liquor store and pick up as much
alcohol as they need to cater a 30 person party, but if
they wish to bring cannabis they would need to bring
several people with them, or risk a misdemeanor
charge if they go alone. There is no clear indication of
an edibles possession limit, and how the 8g concentrate
limit will be calculated with edibles.
The Medical Use section is one of the most controversial
of all, because it solidifies sections of the recently
passed Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act
(MCRSA), thus invalidating any other previous voter
initiatives, i.e., Prop 215. This changes who can write a
recommendation letter and under what conditions. We
have tried to get clarifications from several lawyers on
why this section was included, as it only reiterates parts
of MCRSA, and were not able to get an explanation.

The Regulation and Safety section creates an

in the cannabis world. Originally from New York, his
dedication to the craft of cultivation is well known and
respected. Ed is heralded worldwide as a top authority
on cannabis. With more than 45 years in the industry, he
has written more than a dozen books about marijuana
cultivation and social policy that have collectively sold
more than one million copies. His writing on cannabis was
the first of this subject to be reviewed by the highly regarded

activism for standing up for the right to consume.

Who is Ed Rosenthal? Many of those within the

cannabis world know him as the author of the Bible on

which has sold thousands of copies. If you wanted to learn
how to cultivate, this was the one book you needed in your
cannabis library. With his work as a master grower, activist,
and philosopher, he became an inspiration to those who
were part of the ganja lifestyle. But who is Ed? We hope
that we can all experience the Freak Out with Ed and
what aspects are meaningful to him and what makes him
the Guru of Ganja. On a mild sunny day as the summer
season was coming to an end, we found ourselves along
the border of Oakland and Piedmont, California. We were
invited into an outdoor garden that included a lovely Koi
pond as we sat down with The Guru of Ganja, Mr. Ed

He sees himself as a consultant and

Rosenthal has garnered leagues of

while our host provided a delicious cheese pizza. Ed

shared that Stardust is a light powder that dissolves
in most any type of food and the plan was to enjoy pizza
dusted with our own packet of Stardust al fresco.

As part of his journey, back in the early 2000s Rosenthal

was deputized by the City of Oakland, California to
grow Cannabis for medical use. But so ironically in
2002 the Federal government arrested Ed for cultivation
of cannabis, as the Feds did not choose to recognize the
authority of each state to regulate the use of medical
cannabis. As we know medical cannabis was voted to
legal fruition back in 1996 for California. Even more of
a social debacle they convicted him on the charges as
the Feds denied the facts to the jury that Rosenthal had
the proper authority by the City of Oakland to cultivate.
With an appeal it was overturned, but the Feds once
again choose to convict Rosenthal and in the end they

At this time in Eds life his expansion of his outreach

is an exciting revelation as he has developed a new
exciting edible. Stardust is a cannabis powder that
is in nitrogen packets of 15 milligrams. The nitrogen
keeps It fresh for up to a years and on the packet it
shares how mixing in with coffee, teas and foods are
simple, no fuss and effective. We were in the Rosenthal
Garden amongst the array of light deprivation plants

Each of us there were instructed about the best ways

to infuse with the new edible and how it assimilates
into the system. We were told that in most cases it
takes about 30 minutes to take effect and that adding
Stardust to most anything from drinks, sauces,
most any type of food product would be beneficial
to the ingestor. On to the pizza it was sprinkled
and we enjoyed the taste as well as the stimulating
conversation with the Guru of Ganja.
In his development Ed wanted to see something
that would be convenient to ingest by anyone and

in a milligram count that could be easy to adjust

for most people. The price point was a factor as
well and a suggested retail for the packet is around
$5. Rosenthal could see the growth of acceptance
of infused products and knew that the supporters
would be seeking items that would work into an
active lifestyle. Cannabis users are expanding
their desire to infuse responsibly in different
situations and something such as Stardust
seems to be a great addition for the consumers. It
is well packaged, with a great shelf life and being
that it will blend by taste to most any flavor and
mixes in just about any food or drink products,
what more could you ask for.

Regarding the state of cannabis

through the Gurus eyes, Ed sees there
should be no police overseeing the use
of cannabis, Growing, distribution
and consumption of cannabis should
be in the future civilly regulated, what
a revelation! That we as cannabis
supporters should be self-reliant of
the responsible acts of consumption
and not look to municipal or Federal
authorities to govern personal
cannabis use. Remember it was a
medicine for thousands of years until
the 1930s when our right to consume
was restricted and the prohibition of
cannabis was established. By the way
it is only a plant and does the system

over see how we utilize the other

plants we may tend to grow in our
gardens?
At this time Ed feels that in the future
concentrates will become more popular
with consumers. and dabbing activity
will overtake the desire for flower
based smoking. But he does expect
respect for the flower bud to continue.
As we observe how the levels of
intensity in concentrates creates, over
a period of time, a dependency for a
higher level of infusion. It seemed that

Stardust by Ed Rosenthal. California. Keiko Beatie.

Instant THC

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

Ed wanted to make edible infusion simple and easy for everyone to enjoy and he has achieved
his goal. I tried it with a fruit smoothie and it took about 30 minutes for the effects to take place
with an enjoyable level of infusion. I also had it sprinkled on a cheese pizza while spending time
with Ed at his home in the Oakland area. The Stardust powders were so easy to use, sprinkle,
and appreciate, for the effectiveness of the product as well as the ease of the application. The
retail price will be at close to $5 pre-packet and they do have a case package with a number
of individual packets available to keep you on top of things. A big plus with Stardust is the
travel aspect, youll be able to pack and go with your Stardust tucked away in the secret places.
So when youd like to make it easy with a clean, well tested product that will mix with most
anything, use Stardust!

The innovation of Master Grower Ed Rosenthal has come forth with an exciting new edible.
Stardust is a powdered THC in 15 mg packets. Stabilized with nitrogen to remain fresh for over
a year, the THC powder can be mixed in most any food or drink. Coffee and tea are the most
convenient items for infusion, and that is what the packaging suggests. There is not a specific
flavor or taste to the Stardust, so sprinkle, mix, or blend it as you wish.

Blossom Bar.

I couldnt wait to try the Nature Nurse Blossom Bar,

simply based on the fact that an actual nurse made the
product I was testing. I felt confident that Americas
most trusted profession wouldnt let me down and
it definitely didnt. The packaging is absolutely going
to be distinctive and I can already see this turning
into a trustworthy brand. I thought it was medicated
deodorant when I first grabbed the Blossom Bar, but
after carefully reading the label I realized it was a topical
that you can put wherever you have aches or pains. The
first place I tried it was on the bottom of my feet because
I had been on them all day filming, and it seemed to
work relaxing my entire body and relieving the burning
sensation I was having.
I absolutely love how simple it is to apply the topical.
I didnt have to stick my hand in a jar or tube, rub it
together and then apply. All I had to do was take the top
off, wind the bottom, and apply more. It was so effortless
and I really appreciated that. The scent is faint, and can
easily be worn by itself or underneath your favorite
fragrance. Apply anytime anywhere, and voilabye
bye pain. Of course there are many topical products to
choose from, but if you want one that is made with an
extra dose of love then try Nature Nurse today.

Nature Nurse. California. Tanganyika.

Chocolate.

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

Obviously one of the perks of this job is to try all of the latest greatest products of this
amazing industry. Well chocolate is a constant staple on my taste buds, so reviewing
them has become like a second language for me. When I saw Nature Nurse, and all of
its packaging glory I knew I couldnt wait to try this brand. This deep dark chocolate
is all natural and 100% organic, which is what I love the most about it. I also love the
fact that you have a CBD option for those lovers of the plant who dont necessarily
like the psychoactive effects of cannabis, and it also has CO2 extract infused version
with THC for those who dont mind the effects at all. Everyone seems to walk away
happy from this amazing line of confections.

26

For me the best part of the product was that knowing that the entire package was only
75 mg. Micro dosing is becoming increasingly popular. I can eat a 1000 mg brownie in
one sitting and be down for the count the rest of the day, or I can slowly eat a piece of
Nature Nurse throughout the day and still be extremely productive. This product is
great for the elderly, children, veterans, and also for those suffering from debilitating
illnesses. It even gives you information about your endocannabinoid system to read,
right on the back of the package that everyone should know, but sadly, usually dont.
If that made you curious enough to seek out these products just to see what they say
and you end up buying them, then I not only have I done my job, but youre sure to
end up feeling happy too.

Kings Blend Citrus Drink. California. Tanganyika.

Kings Blend Citrus hybrid drink is the latest cannabis infused thirst quencher to hit the market.
When I first got the bottle I thought we had finally reached that pivotal moment that we all
know is coming where cannabis infused beer is going to be the new trend. Well even though
the glass has the traditional beer look it is so completely far from the beer taste, which had me
doing a standing ovation in the middle of my living room. This tasty concoction powered by
Apple Farms smells like a lime/ginger ale soda almost. Fizz and the gingery scent were the first
impressions that I got of this intriguing drink. Heavily Carbonated with the consistency taste of
a Sprite including that bite that hits the back of the throat as it glides down to belly-land.
This really does make you feel grown like you're drinking a beer, but it wont get you sloppy
wasted or have you sweating when you really shouldnt be. The fact that this is 100 mg of a hybrid
strain of awesomeness just seemed to call
out to me over and over again. I drank this
over dinner and conversation, and before I
knew it the whole thing was gone. It has a
slight cannabis aftertaste that reminded me
of a baby dab, so that helped me anticipate
or gauge what my high would be like by the
end of the night. I wouldnt be saying it if it
wasnt true, but I really enjoyed this drink.
Knowing that the Kottonmouth Kings stand
behind it with their reputation helped seal
the deal for me. I cant wait to try the other
flavors, so if you know where to find them
be sure to let me know how they taste!

Bone Head Hash. California.

Tanganyika.
Believe me when I tell you that good hash
makes the world go round. It doesnt really,
but I know It helps out a lot. Bone Head Hash
are my new best buds mostly figuratively,
but Im working on the physical part as I type
this. There hash smells so dank when you
open the jar. It just smells like it was taken
from a strain that was sticky, dense, and
super dank all at the same time. The potent
strain that I reviewed was called Royal
Hawaiian, but Im so incredibly curious to
see what other options they have available. It comes in 1-gram jars that are so cute and perfect for
travel. It fit right into my purse for those days I want to spice up my joints when out and about.

Opening the jar not only greets you with an aroma of cannabis, but it has this brown crumble
that you can keep in big chunks or easily break down even more. The way I consumed it was
by sprinkling some of the brown crystals over a bed of fresh JFK or Juicy Fruit Kush, rolled
it up, and the marriage was something completely out of the Ganja Gods playbook. Im so
serious guys, this had me putting out my perfectly rolled joint after a few puffs, and trust me

Cannavis. California and Oregon. Patrick Ian Moore.

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Cannavis I recently had the opportunity to try out the
Cannavis Syrups in the 0.5FL OZ size test tubes, which each contain 50MG of THC. I wasnt totally sure
what to expect before tasting these. Theyre certainly titled correctly, as Syrups, because theyre thick,
sticky, and sweet. It looked like the kind of thing that would taste be the flavoring poured over shaved
ice and snow cones and thats exactly how it tasted with a semi-subtle cannabis aftertaste that was
not exactly unpleasant. This product is sugar free, gluten free, kosher, vegan, Non-GMO, and lab tested.
First I tried the Peach flavored syrup. Its strong tasting and very sweet. This might be a bit too
powerful on the palette for some users, and it really is quite a bit like drinking the Slurpee flavoring all
by itself. If you dont happen to have a snow cone machine on hand at home, the syrup can easily be
added to ginger ale, or any lemon-lime soda to help
tone it down. The effects are very nice. The relaxing
feelings come on slowly and in a time release
fashion, especially if you consume by sipping on a
cocktail instead of shooting the whole tube. I tried
the Blackberry flavor next, about two hours later.
Doubling the dose put me on the couch for the rest
of the evening and enabled me to mellow out and
enjoy a few hours of Netflix uninterrupted.

Casa Luna Organic Chocolate Bar.

California. Lindsey Hitt.

This was a top shelf chocolate bar, even without the cannabis.
Smooth and slow melting as all fine chocolate should be. The Casa
Luna bar is segmented into six 20mg pieces. Each piece is about
5 grams of chocolate and enough to medicate for a little over an
hour. Savory dark chocolate tang is followed by a minty cannabis
taste. This chocolate bar is almost reminiscent of Andes Mints
with a smoother texture. As a chocolate lover, my immediate
desire was to eat the entire bar. Personally experiencing menses
and slight dysmenorrhea (PMS) this was the perfect solution.
I am a big believer that mental stress can put further stress on
physical problems. I found this chocolate bar to lighten the
mental stress, almost balancing hormones and releasing tension
possibly both at the same time. This is my personal experience
at 55 early 30s, and 125 lbs. Dosage can always vary based on
the varying sizes of individual patients.

If youre an extremist, youll probably just do the test tubes as super sweet shots, and thats great.
If youre a bit more reserved when it comes to sweetness, Id recommend pouring it into soda over
ice, stirring it up, and enjoying the drink as you casually sip it. As it says right on the label: Lean
Back, and Relax.

Drip Ice Cream. Oregon. Keiko Beatie.

The flavors I was delighted to try were Salted Caramel and Lemon Zest,
which is a vegan version. The creamy texture of the vanilla was wonderful
and the handmade salted caramel is one of the best Ive ever had. This was
infused for the cup at 15 mg and it was labeled in 5 mg increments. You
could taste the care in the making of this fine dessert and I was excited to
taste the vegan Lemon Zest. The list of ingredients for this frosty vegan
treat are: coconut milk, coconut cream, agave nectar, lemon juice, vanilla
paste, cannabis extract, vanilla extract, lemon zest, salt, and guar gum. The
Salted Caramel contents are: milk, cream, sugar, dairy blend (whey, milk
protein, fat free dry milk), unbleached flour, palm oil, cannabis extract,
vanilla extract, cocoa, and chocolate. They also have 75 mg cup sizes and
Im looking forward to trying the Cookies and Cream, and the Honey

Iris Gummies: Bears on Clouds. California. Lindsey Hitt.

Jerry Garcia would light up the clouds over these candies. These sugary fluff ball gummies will
put your head in exactly the right spaces. The sweetness hits first, as the taste experience begins
sinking in and the light fruit flavor with overlapping floral hints from the cannabis CO2 oil blend
together to make this a delightfully medicated treat. A mellow and easygoing high lasting at least
3-4 hours can be expected per single, 20 gram weight, 25mg THC gummy bear. The tapioca base
of this edible makes it the chewiest of textures and distances its taste from the gooey density of
something like Swedish fish. Prepare to delve into a magically creative mood, productive and
artistic, as well as making already enjoyable tasks even more pleasurable: like gardening, music,
reading and movies. I went for a Sunday walk enjoying nature in the park and stretching through
some minor neuropathy I have in my feet. Napping was also appealing, and thats always better
on a Sunday. Bears on Clouds are a simple, sweet, and convenient way to enjoy your medicine.

START LOW, GO SLOW

Precautions for edible consumers
Dr. Robert Setari
When it comes to medical marijuana it is important to be well informed on the benefits and
the side effects. Regardless of whether you are using cannabis for medicinal or recreational
purposes... Knowledge is power and safety!
This is especially applicable to edibles. Smoking marijuana releases the active ingredient Delta-9
TetraHydroCannabinol (THC). Ingesting marijuana follows a different pathway - consumed
cannabis is metabolized by the liver into 11-Hydroxy TetraHydroCannabinol. This ingested
marijuana metabolite is twice as strong and lasts at least twice as long as the inhaled metabolite.
Furthermore, smoking marijuana brings on effects within minutes. Ingesting marijuana can take
several hours before you feel the effects.
It is easy to misjudge the effects
of an edible and overdose. Now a
marijuana overdose will not kill
you, but you may feel like youre
going to die or almost wish you
were. So here we are going to lay
down some absolute golden rules
that you should read, follow, and
use as a reference.

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

While exact dosages will vary

based on individual body weight
and metabolism it seems that for
the majority of the population 10
- 25 milligrams of THC will relax
muscles and give you a blissful
feeling of euphoria. In fact, you
may laugh easily and for no
apparent reason. You should get a
great restful night of sleep.

38

These effects can last from 4-6 hours, sometimes longer. Remember that everyone has a different
rate of metabolism and weight, general health, and built up tolerance (from extended use through
time) can be key factors. To ensure consumer safety we suggest that you treat marijuana edibles
like any other medication. Safety, safety, safety! And to help you get the right education weve
compiled list of absolute rules for cannabis edibles.

EDUCATION
TEXT HERE

Go Low and Go Slow

Start with a low dose of 10 milligrams of THC and wait two

hours before consuming any more cannabis. Your digestive
system processes food, including pot, slowly. It usually takes
about 90 minutes - 2 hours for food to make it to the small
intestine where it is absorbed. It can take even longer if youre
eating a substantial meal or a fatty meal. After absorption
the cannabis oil will be metabolized by the liver; THC is
converted into another chemical called 11-hydroxy-THC
and released into the bloodstream. This metabolite is actually
very potent, which is why edibles have such a strong effect.

Always Label Marijuana Edibles

Cannabis-infused foods are essentially medicated foods.

Like any medication you should always label your edibles
with warnings that they are medicated foods, the date they
were made, the dosage of marijuana contained within. There
are countless stories of a roommate or house guest who has
accidentally consumed a medicated food. Be responsible and
protect everyones safety.

Never Mix Marijuana Infused Edibles with

Alcohol or Other Prescription Medications

Marijuana use has never had any reported deaths when

used by itself. Thats because it is essentially impossible to
overdose. However, when marijuana is combined with
alcohol or other substances there can be an additive reaction
which can cause very uncomfortable side effects, such as
vertigo/dizziness/the spins and even more dangerous
effects such as respiratory distress or even death.

DO NOT Drive or Operate Heavy Machinery

Marijuana is a drug and has some potent effects on the brain.

Driving while high is the same as driving while drunk; and
it is considered a DUI. Be smart and be safe. Do not endanger
yourself or the public.

DO NOT Consume Medical Marijuana on an

Empty Stomach

Marijuana edibles have a much stronger effect when consumed

on an empty stomach. So make sure to eat a good portion
of non-medicated food along with your medicated food.

Keep Away From Children and Pets

You must treat your medicated foods like any other

medication. Keep it locked up or at least away from
children and animals. Common sense is the rule here.
As your children grow explain to them that these foods
have medicine in them and are exclusively for your use.

Even if you are using cannabis or CBD for your

pets, its important to keep it in a safe place.

Have Normal Non-Medicated Food

Available

The munchies are a well-documented side

effect of marijuana. Make sure you have normal
non-medicated food around so you can snack on
something other than more marijuana edibles.

Have CBD available

Another important cannabinoid is CBD. It has less

of the psychotropic effects of THC which means that
CBD can be used to lessen the paranoid, panicky
feelings that can occur with an overdose of THC.
Even with your precautions errors can happen and
having some CBD capsules or CBD rich flower
around for vaping can save you hours of misery.
Think of CBD as a sort of antidote that will take the
edge off and reduce the bad side effects of too much
THC. If you do not have CBD readily available you
could try citrus fruits as a weaker substitute.

Stay Calm and Carry On

Too much THC can cause anxiety, vertigo, nausea,

hallucinations, and even a panic attack. Keep
reminding yourself that YOU WILL NOT DIE!
Have a friend talk you down and help ease your
paranoia. If you are alone lay down and try to
fall asleep. If you have taken your marijuana
food with other substances like alcohol or other
drugs then you should consider going to the
Emergency Room. Always better safe than sorry!

Never Trick Anyone with Medicated

Foods Without Their Consent!

Marijuana edibles are not a joke! They are medicated

foods and there are many laws in place which make it
illegal to medicate someone without their knowledge.
This is actually a criminal offense. You can be
prosecuted for assault and battery. Medicated foods
are not for playing around. They should be treated
with the same respect as any other medication. They
may be more fun and natural
or organic to take than
prescription medications,
but that doesnt make
them any less serious.

GROWING is Easy, Fun and Exciting!

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

Plus growing from seeds is more of a

challenge, and the joy of seeing it pop
open and have a root grow can be easy,
fun and exciting.

40

With seeds youll want to start out by

taking the seeds and placing them
in a container with a small piece of
sandpaper. Shake the seeds in the
container for just a minute to slightly
break down the surface of the seeds.
This will assist with making it easier
for the seeds to germinate. Next, soak
the seeds in cold water until they split
open. This can take 2 to 6 days, and
during this time youll need to change
the water every two days. Once they
open and a root starts to grow to 3
to 5 mm in length, you can begin to
transplant them into soil. This can take
up to between 10 to 14 days to reach this
exciting and critical point.

Without being in soil there are plenty of nutrients within

the seed for it to proliferate as long as you keep it well
moisturized. Some of the vital nutrients of proteins and
carbs transform into glucose, which is exactly what the
seeds need for strong growth. You should use a soil with
fewer nutrients to start, as you could burn the plant with
too much added nutrient content. Soil made specifically
for seedlings and clones that have low nutrient quantities
is best.
Depending on how large youd like your plant to grow
is how big your pot should be. Consider the lighting as
well and where youll be growing this plant at. Indoor
or outdoor? I dont like to transplant as who wants
to run the risk of having a plant go into shock when
transporting from small to big pot. Place your rooted
seed in a inch hole in your pot with organic seeding
soil. Each seed should have its own pot. Since the roots
will always grow down, you dont have to worry how
you place the seeds inside the soil. Place the seed in the
hole, and gently cover it with the soil. Spray the soil with
water, it will settle down on its own so there is no need
to press the soil down further. Sit back and wait as the
germination process will begin, and if elements are right
you should see sprouts within about a week. Its so much
fun when you get to this point!
Continue to spray water a little every day or when you
see the soil getting dry on top. I would use a sprayer
to water during this delicate time. Its a perfect balance
youre seeking in watering as, too much water can cause
the plants to lose out on valuable oxygen and too little
can stop the germination process. The soil needs to stay
adequately moist, not too dry, and not overly soaked.
The seedling wont use much water, but a lot of the
water evaporates fast. This is the major reason why
seedlings should never go on a windowsill or near a
heater. Spraying the plants 1 or 2 times throughout the
day should be plenty.
Lighting is the second most important item when it comes
to growing. Light and water help convert carbon dioxide
into oxygen and glucose necessary resources for plant
growth, and hats photosynthesis. If your plant doesnt
receive enough light, the root, branch, and stalk
development will not occur as it should. Once the stalk

420 GAMES

LC Squared
On Saturday, September 24th and October 1st, Colorados Denver and
Boulder will both play host to the newly innovated 420 Games, which is
a series of athletic events held to dispel the myth of cannabis users being
nothing but lazy stoners, and to show they are capable of using said drug
to lead healthy, active, and responsible lives. Prior to its move to Colorado,
the 420 Games have been held in California and Washington, and theyll
make their way to Oregon in late October. Participants can reserve a spot
to partake in a 4.20 mile fun run around scenic areas alongside hundreds if
not thousands of other fellow cannabis users. However, participants will be
asked not to smoke cannabis or eat edibles on the day they participate as it
is designed to be a family friendly event.

THE 420 GAMES WILL BE HELD AT :

Berkeley Lake Park in Denver on Sept 24th and
Boulder Reservoir in Boulder on Oct 1st before moving on to
Portland, Oregon on the 29th.
Tickets are on sale now on the official website at 420games.org

These games were organized by cannabis entrepreneur and gym owner,

Jim McAlpine, who created them to be the antithesis of the Cannabis
Cup. I look at those events as consumption-based events. Theyre really
focused on weed, on Lets get high. My events from the outside look like
your average 5K run. He is advertising the
events as a fitness first, cannabis second, as
he sees that consumption based events give
the industryand cannabisa bad name. He
elaborates, Theres always going to be a place
for the stoner lifestyle. And I dont look down on
stoners. I was a stoner once, and I dont want to
see stoners ostracized or chastised. I want to be
a beacon of hope to show people that you can still use cannabis and change
your lifestyle and be very active. I use marijuana every day, and Im very
successful. Its not the plant that holds them back its their lifestyle, and
they need to rearrange their priorities.

1/2 cup finely shredded sharp Cheddar
cheese
2 eggs
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon seasoned salt or to taste
1 hard-boiled egg, cut in half

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and grease the foil.

Transfer beef mixture to the prepared baking sheet and form into a skull-shape, leaving holes for "eye sockets" and a "mouth". Place hard
boiled egg halves into the "eye sockets", shaping the beef mixture around them to hold in place.
Mix ketchup, brown sugar, and barbeque sauce together in a bowl until sauce is smooth. Spread 1/2 of the sauce onto the entire beef
mixture, including the "eyes" and "mouth".
Bake in preheated oven until no longer pink in the center, about 50 to 60. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should
read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).

TAXES

TEXT

TAXES

"Im not going to file Whats the worst

that could happen?"
Elizabeth Sheldon, Esq.

The Question To file or not to file

We all know that the federal government has continued to

refuse to make the canna-business easy. No one is skipping
down the path of stress free commerce- not the growers, the
product manufacturers, the dispensary owners, or even the
consumers, but what does this mean for taxes? The current
trend toward not filing tax returns for those in the canna
industry, is both an interesting one, and a troubling one.
As a tax attorney whose emphasis includes the cannabis
industry, I am often told, not asked, that my client is
choosing not to file tax returns let them find me, is the
common +phrase. My response they probably will. So,
what happens next? Lets find out.

You have to file its the law

Im sure we all know people, well before entering into

the world of canna-business, who never paid taxes. Who
claimed that there were exempt from filing or paying taxes,
and that income tax was just illegal. Suffice it to say, this is
not correct these people are tax protesters. I had a sitting
Tax Court Judge tell me that every tax protester will get
their day in court, and every tax protester will lose. I can
quote passages from the Internal Revenue Code and related
Court decisions, but instead, please believe me when
I tell you that the law says that you have to report your
income, regardless of the source (legal, illegal, everything
in between), and pay the requisite tax. If you really want
the details, call me.

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

What if you dont file what next civil

enforcement path

The IRS has a number of resources at their fingertips, with the

most commonly used tool being the Substitute For Return,
or SFR. This is where the IRS guesstimates your income,
allows only a single standard deduction, and taxes you at the
highest rate available to them. All eyes then turn to you, the
taxpayer, to prove them wrong. In the meantime, the penalties,
and the interest assessments, continue to accrue, and perhaps
IRS eyes start looking at more and more years to file for you,
you know, as a courtesy youre welcome. Meantime, youre
digging through your closets, shoe boxes, and recycle bins
looking for receipts, pay stubs, income statements, proof of
expenses, to try and limit the damage, but the cat is long out
of the bag and youre left sweeping grains of litter into a pile
hoping for relief. This isnt a good feeling.
EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

So, now that the IRS is your new tax

preparer, it seems likely that theyll
want to review older returns youve
already filed, as a courtesy to assure
you that you were correct when filing;
they can audit already filed returns
within their statutory window. If they
find fraud, there is no time limit and
the IRS is now examining your tax
returns with a microscope looking for
things to question. They usually find
something and the entire process can
take months or even years to resolve.
More likely than not, once done,
youre left with a Notice of Deficiency,
or a bill for unpaid taxes, plus the
penalties & interest already discussed.
Rest assured that they may keep an
eye open on future returns as well,
again, as a courtesy. Keep in mind,
this is only the less invasive path of
civil review.

I can live with the civil review

process, Im STILL not filing.
Up next, criminal prosecution

The IRS toolbox doesnt stop at SFRs

or civil enforcement, sometimes this
can just be the beginning. They have
an entire unit specifically charged with
investigating taxpayers and referring
them for criminal prosecution; they
are called the Criminal Investigation
Division or CID. Let me toss a few
names your way: Lauren Hill, Wesley
Snipes, Martha Stewart, Richard
Pryor, Ja Rule, Chuck Berry, Darryl
Strawberry, Pete Ross, and of course,
Al Capone. These are people you
have probably heard of and you may
even know that they all have served
time for tax evasion. I would like to
tell you that only famous people are
prosecuted, but simply put nope.
CID is a very busy unit within the IRS.
I have received calls from special
agents (those employed by the CID),
investigating ex-clients, everyday
Joes and Janes like yourselves. They
dont discriminate and they dont
back down. They also wont limit

their investigation to you and your

finances, but can and generally will
subpoena friends, family member,
neighbors, anyone they think can help
shed light on their investigation and
further their case. It is a process to be
avoided at all costs if possible. How
do you do that?

Maybe its time to consider

filing after all

A brief recap of our path may be

helpful here: If you choose not to file
your returns, you take your chances,
and youll probably lose. You may not
be tagged today, or even tomorrow,
but most likely in the months and
years ahead, when records are no
longer available and the additional
assessments (penalties and interest
assessments remember those?), are
skyrocketing, theyll come calling.
The IRS has filed SFRs for you and
presented you with a bill that might
mean selling your car, or even your
home just to try break even. CID
has reached out to everyone you
know, and the US Attorney General
is reviewing your case. Since youre
a canna-professional that likely wont
go well. Here is the game youre
playing, the risk youve decided to
take with your financial future and
your very freedoms.
On the other hand; you can file your
returns, take charge of the process,
and have a hand in steering your own
fate. There are tax professionals in
the cannabis industry who are ready
to help you and make sure that your
returns and your tax life are set up in
your best interest, and to help protect
your position with the IRS (ah-hem!).

The decision to file is yours, so

make an informed choice!

CBD: THE OVERDOSE

ANTIDOTE

B. Le Grand
In many new cases in the media, we are seeing veterinarians
and emergency room doctors counting their arising weekly
intakes of overdoses on cannabis infused edibles. In each
story they say, Theres nothing that can be done. We
are here to let you know that this is not true, something
absolutely can be done. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a known
tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) inhibitor, which means that a
CBD dose can be administered to any patient or any that is
feeling too high. No matter where you stand or how you
feel about the cannabis plant, the medical research shows
definite evidence of THC metabolizing at a different rate
when cannabidiol was administered.
In 1996 a study was conducted by the Department of
Pharmacy, at the University of California, San Francisco
determining that cannabidiol inhibited the metabolization
of
tetrahydrocannabinol
and
cyclosporine
(an
immunosuppressive drug used to prevent the rejection of
grafts and transplants), in mouse and human microsomes.
The study found that cannabidiol selectively decreased THC
levels in human cells, specifically the group of metabolizing
enzymes in the human liver. Another study was conducted
early last year in January of 2013 that found CBD inhibited
paranoid and psychotic symptoms in human test subjects
when administered prior to dosing intravenous THC.

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

The Beckley Foundation also conducted a study on a

female human. In this two day study, on one occasion, she
was given a mixture of intravenous THC + CBD and on the
other day she was administered pure THC. With the CBD
mix she was euphoric, coherent and happy. In contrast with
the pure THC, she was paranoid, couldnt form thoughts,
couldnt remember things, and was extremely mentally
uncomfortable with how she was feeling.
THC is the psychoactive compound that makes you feel
high and sometimes too high if ingested in concentrated
forms. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the answer when a human or
animal overdoses on marijuana. On a molecular level,
CBD inhibits and decreases THC levels in the body. It is a
statistical fact that there have been zero deaths in history
from cannabis alone. Do not let a doctor tell you that nothing

can be done for your dog that accidentally ate your roach,
hash, or brownie. Cannabidiol or high CBD oils, including
extractions from the legal hemp plant are available at your
local cannabis dispensary or you can purchase sublingual
products online and have it shipped to you for your medicine
cabinet.
The dosing for a pet or a dog will not need to be nearly as
high for a human, but its important to spread the word and
knowledge about this so that eventually veterinary offices
and hospitals have cannabidiol on hand as the antidote for
a THC overdose. There are many CBD drops available at
shops and legally online. HempMeds Px makes an affordable
sublingual tincture called Cibdex, which usually runs about
$30. Valley Hi in Woodland Hills, Calif. carries it, so do many
other shops.

ACTUAL STUDY FINDINGS:

Edibles Magazine Issue 28

Inhibition of cyclosporine and tetrahydrocannabinol

metabolism by cannabidiol in mouse and human microsomes.
[W Jaeger, L Z Benet, L M Bornheim. Department of Pharmacy,
University of California, SF]
ABSTRACT 1. The in vitro and in vivo effects of cannabidiol
on mouse and human liver microsomal metabolism of the
immunosuppressive drug cyclosporine and the psychoactive
compound tetrahydrocannabinol have been examined. 2.
Preincubation of mouse or human liver microsomes with
cannabidiol decreased the formation of all detectable cyclosporine
metabolites by 73-89%. 3. In vivo cannabidiol treatment of mouse
similarly decreased the formation of all detectable cyclosporine
metabolites by 60-86%. 4. Preincubation of human liver
microsomes with cannabidiol selectively decreased the formation of
tetrahydrocannabinol metabolites catalyzed by cytochrome P4503A
by 60% but had no effect on P4502C9-catalyzed metabolites. 5.
Cannabidiol has the potential to clinically affect cyclosporine
metabolism which may result in increased cyclosporine blood
levels and an increase in its toxic side effects, and likewise may
also affect tetrahydrocannabinol and its metabolite levels in man.

The First City in

Tennessee to

Decriminalize
Cannabis

The lead sponsor of this bill,

Councilman Dave Rosenberg, has
said, All this bill does is give police
the option of not treating someone
with a little pot like a hardened
criminal. Because when you start
treating good members of our society
like criminals they begin acting like
criminals. Nashvilles mayor Megan
Berry is set to sign the bill into law
and has been supportive of measures
to decriminalize cannabis. This
legislation is a positive step forward
in addressing the overly punitive
treatment of marijuana possession
in our state that disproportionately
impacts low-income and minority
residents, she said.
However, despite this mitigation,
police still get the final say on whether
or not offenders will face either a mere
fine or criminal charges which are
some of the grievances that opponents

of the bill have expressed.

State Rep. William Lamberth
likened the new ordinance to
a Russian roulette situation
in which offenders would
be unsure of what penalty
theyll face. Initially, when
the bill was drafted, the
measure wouldve made
minor possession of cannabis
an automatic civil penalty. But
after some opposition from the
Nashville Metro Police, the bill
was changed to make the
civil penalty an option.
In spite of these
misgivings, supporters of this bill
see this as a rewarding first step as other
cities around the state
are taking note of this
measure as Memphis is expected
to follow suit
this October.
Should the
results
be
favorable,
Nashville
may indeed
explore options to that
allow more leniency for cannabis
possession.

Tennessee has taken its first
progressive step in which the capital
city of Nashville has finally passed
a decriminalization measure for
cannabis possession. The Metro
Council voted 35-3 to give the
approval of legislation that allows
police officers the option of giving
offenders who possess half-an-ounce
or less a more lenient civil penalty
which includes a $50 fine and 10 hours
