Appendix

Note: The report is structured in such way that questions are shown in the
start of each the two different sections with their figure. What follows is a
serious of hand calculations (scanned) and worked out with pencil. The
pencil was used to avoid pens irregularities and to guarantee the neat
look of the hand calculations. Only figures were drawn in pen since they
are copied from the question and technically cant be done wrong. Most of
question 1 concept was extracted from the notes and the reference is
stated as it should on the calculation to indicate what follows is from our
lecture notes only.

Question 1
For question 1 a rectangular plate is given which is simply supported on
all sides and is subjected to a total load P which is uniformly distributed
over the central rectangular region indicated in the figure below. Bending
rigidity of the plate is represented by D and the Poissons ratio is can be
considered as 0. We are asked to complete the following tasks:
(a)

Derive expressions for the distributions of deflection and

bending moments throughout the plate

(b)

Compare the central deflection of the plate under this loading

condition with a total load P uniformly distributed over the entire
plate and a point load P applied to the center of the plate.
Comment on the results of the comparison

Figure 1 shows the simply supported rectangular plate.

Comments on Part b

It is of high importance to highlight the following:

The three cases that we investigated, UDL, point load and partial UDL
case, all seemed to provide us with different values. The observation is
that the UDL case had the lowest deflection of 0.00532 /, with the
partial UDL coming second with a value of 0.01062 / and the Point
Load third with a value of 0.0131p2 /. This genuinely gives us the idea
that deflection decreases as the area of the UDL decreases.

Question 2
For question two we are given an axisymmetric shell with a meridional section
shown in the figure below. This shell is composed of a truncated conical section
covered by a spherical cap of raidus R, and is simply supported at its base. The shell
is filled with a fluid of weight density (per unit volume) up to the level of the
intersection between the conical section and the cap. The shell has self-weight per
unit area and a gas kept at a pressure P fills the internal volume of the cap. We are
asked to complete the following tasks:
a) Obtain the expressions for the membrane stress resuultants for a generic load
combination of ,,. Express our solution in terms of for the cap and y for
the conical section.
b) Plot the distribution of the meridional and tangential stresses over the shell
for R=5m, L=10m, =7 kN/m^3, =2kN/m^2 and P=5kN/m^2
c) Condsidering a shell with R=2m, L=5m, =7 kN/m^3, =2kN/m^2 and
P=0.5 kN/m^2.
i)
ii)

Find the position along the meridional line of the cone section at which
the meridional stress is zero
Identify the position along the meridional line of the cone section at
which the tangential stress reaches its peak. Calculate the value of the
maximum tangential stress.
