Acoustical Criteria
.1

Noise levels, due to equipment and ductwork, to permit attaining

sound pressure levels in all 8 octave bands in occupied spaces
will conform to the following NC curves:

.2

In addition to complying with the standard full octave band sound

pressure levels based on NC criteria, acoustical performance of
fans, air handling units, terminal devices, pressure regulating
boxes, etc., when operating under design conditions shall not
create any objectional pure tones. A pure-tone is defined as a
peak sound pressure level which, when measured in 1/3 octave
band frequencies, is higher by more than 5 dB's than adjacent 1/3
octave band frequencies.

.3

Comply with specified NC levels for radiated noise from pressure

regulating boxes and/or duct breakout noise from floor-by-floor air
handling equipment by having full octave band sound pressure
levels of at least two contiguous frequencies tangent to the NC
spectrum. In other words, a single frequency controlled NC
environment is considered obtrusive and unacceptable.

ACOUSTIC INSULATION

Maximum Sound Power Level (dB)

.1

Suitable Acoustic Insulation on all vibration equipment, parts and all other
necessary connections shall be included in the tender. The acoustic
treatment shall be capable of reducing all noise transmitted from the
Plantroom ductwork and etc., to noise level not exceeding the noise
criterion curves as given in the current edition of the ASHRAE Guide and
Data Book And AS2107 recommendation.

.2

Notwithstanding the above, all supply and return ductwork of G.I. sheet
metal construction shall be internally lined with 50 mm thick duct liner
especially made from glass fibres or resin bonded fibreglass with
Neoprene or similar facing having a density of 2 lb/ft3 for a minimum
distance of 6 metres from the unit. Perforated GI sheet having minimum
opening of 40 % shall be firmly fixed to the liner. The lining and its method
of fixing shall be suitable for air velocities up to 15 m/s without erosion of
the lining and to the approval of the Engineer. Ductwork acoustically
treated shall have its external dimensions increased by 100 mm from
those shown on the drawings to maintain the required internal
dimensions.

.3

Unless the work is strictly adhered to the two paragraphs above, and to
the satisfaction of the Engineer, the work shall not be passed satisfactory
and no certificate of taking over shall then be issue.

.4

Where necessary to achieve NC required, the sound treatment shall

include for insulation the plantrooms and AHU rooms with 2 layers of
fibreglass insulation, each layer having 50 mm thick fibreglass of 2 1b/cu.
ft. density and each layer separated by a 25 mm air gap formed by 1
timber battens. Timber battens of size 2 x 2 spaced at 4 ft. centres shall
be used to construct the framework for each layer of insulation, the final
layer comprising perforated hardboard of 1/8 diameter holes spaced at
centres.
