What is Pipe?
The pipe is a
straight pressure
tight
cylindrical
hollow, used in the
piping system to
transport
liquid,
gas and sometimes
solids.

Pipe Dimension - Size

Pipe Dimensions are covered in following Standard
ASME B36.10 Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel
Pipe (Carbon & Alloy Steel)
ASME B36.19 Stainless Steel Pipe
Three different terms are commonly used to define
the size of the pipe.
NPS
NB
DN

Pipe Size
B36.10 cover standard dimension of pipe in the
range of 1/8 to 80
B36.19 cover standard dimension of pipe in the
range of 1/8 to 30

Pipe length
Single random
4.8 m to 6.7 m with 5% of lengths 3.7 to 4.8 m
Double random
minimum average of 10.7 m and a minimum
length of 4.8 m with 5 % 4.8 m to 10.7 m
Fixed length as per purchase order

Pipe Thickness
Thickness are expressed in Schedule number (5,
10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160)
Also in STD, extra strong-XS, double extra
strong-XXS
Higher the schedule higher the thickness

Pipe Thickness
What is Schedule No?
A schedule number is an approximate value of
the equation = 1000 P/S
P is the service pressure in (psi)
S is the allowable stress in (psi)

Pipe Thickness
The outside diameter of each pipe size is
standardized. Therefore, inside diameter
depends on the schedule number of pipe
ASME B36.10 provides standard dimension
requirements for Welded & Seamless wrought
iron pipes.

Pipe Thickness for Stainless Steel

Thickness is expressed in Schedule number (5S,
10S, 40S, 80S)
Schedule no with S suffix is as per ASME B36.19
and primarily intended to use with stainless
steel pipe. ?sub_confirmation=1
