Many Categories of Good Writing

In this era, there are so many products of writing whether in the form of printed text
or they are just shared on the internet. Moreover, people nowadays are more interest to
express their feeling or ideas through writing rather than speaking. With the ease of
technology, the term of writing is not only mean that we have to write our ideas in a piece of
paper but now we can type it in our electronic device such as laptop, netbook, tab, or
smartphone and then share it to the internet. However, not all of the writing products can be
classified as good writing. Some of them ignore about the elements of good writing. It is not
hard to tell whether a piece of writing is good or bad because we just have to read it then
analyze it. Therefore, a good writing should belong to one of these four categories: authentic,
memorable, coherent, grammatical and precise.
A writing product can be called as the authentic one if it is made in the origin way or
in a way that resembles an original. We can decide whether it is authentic or not by how
original the writing seems. We can say that it is original when we have not seen such a
writing before. It means that it is not a kind of plagiarism. If we find that the writing is just a
copy from another writer, then we cannot say that it is an authentic work. The best writing
carries some of the personality and individuality of the author. Usually, when we are reading
something by one of our favorite writers, we feel that no one else could write in the same
taste with that, so it indicates that the writing is the authentic one. Sometimes, we can see the
authenticity of a writing product by looking at the writers field, work or education
background. If the writing topic is out of the writers field, then it must be hard for them to
write the information about that and they may just copy others ideas.

The next category of a good writing is memorable. Sometimes, when we read a

writing product, we forget the words and phrases that were written there. It is actually
indicates that it is not a kind of good writing. We can say that the writing belongs to a good
one if we remember some words long after we have finished it. Actually it is almost
impossible for us to remember all the words in a text or a book but there should be some
interesting or unusual words or sentences that we found there. When a writing product
contains of some unique elements, the readers will be easier to remember the content. So,
when we want to write a memorable writing, we have to enrich our vocabularies and pay
attention to the word choices.
The third category is coherent writing. A piece of writing is called coherent when the
sentence and the ideas hold together. The movement from one sentence to the next sentence
should be logical and smooth. There should be no sudden jumps or a sentence that is out of
topic. Each sentence must flow smoothly from one to the next one so the readers can follow
the main ideas more easily. There should be some transitional words and phrases because it is
used to maintain the flow and coherence of a paragraph. It is also used to connect the
sentences. In addition, the repetition of a key words are also important to keep the readers
focused on the topic. We can use pronouns to replace the key nouns to avoid being too
repetitive.
The fourth category of a good writing is grammatical. A good writing should be well
formed according to the rules of grammar. It should have correct grammar to ensure that it
can be comprehended and enjoyable to read. However, grammatical errors can come in many
forms and they will make the reader confuse to gain the meaning or the writers ideas. The
common errors usually related to the sentence structure, subject and verb agreement or
concord, punctuation, spelling, and other basic parts of speech. In addition, the incorrect
grammar or a simple punctuation can affect the meaning of an intended message. Even just if
we misplaced comma in our sentence, it can completely change the meaning of a sentence.
For example: Lets eat mom! vs. Lets eat, mom! They have totally different meaning.
The last category is precise writing. Precise writing means that a piece of writing
should be made clearly but compact. We have to write all the ideas in details way, however,
we should make it simple to make the reader understand easily. It is not necessary for us to
use the useless and ambiguous words or sentence. We just have to write the things which are
related to the main topic. We should not inflate our language. Each sentence should be

meaningful and support the main topic. So, we have to be able to select or classify whether
the things are necessary for our writing or not.
In brief, it can be concluded that a good writing are divided into these five categories:
authentic, memorable, coherent, grammatical and precise. When we want to make a piece of
writing, we have to pay attention on the originality, word choices, fluency, grammatical rules
and the necessary of supporting the main topic. It must be hard for us to make a writing
product that follows all of the rules above, but at least we have to try to include all of them
together.
