ANSWER ANY FOUR QUESTIONS

ALL QUESTIONS CARRY EQUAL MARKS
Assume suitably any data that is missing
Q1)

A beam ABC consists of spans AB and BC of lengths 4 m and 3 m respectively. The end A is a
hinged support while the supports at B and C are rollers. The span AB carries a uniformly
distributed load of 24 kN/m while the span BC carries a point load of 90 kN at midspan.
Analyse the beam by strain energy method and draw the BMD. The EI is same for both the
spans.

Q2)
Analyse the portal frame ABCD by strain energy method and draw the BMD. Columns AB
and DC are 5 m long and beam BC is 6 m long. Beam BC is subjected to a central point load of 100
kN. The EI is constant throughout the frame. The supports at A and D are hinged supports.
Q3) Four point loads 8kN, 15kN, 15kN and 10kN have centre to centre spacing of 2m between them.
These set of loads move over a girder of 24m span from left to right with 10kN leading. Calculate
the maximum bending moment at 8m from the left support.
Q4) A train of 5 wheel loads crosses a simply supported beam of span 24m. The loads and
their distances are as follows.

Calculate the maximum positive and negative shear force values at the centre of the span.
Q5) Analyse the portal frame by Moment Distribution method.

Q6) A portal frame ABCD has its column AB 6m long and inclined at 70 to the horizontal.
Beam BC is 4m long and horizontal and is subjected to a point load of 8 kN at 1 m from the

end B. Column DC is 4 m long and vertical. Supports at A and D are fixed supports and EI is
constant for the entire frame. Analyse the portal frame by Moment Distribution method.
