Important User
Information
Solid-state equipment has operational characteristics differing from those of electromechanical equipment. Safety Guidelines for the Application, Installation and
Maintenance of Solid-State Controls (Publication SGI-1.1 available from your local
Rockwell Automation sales office or online at http://literature.rockwellautomation.com)
describes some important differences between solid-state equipment and hard-wired
electromechanical devices. Because of this difference, and also because of the wide variety of
uses for solid-state equipment, all persons responsible for applying this equipment must
satisfy themselves that each intended application of this equipment is acceptable.
In no event will Rockwell Automation, Inc. be responsible or liable for any indirect or
consequential damages resulting from the use or application of this equipment.
The examples and diagrams in this manual are included solely for illustrative purposes.
Because of the many variables and requirements associated with any particular installation,
Rockwell Automation, Inc. cannot assume responsibility or liability for actual use, based on
the examples and diagrams.
No patent liability is assumed by Rockwell Automation, Inc. with respect to use of
information, circuits, equipment, or software described in this manual.
Reproduction of the contents of this manual, in whole or in part, without written
permission of Rockwell Automation, Inc. is prohibited.
Throughout this manual, when necessary we use notes to make you aware of safety
considerations.

Configurations
This chapter describes the configurations required to correctly set
up a Bulletin 857 relay and one of the two optional RTD scanner
modules available. There are different hardware and setup
configuration requirements depending on the model of the RTD
scanner used.
NOTE: Many newer PCs do not have a serial port. A suitable USB
to serial port converter should be used. Rockwell Automation
recommends the use of a Bulletin 9300-USBS USB to Serial Port
Adapter Kit.
For more information about communication between Bulletin 857
relay and a PC, refer to the user manual 857-UM001_-EN-P and the
software user manual 857-PM001_-EN-P.
To aid the user in setting the base relay for use with either the 857RAA or 857-RAD, this manual has been divided into specific
sections for the set up of either the 857-RAA or 857-RAD.
5-2
Configurations
857-RAA settings
If the 857-RAA RTD scanner module is connected to the Bulletin
857 relay by way of a single fiber optic cable interface module
(VCM RTD), there are no hardware settings required on the 857RAA RTD scanner module.
Once in this section, refer to the Extension Port area. Insure the
extension port protocol is set to External I/O. If it is not, click on
the text at the right side of the first line and a drop down list will
appear. Select External I/O from that list. (Figure 5.3)
NOTE: If a parameter is changed, in will be highlighted in red by
the SetPointPS Software. This is a visual indicator that a change has
been made and this data must be uploaded into the base relay. Once
saved to the relay, the relay may request a reboot (restart).

Within this section you must select the appropriate External I/O
Device. Click on the text at the right side of the first line and a drop
down list will appear. Select 857-RAA from that list. (Figure 5.5)
Next, insure the External I/O Protocol is set to RTDinput. If it is
not, click on the text at the right side of this line and a drop down
list will appear. Select RTDinput from that list. (Figure 5.5)
The External I/O Bit Rate should be set to 9600 bits per second
(bps) and the Data Parity is always Even.
Table 5.A shows the input settings that must be used for the 857-RAA
NOTE: If a parameter is changed, in will be highlighted in red by
the SetPointPS Software. This is a visual indicator that a change

In the External I/O Configuration, you will find RTD Inputs- Quick
Setup (Figure 5.6). This interface makes individual RTD channel setup
quick and simple.
You must follow the following steps for setting up each channel
you wish to use;
o Enable the channel by clicking on the appropriate location
under the AI Enabled area. Turn ON or OFF each
individual channel.
o Select the RTD type for each channel by clicking on the
appropriate location under the RTD Sensor Type area.
Select from; Pt100, Ni100, Ni120, Cu10 Other.. for each
individual channel.
o Select the RTD Function for each channel by clicking on
the appropriate location under the RTD Sensor Function
area. Select from; Off, WindingG, BearingG, Ambient,
Other.. for each individual channel.
o Select the RTD Alarm Limit for each channel by clicking
on the appropriate location under the RTD Alarm > area.
Key in the Celsius degrees for the Alarm level. Hit enter on
your keyboard.
o Select the RTD Trip Limit for each channel by clicking on
the appropriate location under the RTD Trip >> area. Key
in the Celsius degrees for the Trip level. Hit enter on your
keyboard.
Table 5.B shows the different setting that can be adjusted within the
RTD Input-Quick Setup field in SetPointPS
NOTE: If a parameter is changed, in will be highlighted in red by
the SetPointPS Software. This is a visual indicator that a change
has been made and this data must be uploaded into the base relay.

Troubleshooting
If an RTD sensor is disconnected (open circuited) a value of
-200C is returned for the respective sensor channel.
If an RTD sensor is short circuited, a value of
-250C is returned for the respective sensor channel.
The RTD measured temperatures can be displayed in the External
Analog Inputs screen.
If power is lost to the 857-RAA if or if communications between
the base relay and the 857-RAA are lost:
Each sensor channel displays a value of -250C
Timeout counter increases in the Protocol menu
If power is lost to the 857-RAD if or if communications between
the base relay and the 857-RAD is lost, when using Modbus RTUprotocol then:
Each sensor channel value freezes
AI error counter increases in the External analog inputs menu
Timeout counter increases in the Protocol menu
