Overview
General

The Allen-Bradley Bulletin 857-RAA and 857-RAD are both 12

channel RTD scanners. The 857-RAD enhanced scanner also
provides support for a PTC (thermistor) input along with four (4)
programmable 0-25 mA current input channels and four (4)
programmable 0-25 mA current output channels. Both the 857-RAA
and 857-RAD are connected to the Bulletin 857 relay via ST-type
glass fiber optic cables; the 857-RAA uses on fiber optic cable (only
TX) while the 857-RAD uses a dual fiber optic cable configuration
(TX and RX).
The RTD scanners can also be mounted remotely up to 2000m from
the base 857 relay.
This user manual will allow the end user to install, wire and program
the Bulletin 857 relay, via SetPointPS, all the required setting values
for either of these RTD scanners.

Configurations
This chapter describes the configurations required to correctly set
up a Bulletin 857 relay and one of the two optional RTD scanner
modules available. There are different hardware and setup
configuration requirements depending on the model of the RTD
scanner used.

Connecting Bulletin 857

relay to PC

Connect cable 857-VX003-3 to relays front panel (see Figure 5.1).

Figure 5.1 Connecting Cable 857-VX003/3 to the relays front port

For the external I/O settings of the relay

NOTE: Many newer PCs do not have a serial port. A suitable USB
to serial port converter should be used. Rockwell Automation
recommends the use of a Bulletin 9300-USBS USB to Serial Port
Adapter Kit.
For more information about communication between Bulletin 857
relay and a PC, refer to the user manual 857-UM001_-EN-P and the
software user manual 857-PM001_-EN-P.
To aid the user in setting the base relay for use with either the 857RAA or 857-RAD, this manual has been divided into specific
sections for the set up of either the 857-RAA or 857-RAD.

Protocol configuration for connecting the 857-RAA
In SetPointPS, go to the Protocol Configurationsection
(Figure 5.2).
NOTE: The unit Bulletin 857 must be equipped with suitable
optical interface module to receive data from the module.

Once in this section, refer to the Extension Port area. Insure the
extension port protocol is set to External I/O. If it is not, click on
the text at the right side of the first line and a drop down list will
appear. Select External I/O from that list. (Figure 5.3)
NOTE: If a parameter is changed, in will be highlighted in red by
the SetPointPS Software. This is a visual indicator that a change has
been made and this data must be uploaded into the base relay. Once
saved to the relay, the relay may request a reboot (restart).

External Analog Inputs for 857-RAD

The 857-RAD is equipped with four (4) individual isolated analog
inputs. If used, these inputs must be configured within the base relay for
proper operations.

within the quick setup screen. (Included in this list are the 12
channels associated with the RTD Inputs- you do not need to adjust
these if you have followed the Quick RTD Setup procedure above,
refer to Figure 5.16). This interface makes individual analog input
channel setup quick and simple.
You must follow the following steps for setting up each analog
input channel you wish to use;
NOTE: Some of the parameters are preset by the hardware

o

Enable the analog input channel by clicking on the

appropriate location under the AI Enabled area. Turn ON or

contact Rockwell Automation.
AI Offset is subtracted from Modbus value, before running
X/Y scaling. This is normally left at 0.
X1 and X2 are the minimum and maximum modbus values.
Y1 and Y2 are the minimum and maximum scaled
values.(see Figure 5.15)
The main purpose for these scaling factors is to shift the
measured values decimal point to either left or right so that
accuracy of the measurement is decreased or increased
respectively. This is done when the relationship between the
parameters are in factors of 10. Refer to 857-PM001_-EN-P

Configurations

External Analog Outputs for 857-RAD

The 857-RAD is equipped with four (4) individual isolated analog
outputs. If used, these outputs must be configured within the base relay
for proper operations.
Analog Output Settings
Find the External Analog Output within the menu of the relay with
SetPointPS programming tree (Figure 5.17).

Figure 5.17 Location of External Analog Outputs in SetPointPS Programming Tree

In the External Analog Output tab within the SetPointPS

programming tree, you will find all of the analog output settings
within the quick setup screen. There are 16 possible analog output
channels. Only the first four (4) are currently supported.
You must follow the following steps for setting up each analog
output channel you wish to use;
NOTE: Some of the parameters are preset by the hardware
configuration. Not all fields need to be changed.

Enable the analog output channel by clicking on the

appropriate location under the AO Enabled area. Turn ON
or OFF each individual channel.(These will be the first four
lines of the table. They are number 1 to 4 from the top)
Set the minimum value of current output required in the mA
Min column for each output channel.
Set the maximum value of current output required in the
mA Max column for each output channel. (Maximum value
is 20)

The user can define the relationship of each channel by

selecting the linkage to an analog value measured in the
relay. There are over 30 different selections provided in a
drop down box.
The Linked Val. Min setting allows for the scaling of the
minimum value of output current (in mA) to the linked
parameter.
The Linked Val. Max setting allows for the scaling of the
maximum value of output current (in mA) to the linked
parameter.
AO Slave Address should match the hardware selection
made on the dip switch on the side of the 857-RAD module.
The AO Modbus Address is set for each channel in
accordance to the associated modbus registers values.
(Refer to Table 5.F).
The AO Register Type should always be set to HoldingR.
Address.
The Modbus Min setting is the maximum modbus register
value. The modbus Min = mA Min value X 1000.
The Modbus Max setting is the maximum modbus register
value. It is typically the same value as the mA Min value.
The modbus Max = mA Max X 1000.

Allows scaling of the mA Output parameter

Allows scaling of the mA Output parameter.
Value must match the hardware Address as defined by the
switches on the 857-RAD
Although there are 16 locations available only 4 can be
assigned (857-RAD). Addresses are by default numbered from
1 to 16. However the address value must be set according to
the modbus registers values, meaning that:
mA Output 1 Ao Modbus 318
According to the Modbus Protocol a Holding Register is a 16-bit
word register which can be read or written.
Typical values;
mA Min = 0 is equal to a Modbus Min = 0
The relationship between these two parameters is 1:1000

Typical values;
mA Max = 20 is equal to a Modbus Max = 20000
The relationship between these two parameters is 1:1000
It increments itself if either AO Slave Address or Ao Register
Address are not set correctly

Troubleshooting
If an RTD sensor is disconnected (open circuited) a value of
-200C is returned for the respective sensor channel.
If an RTD sensor is short circuited, a value of
-250C is returned for the respective sensor channel.
The RTD measured temperatures can be displayed in the External
Analog Inputs screen.
If power is lost to the 857-RAA if or if communications between
the base relay and the 857-RAA are lost:
Each sensor channel displays a value of -250C
Timeout counter increases in the Protocol menu
If power is lost to the 857-RAD if or if communications between
the base relay and the 857-RAD is lost, when using Modbus RTUprotocol then:
Each sensor channel value freezes
AI error counter increases in the External analog inputs menu
Timeout counter increases in the Protocol menu

857-UM002A-EN-P July 2011

If the application uses Remote or Extension-communication port, an alarm can be

generated using relay logic, for e.g. inverted Remote.comm signal can be used to drive an
LED indicator on the front of the relay.
