ACADEMIC STAFF APPOINTMENTS

SeniorLecturer/Lecturer

While the School of Engineering conducts formal advertising recruitment campaigns from time to time,
the School would be interested to hear at any time from suitably qualified persons interested in full-time
appointment as academic staff to contribute to our programs.

The School of Engineering continues to grow rapidly, particularly in the delivery of undergraduate
programs and the expansion of its facilities. Currently there are some 42 academic staff within the School,
supported by administrative and technical staff, catering for about 1000 UG and HDR students.

There has also been significant expansion of industry collaborative research activities, and offering of the
higher degrees by research, the Master of Engineering Science (MEngSc), and the Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD). Expansion of research activity on the Malaysian campus is a high priority for the University, and
all staff are expected to contribute in this area.

The academic positions are being offered to the best available candidates, at a level commensurate with
their qualifications, teaching experience, and level of research activity, in accordance with the University
classification standards (details provided below). A strong industry background, especially in research
and development, is also valued.

Duties at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level will include the teaching of typically one or two subjects per
semester, possibly team-taught, as well as a strong emphasis on research activities. The ideal applicant
will have completed a PhD degree from a well-recognized university, in the relevant subject area, and
have had proven professional, teaching and research experience. An established record of funded research
and relevant publications would be a distinct advantage. However candidates who have recently
completed their higher degrees are also encouraged to apply.

The positions are generally available in the broad areas outlined below. Contribution to the development
of one or more advanced elective unit(s) in the chosen person's specific area of expertise could also be
expected:

Chemical Engineering [CHE]: Process Design, Transport Phenomena, Numerical Methods, Process
Control, Separation Processes, Heat and Mass Transfer, Reaction Engineering
Mechanical Engineering [MEC]: Engineering Design, Fluid Mechanics, Materials Engineering,
Renewable Energy System, Green Technology and Sustainable Design
Mechatronics Engineering [TRC]: Mechatronics & Manufacturing, Professional Practice, Artificial
Intelligence, Multi-robot systems, Industrial Automation
Electrical & Computer Systems Engineering [ECE]: semiconductor technology, solid state lighting
electronics, colour and image analysis, optical communication, wireless sensor networks,
microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
The appointments will be made under the terms and conditions that apply to staff at the Monash Malaysia

campus. Duties can commence as soon as possible.

LECTURER (Level B)

A Level B academic is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the university and to carry
out activities to maintain and develop her/his scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to
the profession or discipline. Specific duties required of a Level B academic may include:

conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions;

initiation and development of course material;

acting as subject coordinators;

the preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars;

supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students

engaged in course work;

supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects;

the conduct of research;

involvement in professional activity;

development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior
staff;

marking and assessment;

consultation with students;

a range of administrative functions the majority of which are connected with the subjects in
which the academic teaches; and attendance at departmental, school and/or faculty
meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.

A Level B academic shall have qualifications and/or experience recognised by the university as
appropriate for the relevant discipline area. In many cases a position at this level will require a doctoral
qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. In determining experience relative to qualifications,
regard shall be had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education,
creative achievement, professional contributions and/or contributions to technical achievement.

SENIOR LECTURER (Level C)

A Level C academic is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a department,
school, faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also
expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities. Specific duties
required of a Level C academic may include:

the conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field

excursions;

initiation and development of course material;

course coordination;

preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars;

supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects;

supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students

engaged in course work;

conduct of research;

significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team;

involvement in professional activity;

consultation with students;

broad administrative functions;

marking and assessment;

attendance at departmental, school and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or
committee work.
A Level C academic will normally have advanced qualifications and/or recognised significant experience
in the relevant discipline area. A position at this level will normally require a doctoral qualification or
equivalent accreditation and standing. In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard shall be
had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative
achievement, professional contributions and/or contributions to technical achievement. In addition, a
position at this level will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional
achievement in the relevant discipline area.
