Sheboygan County
wine country?

County is part of officially recognized

grape growing region
By Kevin Struck, University of
Wisconsin - Extension
In 2012, after a seven-year process, a 3,800 square mile region of
eastern Wisconsin was designated
by the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau as the
Wisconsin Ledge American Viticulture Area (AVA), joining well
known AVA regions such as Napa
Valley, Marthas Vineyard, Finger
Lakes, and Willamette Valley.
As the region approaches its
five-year anniversary, there are
now 19 wineries and at least that
many vineyards within Wisconsin Ledge. The most recent addition to the list is SoLu Winery
& Meadery in central Sheboygan
County. SoLus 25-acre vineyard
includes a varietal of 11 grapes.
Sheboygan County is also home
to Blind Horse Winery in Kohler.
An AVA recognizes the unique
qualities of a specific landscape
for its ability to grow quality
grapes for use in winemaking.
The establishment of a viticultural
area allows vintners to market a
brand that describes the origin of
their wines and helps consumers
identify wines they may wish to
purchase.
Ancient glaciers helped shaped
the unique landscape that is a key

factor in the suitability of Wisconsin Ledge for viticulture. The land

in eastern Wisconsin rises sharply
over the ridge-like Niagara Escarpment and then slopes gently
downward to the shores of Lake
Michigan, creating eastern-facing slopes. Most of the vineyards
are sited on these eastern-facing
slopes, since they benefit from
constant air movement off a large
waterbody that stores warmth
during the summer. The presence
of the large lake creates a vacuum during the growing season

that allows warm air over the

lake to rise, while sucking colder
air off the land. Since there is a
steady flow of relatively warmer
air, cold air is unable to settle over
the vineyards. Consequently, the
growing season near Sheboygan,
for example, averages 184 days
typically 56 days longer than in
the center of the state.
The glaciers played a role in
shaping the soils within Wisconsin Ledge as well. Glacial soils
consist of much more gravel and
sand, and less clay, than typical

non-glacial soils. An aquifer within limestone and dolomite bedrock beneath the AVA provides
mineral-rich groundwater to grape
vines, which encourages deep root
growth. This translates to unique
flavors and makes grape-growing
in this region different from anywhere else in the world, said
Steve DeBaker, winemaker and

owner of Trout Spring Winery,

in the October 30, 2011 issue of
Midwest Wine Press.
Wisconsin Ledge became the
third AVA in Wisconsin (California easily leads the nation with
122), and is the 12th largest in
the country. Wisconsin also ranks
16th in the number of wineries per
state.

Plans for 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling

Straits already underway
By The Kohler Villager
Plans are already underway
for the 2020 Ryder Cup, which
will be held at Whistling Straits
next time the United States hosts
the event. (The competition between teams from Europe and the
United States is held every two
years, with the venue alternating
between courses in the USA and
Europe).
This will be the first time the
Ryder Cup is held in Wisconsin,
and Whistling Straits will be the
first public course in the U.S. to
host this major event since 1991.
A contingent of approximately
70 Kohler Co. executives visited
the Ryder Cup held in early October at Hazeltine National Golf
Club in Chaska, Minnesota to get
a better idea of whats involved in
hosting the tournament.
According to media reports,
there were twice as many corporate chalets at the Ryder Cup
at Hazeltine (80) as there were
at the last PGA championship at
Whistling Straits (40). The crowd
in 2020 is expected to be at least
280,000 spectators or more (PGA
estimates were about 200,000).

There were 15 massive LED

screens installed throughout the
course, the most ever placed at a
golf tournament. One of the notable challenges at Hazeltine were
unruly spectators.
For those unfamiliar with the
game of golf, the Ryder Cup is a
different animal from other golf
tournaments like the PGA Cham-

pionship. Jointly administered

by the PGA of America and the
PGA European Tour, it has been
described as a golf tournament
like no other and the worlds great
sporting event. It has been called
golfs version of a professional
football or soccer game.
The Ryder Cup has its own
rules with a match-play format

that pits the best American golfers

against the best European golfers.
There is no prize money, and the
golfers are not just playing for
themselves, but for their country.
Spectators tend to be more raucous, and dress in flashy patriotic
costumes. There is usually a lot of

pressure and drama for the golfers, and sometimes controversy.

Combine all that with Whistling
Straits challenging terrain influenced by Irish links, and the 2020
Ryder Cup should make for some
interesting and exciting competition, right in our back yard!

Left: American spectators dressed as Statue of Liberty, bald eagle, and Uncle Sam. Right: Brits decked out in their national flag.

Kohler School Foundations

frequently asked questions
this time of year
1. What IS the Foundation?
The Kohler School Foundation
is a non-profit organization that
grants money to initiatives that
support the Kohler School Districts strategic priorities, provide
scholarships to graduating seniors, and take the district beyond
the basics of what the typical
public school budget allows. The
Kohler School Foundations funding is designated solely to support
the school district.
2. What is Fall Follies?
In its tenth year, Fall Follies is an
evening that brings together the
Districts supporters: community, staff, and corporate contributors. It celebrates both school
and community and is a great
opportunity to meet new neighbors, connect with others, or enjoy a night out without the kids!
The proceeds from this silent
and live auction fundraiser go
toward the Annual Fund, directly
impacting the next school year.
It will be held October 29 at the
American Club. The ballroom is
quickly filling. Please register at
www.bidpal.net/ksf2016 before

its too late!

3. How can I give if I cannot
attend Fall Follies?
The event has become a wonderful celebration known for fun and
camaraderie, but if youre unable
to attend, there are other ways to
give. You may:
Write a check for a tax-deductible donation to the Kohler
School Foundation and deliver
it the Foundations mail slot
at school or send to: Kohler
School Foundation, 333 Upper
Road, Kohler, WI 53044.
Donate online through www.
kohlerschoolfoundation.org
Bid on auction items online at
www.bidpal.net/ksf2016. The
Kohler School Foundations
Giving Center will go live for
online bidding on October 21.
You may bid on items from
miles away up through the evening of the event and you will
be notified if you have won an
item. There are a few special
items, however, that will only
be available at the event itself.
Donate an auction item for the
2017 Fall Follies.

Any way you contribute, it makes

a difference to the students and
faculty at Kohler Schools.
4. What do I wear to Fall
Follies? (Believe it or not, this
question gets asked often)!
Fall Follies is intended to be FUN
not stressful! It is a casual event
meant for comfortable conversation and, of course, dancing! That
said, with a different twist each
year, you will NOT be out of place
if you dress the part. Dont be
surprised with this years theme,
Rockin through the Decades if
you spot your favorite rock star or
encounter entire tables of guests
sporting the look of a great rock
era!
5. Who IS the Kohler School
Foundation?
YOU are. While the organization
is comprised of a Board of Directors and has a couple sub-committees, without the dedication and
support of you, the Foundation
would simply not exist.
Fall Follies 2016 is sure to be a
fantastic event. Come join the
Kohler School Foundation in celebrating.
