Reflection Journal on Safety and Health Issues.
In the 11th week of the seminar class, a forum style speech was conducted and the
main topic discussed in the forum was about safety and health issues among the UTM
students. There were 3 speakers invited for this speech, who were PM Dr. Firdausi Razali
(TDP & President of JKKP FKK), En. Hanan Mohd. Basri (SHO, Unit OSHE, UTM) and
En. Aziz Latif (Bahagian Penguatkuasa Unit OSHE, UTM). OSHE stands for Office of
Safety Health and Environment and this unit is responsible for anything that involves 514
Act related to Safety and Occupational Health 1994. Some of their major responsibilities
are doing auditing activities and safety and occupational health check from time to time
as well as carrying out awareness programmes on the safety and occupational health
among the UTM occupants.
Then, the seminar class was started with the speaker asking a question, which was
the role played by faculty in concerning about students safety and health. This question
was answered by Dr. Firadusi since he is the President of JKKP FKK. And what was
answered by Dr. Firadusi was about the surveillance system installed in faculty such as
the CCTV in some specific and strategic spots in order to improve the security around the
faculty and also the safety of students. Besides that, the safety in laboratory was also
concerned by the authorities because there are also a lot of safety equipments provided in
every laboratory to ensure the safety of student during the time they conduct experiment
in the laboratory. From the answer given by him, I know that the faculty authorities
emphasizes on the concept of 3S which are safety, security and sustainability.
After the explaination about the efforts of faculty authority in improving students
safety and security from Dr. Firadusi, the forum was continued with the opinion from Mr.
Hanan. Mr. Hanan had taught us about the definition of safety. According to Mr. Hanan,
safety actually means free from danger and safety is different with security. He also said

that each of us must play our own role to improve the level of safety around us. For
example, the workers must obey rule and employees must prepare good and safe working
environment for workers. The penalty and fines will be given if the employee did not
prepare well.
Then, Mr. Aziz also emerged to voice out his opinions about the safety issues in
UTM. He mentioned that the safety issues in UTM are arising due to the attitude of UTM
students which is irresponsible. For instance, there are a lot of UTM students drive
without license. Such phenomenon is a potential threat to other UTM students lives.
Therefore, to prevent any tragedy from happening, he said that the students must now
change their attitude. However, it is sad to mention that majority of students are still not
well prepared to face the issue and care about their own safety.
Moreover, Dr. Firadusi also introduced about PSJ to us. PSJ is actually Pusat
Tanggung Jawab. The most important objective of this department is to raise the
awareness of students about safety issue is indeed everyones responsibilities. Dr.
Firadusi also told that many of the students do not know the main reason to use the safety
equipment. Such situation can explain why there are still so many accidents happen
although much safety equipment had been prepared by authority.
One of the sentences said by Dr. Firadusi that really reminds me is that One
accident is too much for you, it may change the rest of your life. From this sentence, Dr.
Firadusi would like to advise all UTM students to take care about their own safety and
help to achieve zero danger in UTM. Besides, UTM students should also gain some
insight about the safety issue and understand their role as well.
Next, the forum was continued with the issues about how students can play their
role to avoid accident. This issue was discussed by Mr. Hanan. Firstly, he told that student
must have their own awareness to prevent accidents. They should also gain some new
knowledge about safety issue and become aware to detect the risk of any accident. Then,
students should uphold 4 principles when conducting experiment in laboratory which are
knowing the chemicals you use, understanding how to protect yourself and other,
knowing the safety equipment, and following the safety rules.

Before the forum come to the end, some methods on how to report about danger
elements were given. UTM students can straight away contact the safety department of
UTM. If students detect any risk in faculty, they can also report it to any lab assistant.
Students can also fill up the form to make complaint about any problems in the faculty.
Lastly, they can also report the problem to JKKP representative or MPP.
As a conclusion, the most important lesson that I learnt from this seminar class is
that all students should become more proactive in handling and preventing the safety
issue from happening. Although it seems to be impossible to achieve zero danger, we can
still minimize the danger if all the students could work together to combat the issue.
