1. What is the Padma Purana?

The Padma Purana is one of the eighteen major Puranas of Hinduism. It is named after
the lotus flower which Lord Vishnu carries and includes lessons that hold relevance
today as well. Here are some of those life lessons.

2. Keep the following in mind


According to the Padma Purana, if you keep these things in mind, then you will be happy
and acquire prosperity all your life.

3. Doing shraadh
According to the Padma Purana, those who do Shraadh of their deceased relatives will
always attain peace, calm and prosperity. So, always do a shraadh of your loved one.

4. Washing off your sins


Also, according to the Padma Purana, if a person goes and takes a dip in the holy waters
of the Ganga or any other holy tributary, then you will wash off all your sins.

5. Praying to the cow


The holy cow, known as Gau Mata also finds mention in the Padma Purana --- it is said
that praying to the Gau Mata will give you health, wealth and prosperity.

6. Keep these things


Not only this, keeping shaligram (fossilised shell), tulsi leaves and a shankh (sea shell)
together will give you prosperity, health and happiness.

7. Don't keep on the floor


The Padma Purana also says that keeping things such as a shivlinga, diamond, gold,
tulsi leaves, flower garlands, rudraksh mala, books and idols of God on the ground is
considered to be highly inauspicious.

8. A wife
According to the Padma Purana, a wife who does everything as her husband says and
loves him will attain moksha on part of her husband as well. Let us now talk a bit more
about the Padma Purana.

9. The five parts


The Padma Purana contains five parts- Srishtikhand, Bhumikhand, Swargkhand,
Patalkhand and Uttarkhand.

10. Srishtikhand
The Srishtikhand talks about metaphysical elements of nature through a conversation
between Bheeshma and the sage Pulastya.

11. Bhumikhand
The Bhumikhand has a description of the earth and also tell the tales of kings like Prithu,
Nahush, Yayati, Prabhriti and the sages like Shiva Varma, suvrata and Chyvan.

12. Swargakhand
The Swargakhand describes as to how the world came into being --- it talks about the
mountains, rivers and the people.

13. Patalkhand
The Patalkhand talks about the lives of Lord Rama and Krishna --- it talks about their
journey in life.

14. Uttarkhand
The Uttarakhand is a conversation about the beauty of life between Lord Shiva and his
wife Parvati.

15. The manuscripts


The manuscripts of Padma Purana exists in different versions and is said to contain
55,000 verses each.

16. The compilation


The compilation talks about cosmology, mythology, genealogy, geography, rivers and
seasons along with the temples and pilgrimages in India.

17. Jain text

Apart from this Padma Purana, another Jain text called Padma Purana exists that
includes a Jain version of the Ramayana.

18. Bengali version


Another version of the Padma Purana, traces back to Bengal region and contains five
khandas or chapters. However, this version has never been translated into any other
language.

19. Composition date


The exact date on which the Padma Purana was composed is still not known --however, estimates say that it was was around the 4th and 15th century.

20. Widely read


The Padma Purana has been widely read all across the country and includes valuable
life-lessons. It is said that reading the Padma Purana regularly will solve all your life
problems.
