Square-eyed teens!
Izolation
Constantly staring at a screen with earbuds in keeps you cut off from the
people in the immediate, physical world around you. This unwillingness or
even inability to connect to real people in front of you leads to isolation, a
recurring issue for people who cant disconnect from their technology.
Relationships can certainly form and grow online, but electronic
communication is a far cry from real human companionship.
Addiction
Teens are becoming addicted to technology, making them isolated from the
real world. . According to a recent survey more than half of teenagers prefer
to spend most of their time in their bedrooms, because that is where their
favourite gadgets are
Lack of Social Skills
The use of online social media outlets causes teens to meet face-to-face with
much less frequency resulting in a lack of much needed social skills. Most of
teens have lost the ability to read body language and social cues in other
people.
Bad results at school
Even in school, teens are texting during class distracting them from the
teachers lecture. Not only are teens not paying attentions during class; they
are also taking the text language into their real writing assignments. 38%
of teens say that they have used text shortcuts in schoolwork such as LOL
(which stands for laugh out loud) . The teen texting language is limiting
teens vocabulary and written communication skills. Also, the ringtones often
interrupt the lesson.
Obesity
The more time people are spending engrossed in video games, talking to
friends online and watching funny cat videos on YouTube, they are spending
less time being active or exercising. So, most of teens suffer from obesity
and other illnesses that are related to it.
Technology Can Put Privacy and Safety at Risk
Improper use of technology can expose a child to numerous
risks. Teens who use technology may unwittingly share information that can
put them in danger. In 82% of online sex crimes against children, the sex
offenders used social networking sites to get information about the victims
preferences. And the anonymity of technology can also make it easier for
people to bully others online. A quarter of teenagers say they have been
bullied either by text or on the Internet.
Increased Bullying
The use of technology has caused an increase in bullying and escalated the
degree of severity. Kids are no longer able to escape their tormentors once
they reach the safety of their own homes. Bullies infiltrate the security of
their victims homes through online avenues. It is also easier to get more
kids involved in bullying because people are more likely to say things online
that they wouldnt say in person. The increase in cyber-bullying has also led
to an increase in teen suicides.
Bad sleeping habits
One of the most noticeable things technology has done is disturb our
sleeping habits. We stay up late, mesmerized by the screens and the
personalities on the other sides of them. Its easy to stay awake when theres
just one more text to send, just one more link to click, just one more funny
video to find. The end result is bad sleep made even worse by the ways
these screens alter our brains production of melatonin, the sleep hormone,
in an unhelpful way.
Loss of Hearing and Eyesight
Using headphones and ear buds can cause people to lose their hearing over
time. Likewise, straining your eyes looking at computer and device screens
can cause people to need glasses much earlier in life.
Neck and Head Pain
Constantly looking down at devices can cause neck pain and over time will
cause the neck to lose its natural curve. Eye Strain can also cause
headaches, blurred vision and migraines
Get on touch
Do you know how long its been
Since your last post showed up on the screen?
We miss your smiling avatar,
We wonder how and where you are.
Were waiting for you to get online,
Send us a message and well be fine.
Just type us a line or two
We only want to hear from you.
We go from one day to the next
Just waiting for a call or text.
An email or a wink from you
Will make us smile the whole day through.
When youre ready, well be here
Waiting for you to appear
Ill be as glad as I can be
When you sign in and chat with me
Talk to me
Talk to me, tell me
What happened today?
Ive been waiting to see you,
But youre miles away.
Your mobile is ringing
Youve got thing to do,
Then your laptop beeps
Theres a message for you.
Were in the same place now
Lets talk face to face now,
Just turn off your phone
Leave your laptop alone.
A real conversation
Is communication.
You just cant replace it
So wake up and face it.
Talk to me, see me
Look into my eyes.
Please stop multi-tasking
You must realise.
Its so frustrating
Cell phones, laptops, and television have revolutionized society. As a result of these technological innovations,
people spend more and more time plugged in, especially teenagers. According to Sciencedaily.com, most teenagers
spend an average of 20 hours per week in front of computer and television screens, and the numbers continue to
increase.
Technology has proved to benefit teens. The internet contains an enormous amount of information that can be useful
to all people. It has simplified tasks that would have taken much longer to do, like conducting research and sending
mail. There is also the advantage of being able to shop for items without ever leaving the house and communicating
with people in a matter of seconds. The internet has also become a valuable tool in education. Electronic libraries are
