Introduction
Personal Details
I am a 1st year Mechanical Engineering student at University of Southampton Malaysia
Campus. This internship was done during my summer break. It is my personal initiative and not
a part of the university requirement.

Why I choose Minconsult

From the myriad of companies opening their doors for intern, I choose Minconsult because of
their active involvement in the power plant sector locally and also internationally. They are
involved in 75% of the power plant in this country and the number continues to grow. Indeed, it
was a good decision to choose the biggest consultant company in Malaysia to get an in-depth
and thorough overview of the engineering and commissioning of power plant.

What I gained
Besides learning technical stuff about power plant, I was also exposure to the office
environment and situation help me to improve my interpersonal skill and become a better team
player. Acknowledging the real situation, now I have to admit that communication and team
spirit plays a vital part in our career in the office alongside the technical knowledge.
Though I did not have the opportunity to delve deep into a project, mainly due to my limited
knowledge and background in the subject, I managed to touch quite a few projects mainly the
Khulna Feasibility Studies, Kedah Coal Fired Power Plant and also Pulau Indah Combined
Cycle Power Plant.

Future Planning
I look forward to come back here and hope to be able to do more works alongside the
engineers.

ConclusionConclusion

Foreword
I would like to than my father for giving me the big help in landing this internship. I would have
been near impossible to get an internship spot as a 1st year student but it did not deter my spirit
to learn and discover. Keen on learning more about the power plant field, I decide to invest my
time during the 4 months summer break at the biggest consultant company in Malaysia,
Minconsult. It was one of the most beneficial investment I could have done as the experience
gained outweigh the time spent there.
Never the less, there are times where things are a bit tough but with the help of other engineers
and managers, I managed to muscle through the internship and achieve my goals. I received a
lot of help and assistance in solving and understanding key concept in a combined cycle power
plants and coal fired power plants.

Know the main parts of a power plant
Compressor
Combustor: pre-mix,
Gas turbine
HRSG
Steam turbine
Boiler
Learn their function
Learn how does a part is related to the next part
Learn the general process flow for a power plant

Pg. 4

ConclusionConclusion

Second month
Dig deeper into each part and learn the governing principle behind it
Know the individual small parts that make the big part. Example, turbine blade, stator
blades, lubricating system and many more that makes a single gas turbine
Learn the multiple designs available and their advantages as well as limitations e.g.
classes of GT
Identify the usage of each design for example jockey pump usage is different from a
centrifugal pump and so on
Learn the factors influencing the performance of the part
Learn the design parameters to be keep into consideration before choosing a suitable
model for a particular job e.g. NPSH, flow rate, power consumption etc.
Learn the others consideration needed to be satisfied before a power plant is made
Learn the importance of doing and environmental assessment test, geological study,
sociological impact, economical feasibility and so on
Steps taken before a plant can be approved from the proposal stage to feasibility
studies, approval from the authority, tender agreement and so on till the
commissioning
Learn the basic operation principle of a power plant for base or intermediate or peaking
load
How the varying load affect plant life time of a plant
Which plant type is suitable for each purpose considering the capital cost, operation
cost, build time and so on

Third month
Learn the operation and maintenance of power plant

Pg. 5

output of power plant
Learn about fouling and degradation plus how they affect the performance of power
plant
Understand the about on-line and off-line cleaning
Expose to the multiple fuels used as back-up
How these fuel affect performance of power plant
How to change from primary fuel to secondary fuel
Effect on emission when using the new fuel
Types of cooling systems in a turbine fin, coating and many more that can improve firing
temperature
Do an in-depth study of relation between cost and performance of a power plant
How much efficiency gained costs and how is it going to benefit in the long run
Study the operating cost of a power plant throughout its life time
Introduction of standards
Learn the many types of standards and usage
Methods to control emission levels like using FGD, SCR, ESP, fabric filter, water
injection and many more

Brainstorm on the design of jetty at Kedah Coal Fired Power Plant.

Prepare Slides for Engineers and Secretary

Help them prepare slides to for presentation to client and staff of the company.

Presentation to PPRE Staff

I learnt how to convey the information I learnt in a simple and easy to understand way.

Checking Government Limit and Regulations

Learn the amount of emission limit for different types of power plant and fuels.

Meetings Report
I have learnt how to handle a meeting in order to quickly resolve a work. Then I was tasked to
make a report from a meeting from a vendor.

Internal Audit
I helped to prepare the documents and files for auditing.

Conclusion
In short, I am very grateful for the chance given. Even if I am a 1 st year student and lacks a lot
of knowledge, the PPRE staff was supporting and cooperative. They helped me to get
understand the subject matter at hand and more. Although not given so much opportunity to do
engineering works and the like, I have to admit that my knowledge still needs to be improved
before I can get my hands into real jobs. It opened my horizon on the vast work surrounding
the consultancy field and help me make a sound decision for my future career.
