RESEARCH, ENGINEERING, MANUFACTURING, AND SUSTAINING (REMS)

Who are we?

Schlumberger is the worlds leading oileld services company supplying
technology, information solutions, and integrated project management
that optimize reservoir performance for customers working in the oil
and gas industry. Reecting our belief that diversity spurs creativity,
collaboration, and understanding of customers needs, we employ over
115,000 people of more than 140 nationalities working in 85 countries.
As the global demand for oil and gas continues to increase, so does
the demand for solutions-based technology. Our customers want to
know how to improve production from existing elds, how to access
unconventional sources of energy, and how to nd and produce
hydrocarbons in increasingly hostile environments. At Schlumberger,
we believe the answers will only be found by encouraging the best and
the brightest minds to push the limits of imagination. Inventing new
technologies is what we do.
Because our needs are so specialized, virtually everything we use in
the eld is created, developed, and manufactured by our own people.
The challenges they face are immense. Our solutions must perform
under exposure to extreme pressure, temperature, and environmental
conditions. In the Schlumberger Research, Engineering, Manufacturing,
and Sustaining (REMS) community, you will work with some of the very
best scientists and engineers in their elds. You will be immersed in a
world where innovation is expected. As a member of the REMS team,
your goal will be to become an expert in your own eld, recognized
and respected not just within Schlumberger but among your peers
worldwide.

I joined in 2001 after it became evident

that the challenges and opportunities for
Schlumberger in Russia were increasing
by unprecedented proportions. I began
work on the Natural Gas Theme Project,
coordinating the work of more than
20 experts to produce a study on the
technological, economic, and marketing
aspects of natural gas products and
services. This was quite an opportunity
for someone like me with little seniority.
In 2003 I moved to the new research
center in Moscow, where I am now
head of the Mathematics and Modeling
Department. Its interesting to be
surrounded by such a diverse and highly
educated team. It took me some time to
convince myself that being a manager in
research does not necessarily mean
I have to stop doing research. It just
needs to be done in a different way!

REMS

At Schlumberger, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with

scientic and engineering leaders from both the professional and
academic communities. You will join small teams dedicated to
projects ranging from initial research and discovery to nal delivery
of the manufactured solution to our operations in the eld.
REMS centers

Furthering its commitment to scientic leadership, Schlumberger fosters

26 technical communities for employees with similar interests. These
communities, ranging from chemistry to well engineering, include 124
special interest groups and over 28,000 employees worldwide.
The REMS career path is dened by a formal training and development
program during your rst 36 months with Schlumberger. Following this
period, you can choose to continue your career in research, management,
operations, marketing & sales, or technical areas. As part of the
technical path, the Schlumberger Eureka Technical Career (SETC)
initiative encourages you to advance your career at your own pace.
SETC provides proven technical contributors with recognition, reward,
and inuence, giving them the incentive and opportunities to build
careers without losing their technical focus.
If you possess a true sense of adventure, you may also qualify for our
Tech and Field Program. During the eld assignment portion of this
program, you will install, operate, and troubleshoot proprietary
equipment and solutions under real-world conditions. In a REMS center,
you will create, design, build, and deploy the best equipment and
solutions in the world. All this is within reach just three to ve years
after joining the company.

The most exciting thing about my career

in general is the variety of things Ive
been exposed to: everything from the
countries, cultures, people, job proles
and responsibilities to the different
Schlumberger technologies. There have
been lots of highs and many challenges but
rarely a dull moment.
One of my most memorable moments is
the rst eld test of a downhole sensor I had
developed the surface acquisition software
for. I followed the job in real time from my
PC. The thrill was equivalent to a skydive
tandem jump. Thankfully, everything went
smoothly.
Today I manage a team delivering
technical services from India to more
than 10 Schlumberger centers worldwide.
I interface with many different people
something I enjoy enormously even at its
most challenging. I also make presentations
to top managers visiting our center, and
together with my manager and peers
I help plan the future of our developing
center in Pune. The job is exciting and
extremely satisfying.

What is the

Tech and Field Program?

This Schlumberger program combines eld and REMS training and exposes you to various types of jobs;
its purpose is to help you nd the job that best ts your talents and goals.

Program participants are selected jointly by

recruiting teams from REMS and the eld
In Stage 1, participants are assigned to eld
locations all over the world, working as
Field Engineers for 15 to 18 months
In Stage 2, participants work in an REMS center
on one assignment that typically spans two to
three years

This job development process enables you to gain the priceless background of true eld experience, enhance your two-way communication
with the eld, and ensure higher quality of nal product.

Who are our candidates?

We recruit new hires and current REMS employees:

We prefer new hires that have Masters degrees or Postgraduate

degrees in Engineering or Earth Sciences.
REMS employees must have a minimum of 18 months seniority and
be willing to start as Field Engineer trainees in eld operations.

We need engineers and scientists who are able to work in almost

any environment anywhere in the world, delivering services to our
customers 24/7. Full mobility is required for your Stage 1 assignment
as a Field Engineer; you must be onsite wherever our clients need
youwhenever they need you. Mobility will remain an important
factor throughout your career, but it is not required for your Stage 2
assignment in an REMS center.

The Tech and Field Program exposed me to the realities

of the oileld business. I joined Schlumberger in 2001
and was assigned to the manufacturing department at
the technology center near Tokyo. But I wanted to
experience eld operations and understand more about
the business, so I applied to the program. It sent me to
Canada, where I enjoyed the life of a Field Engineer and
experienced different jobs. Today that experience forms
the backbone of every task I carry out.
After I completed the program, I was assigned to
the manufacturing department to establish a new tool
production facility technology center. I enjoyed the
challenges: We had to start from scratch, even
constructing the factory building and training people
in assembly. I enjoyed being involved at every step of
the process.
My next assignment was in the sustaining department
of the UK technology center. This was another set of new
challenges; I was responsible for design improvements to
one of our agship products. Leading a team of engineers
and investigating eld failure incidents was truly an eyeopening process. Im proud to have a technical role that
contributes to the growth of the drilling business.
