Acting on the Results of an Environmental Audit
ERM assisted a major railway corporation in Hong
Kong to develop an EMS based on an environmental
audit conducted a year before. ERM developed the
system in two stages: first a review of existing policies
and management systems to facilitate the development
of environmental objectives, corporate and divisional
manuals, and environmental awareness training;
second, a pilot EMS.

Introduction
Human Factors Engineering/Ergonomics is a scientific
discipline that focuses on designing the task to fit the user,
rather than forcing the user to fit the task. It is a discipline
that takes into the account the capabilities and limitations
of the end-users and provide design improvement
opportunities to the equipment, machines, interface and
work environment to enable the task to be executed in an
efficient manner and avoid retrofitting work in future.
Approach
Human Factor Engineering/ Ergonomics enhances the
design of the equipment, machine, interface and work
environment by involving the end-users. They are critical
to the successful incorporation of human factors
engineering/ergonomic principles into the design as they
will be the individuals who will use the work system.
Human factors engineering/ergonomics software is
utilized to assist the client to analyse the shortcomings of
the work design and find an alternative design that suits
the capability and capacity of the end-users.
Services
The human factors engineering/ergonomics services
offered by ERM include:
The Team
ERM has a team of highly qualified and experienced

How We Help
Our services help clients to:
Identify the Need
As a company, ERM has been at the forefront of
developing environmental standards and guidelines to
ensure environmentally-sound development worldwide.
We can therefore advise on the need to act and on the
suitability of different strategies available. Even where
legislation is not present, we can advise where it would be
suitable to mitigate consequences.
See the Whole Picture
With a global network of multi-disciplined environmental
technicians around the world, ERM makes sure that no
potential impacts go unnoticed. From air, noise, waste and
water to landscape, ecology and traffic, our expert teams
identify all the issues you need to be aware of. And as
environment increasingly comes to encompass the
health and socio-economic considerations, we draw on our
professional network to report on these impacts too.
Follow the Preferred Solution
Because the ERM service combines technical know-how
with engineering, planning and management expertise, we
not only recommend but also design and implement
mitigation solutions to impacts which need to be
addressed. Where necessary, we develop environmental
management plans to ensure good practices are
implemented during construction and operational phases.

smooth running of your development plans, contact your
local office.

Benefits
Clients have found that our approach delivers the
following benefits:
Increased productivity
The Team
ERM has a team of highly qualified and experienced
Occupational Safety and Health Professionals who have
extensive experience working with clients ranging from
chemical and pharmaceutical to manufacturing, rail and
construction industries.
Auditing
Central to our service provision is a robust but flexible
occupational health and safety audit, an interactive programme consisting of consultations, interviews with staff at
all levels and detailed site tours. Our approach is focused
on legislative, corporate compliance and international best
practice. We also assess future risks and liabilities.
Management Systems
A management system developed by ERM is usually
delivered in two phases: a gap analysis, followed by an
implementation programme. The gap analysis culminates
in the development of a tailored and realistic action plan
for improving current management practices.

ERM Approach
ERM's risk services help clients to integrate the assessment
and management of risk into their businesses. We help
them to identify risks posed to customers, communities,
employees and environment, put them in perspective, and
address them in a cost-effective, practical way. From
concept design development, to acquisitions, site selection,
and internal safety procedures, we can introduce a riskbased approach and make sure you have everything
covered.
ERM's approach is to use multi-disciplinary teams to cover
all the issues in an integrated way, so as to identify
opportunities for cost-effective solutions. In this way the
Safety Report helps achieve safety objectives while
optimising expenditure. ERM has a proven track record in
undertaking risk assessments and assisting in Safety
Report development in a wide range of industries.
ERM RISKPLOTTM
ERMs proprietary onshore risk assessment tool,
RISKPLOTTM is utilised for analysing and presenting risk
results from hazardous materials facilities such as
chemical plants, terminals, ports and transportation
routes.

Our Techniques
ERM use a combination of the following techniques to
develop scientific data on a sites environmental condition,
including:
geographic/elevations surveys
Groundwater and surface water sampling
Aquifer tests (pumping tests, injection test, tracer
studies, etc).
Groundwater and contaminant transport modelling
Risk Based Corrective Action (RBCA) Assessment
An understanding of human
health and environmental risk is
essential to developing a
remediation strategy and defining
remediation goals.
Risk Assessment
ERM is active in the field of risk assessment, and in the
development of integrated risk based solutions for
contaminated land in particular. We have experience in
both methodological development and in the application
of risk assessment to assist the management decision
process.
Implementation of Risk Assessment
Remediation
Since every problem is different, the answers must be
specific to the site, often applying a combination of
techniques. We provide practical, tailored options to suit
all situations. The work programme is then phased for
maximum client convenience.
