advent of globalization. These reasons are self-evident,
and require an urgent, well-conceived response. It is clear
that knowledge institutions must find a way to redress the
challenges being posed by the realignment of the
relationship between rural and urban communities
through fundamental / action research, of the sort that
can shape curricula and training programs that will
prepare the coming generations for the future.
It is in this contextual background that we need to
understand the pivotal role that IIHMR- Us School of
Rural Management is playing today.
The School of Rural Management produces and

disseminates knowledge for a rigorous and holistic
understanding of the issues and challenges
associated with development, and more specifically,
the needs and aspirations of Indias Rurban
population, as the prevailing discourse describes it.
The unique position of the School within IIHMRU, Indias premier health management research
university, allows it to draw upon a rich legacy of
interdisciplinary explorations into the different
dimensions of human wellbeing.
The SRM serves as a vibrant institutional space to
address the challenges facing the poor as they
negotiate the changing relationship between the
government, private sector, and civil society.
The SRMs primary objective is to generate
meaningful and sustainable livelihoods, to address
issues of social justice, and ultimately, work towards
the creation of a just society by energizing Indias

economy and society through cutting-edge research,
teaching, training, resource mobilization, skill
development, and ecologically sustainable
practices.
The SRM thus seeks to energize processes of
development and social empowerment by finding
solutions to the problems plaguing the most
marginalized sections of society.
Objectives of the Programme
To engage in cutting-edge research of the sort that

leads to the emergence of durable solutions to the
problems facing the development sector.
To develop teaching/training aimed at front-line

workers, especially at the grassroots levels, with a
view to providing professional personnel for
development intervention in rural areas.
To evolve experimental action programs and

strategies related to rural development which are
innovative and demonstrative of new areas of
practice/strategies/service delivery.
To use the latest technologies and innovations

in information and communication technology in
all of the SRMs engagements in research, teaching,
and training.
To document and circulate the SRMs research

findings on development initiatives and thereby
enhance the understanding of meaningful
development praxis.
To publish and disseminate books, monographs,

periodicals, papers and audio-visuals on subjects
related to development theory and practice, and to
do so in an interdisciplinary manner.
To facilitate the sharing of experiences and lessons learnt
between key stakeholders in the development sector, by

Village stay - Students will spend time on learning
about the ground realities of rural life, the changing
charater of the rural economy & culture and will use
their time in the village to document these
experiences.
Summer Training
Each student works with an organization, on a project for
a period of a minimum of eight weeks at the end of the
first year. The objective is to allow students an intense dayto-day interaction with organizations. Summer Training
provides exposure to the student in working of an
organization in the real time. It also helps students to
develop managerial skills and competencies, and facilitates
an informed career choice by the students. At the end of
summer training, they will be assessed on the basis of their
performance during the period by way of report and
poster presentation.

Dissertation and Internship
Each student is required to submit a dissertation involving
personal research in his/her area of interest. The
dissertation includes a critical review of literature
pertaining to the specific area of interest, data collection
and analysis on the selected problem besides other
components of the dissertation. The dissertation must be
completed in the second year to qualify for the award of
degree of MBA.
