What is Transportation Engineering?

A branch of the engineering field that deals

with planning, design, and operation of
various transportation systems and their
components to achieve a safe, efficient,
convenient and economical movement of
persons and goods

Modes of Transportation

Highway
Railway
Water
Airway
Pipeline

10

Characteristics of Highway Transport

Physical possibility of providing a door to

door facility
Essential for feeder purposes for rail, water
and air transports
Practicable for the individual to own and
drive his/her own personal conveyance
Most suitable for short and medium distance
traffic
Subject to delays through traffic congestion,
hence travel times may become unreliable

11

Classification of Road

Expressway
Trunk Road
Primary Distributor
District Distributor
Local Road
Walkways
Toll and Toll-Free

12

Hong Kong Road Network Facts

In December 2015, there were over 728,000

vehicles on 2,101 km of roads
442 km on Hong Kong Island, 466 km in Kowloon,
and 1,193 km in the New Territories

There are 15 major road tunnels, 1,335
