Nonprofit fosters a new beginning for horses

Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue has saved 109 horses and remains the only horse rescue in the county
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue has been rescuing New Jerseys state animal, the horse, from
slaughter for four years but became an official 501 3c non-profit
organization in 2014. Ensuring
quality care and treatment, the
service provides intervention, education and outreach to the community to promote public awareness for the cause.
Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue, which is made up of all volunteers and is based in Medford,
has saved 109 horses and remains
the only horse rescue in Burlington County. In educating the community, the organization hosts
events and activities in addition
to fostering an environment that
teaches patience and kindness
and creates a sense of moral and
social well-being. Its most recent
event was held on Tuesday, Oct. 18
and raised funds for additional
fencing so that the organization
can expand and take in more animals.
We teach kindness and patience through gentle horsemanship. We dont yell or use discipline with our horses, and they
only get trained with praise,
Darlene Supnick, president of the
organization and owner of the
farm it operates on, said. Also,

most of the time if we ride, we
use bit-less riding so no horses
will have bits in theirs mouths
Many people are unaware of
the prevalence of horse slaughter,
animal abuse and neglect
throughout the nation. According
to The Horse Fund, U.S. Depart-

ment of Agriculture statistics

show more than 92 percent of
horses slaughtered are in good
condition and able to live productive lives. For this reason, the organization is always trying to
raise funds to rescue horses that
are standing in kill pens.

Normally, we have a big Facebook network of the rescues, and

watch for people posting about
horses ready to be shipped to a
kill shelter, Supnick said. We
also check out the Cranbury Sale
Stable and Horse and Tack Auction in Cranbury, and every once

in awhile someone who has a

horse dies or someone just cant
afford to keep their horse and we
intercept them.
For the organization, the easiest part of rescuing these horses
is initially paying their slaughter
price to the kill broker, a person
who buys horses either with the
intent to sell them to a slaughterhouse or who acts as a middleman for slaughterhouses. Then,
once the horses are pulled off the
kill pens, it costs the organization
on average about $700 in the first
30 days.
Despite costs and in an attempt
to provide comprehensive services after a rescue, Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue also aids the
equine by providing transportation, holding facilities and humane and quality care for the
abused, abandoned and neglected
horses as well as other animals,
including a blind rooster, crippled
goat and an old donkey.
We give them good food, the
best grain, the best hay, veterinarians for shots, we have their feet
and teeth done and more, Supnick said. Weve saved over 100
horses and follow up with each
contract. If someone cant keep
up with their horse, the contract
says that they have to give them
back to us. We also visit all the

Medford Leas programs

to focus on local dining
Wine and dine on the thought
of fresh, local foods and beverages at two lectures being offered
by Medford Leas this fall.
Benefits of Eating Local Foods
at the Vincentown Diner and
Wines in the Garden State: Past,
Present, and Future, will offer a
look at the local options available
when dining and drinking. The
programs will be held in Medford
Leas Medford Campus Theater
and are being offered at no cost.
The Vincentown Diner program
will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25,
and the Wines program will be
held on Tuesday, Nov. 15, both
from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Although utilizing local foods
is a trend that has grown in popularity recently, the Vincentown
Diner switched to local and seasonal foods more than a decade
ago under the ownership of Jim
Melissaratos because, as he ex-

plained, it made good business

sense and supports the local economy.
The Vincentown Diner is
proud to not only support the
local economy, but to work to
build community by educating
our customers as to where the
food comes from thus connecting diners to the folks who grow
and prepare these items for final
consumption, said Melissaratos,
who will be joined by Vincentown
Diner staff in delivering a lecture
at Medford Leas.
John Cifelli, general manager
of Unionville Vineyards, and a 15year food, beverage, and hospitality professional, will lead the second program on local wine.

oting is one of the inalienable

rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important inalienable rights that we have as Americans, if not the most important inalienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for independence in the 1700s based on the rallying cry of no taxation without representation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representation.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:
The Fifteenth Amendment to the

white males;
The Nineteenth Amendment gave
women the right to vote;
And The Voting Rights Act of 1965
prevented discrimination in voting.
A lot of time and effort were spent,
and blood was shed, to give all citizens
of the United States 18 years of age
and older the right to vote.
And now, it is up to you to take advantage of that right at the polls. The
General Election will be held Tuesday,
Nov. 8, and in addition to a contentious

and heated presidential election, there

are plenty of important local elections
on the ticket as well.
In upcoming issues of The Sun, you
will find information on exactly what
you are voting for at the polls, when
the polls are open and details on every
polling location in town.
If you have further questions about
the election, you can always find information on the countys website or call
your local clerk.
Whatever your political slant or
whomever you may be voting for,
make sure you make your way to the
polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Many people
before us fought for your inalienable
right to do so. It is our responsibility
to exercise that right.

Pumpkin decorating contest held through Oct. 27

By MARGARET LAFFERTY
Medford Library Association
There are so many wonderful things
going on at the Pinelands Library that I
need to jump right in and spill the beans.
The October reading raffles are now on
display, along with a new game for children. The adult basket is full of books,
note pads and a day planner as you prepare
your calendar for next year. There is even a
$25 gift card to Dilisi Pizza for your
munchies as you fill in those important
dates. The child friendly basket is definitely Halloween themed with a pumpkin basket and tons of candy. Speaking of candy,
how many candy corns can you find hiding
in the childrens section?
There is still time to enter our Pumpkin
Decorating Contest for kids of all ages.
Prizes will be awarded in four age groups,

including adults. Decorate your pumpkin

as your favorite character from a book and
bring it into the library where it will be on
display. The contest runs until Thursday,
Oct. 27. Winners will be announced on Friday, Oct. 28.
There is a weeklong Mystery Scavenger
Hunt at the library from Monday, Oct. 24
through the Monday, Oct. 31. Celebrate the
Big Read by doing some detective work to
solve this clue-themed scavenger hunt and
find out whodunit. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the
Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
As far as movies go, our Halloween special will be a Vincent Price movie
marathon on Monday, Oct. 31. From noon
until closing, enjoy thrills and chills with
movies starring one of the masters of the
horror genre. As Price once said, It is as
much fun to scare as to be scared. For

those of you looking for our Family Movie

Night, it will be on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
with The Jungle Book.
There are so many other activities available that I will only mention them here:
fourth and fifth grade book club, Skull and
Bones Detective, and Full STEAM Ahead.
For more information on these, contact the
Pinelands Library.
Until next time, keep turning those
pages! Or logging in!

Medford resident featured on Animal Planet's 'Life at Vet U'

MEDFORD
Continued from page 3
favorite channel as a kid, and
watching shows like Emergency
Vets, Victoria Stillwell's It's Me or
the Dog and Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter influenced my life,
Gallagher said.
Additionally featuring many
four-legged patients and their
owners as the stars, this series
began filming in February and

followed a half-dozen fourth-year

veterinary students, all of whom
have since graduated, on their
rounds through May at Penn's
Ryan Hospital in West Philadelphia and its New Bolton Center
hospital in Kennett Square in
Chester County. The show premiered on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 10
p.m.
I got to watch the first episode
at the premiere party at Penn Vet,
where I got to share the experience with my mom and sister and
many members of my Penn fami-

ly, said Gallagher, who reher

ceived
bachelors of
science degree
from Georgetown University in Washington,
D.C.
Through this
experience, I
GALLAGHER
gained a deeper understanding of myself. I was given an incredible opportunity to do a lot of
good, and I hope that I can keep
that ball rolling even after the last
episode has aired.
Although the cases she was
given and things she learned
while participating in the show
are now strongly ingrained in her
memory, participation also had
its challenges. While filming,
tasks such as putting on and taking off microphones, communicating with the producers and the
film crew about cases and doing
what she calls "on-the-fly interviews," where a student or a clinician is filmed talking about a

case, added to Gallaghers already

busy fourth year.
Getting used to what it's like
to film a show was a challenge in
the beginning, Gallagher said.
You have to be conscious of
things like labels on name brand
items that would have to be
blurred out, not hanging the
stethoscope around your neck
where it would hit the microphone and trying to verbalize
what you were doing or thinking
so that it would make sense to
people watching.
While she had previously been
unfamiliar with these particular
elements of film production, she
was familiar with the veterinary
work the feature entailed. Gallagher knew veterinary science
was her calling since she was on
undergrad studying biology with
the intention of working on conservation of wild species and
habitats. She admits that much of
her love of veterinary medicine
and companion animals stems
from a summer she volunteered
at a South Jersey animal shelter,
in combination with her time

spent in the rural farmland and

forest of Medford.
Growing up where I did in
Medford meant that for my entire
life I have been surrounded by animals cats and dogs, a few farm
animals at my house, my grandfather's beef cattle farm that I visited frequently and a wide variety
of wildlife species, she said.
Gallagher is working as a small
animal private practice intern at
Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in
Tinton Falls. A rotating business
internship, she spends much of
her time practicing medicine, but
also on business and management. It is the only internship of
its type, and there was only one
spot available, so she considers it
a great accomplishment.
I have a lot of goals, but they
can all be summed up into the
overarching goal of changing the
world, Gallagher said. I want to
pursue a specialty in veterinary
behavior and through that bring
more quality information to the
general public to help them better
understand and manage pet behavioral issues.

'Silent Witness Project' highlights victims of domestic violence

People who are in abusive relationships or are being harmed by
someone in their lives were encouraged to reach out for help
during a ceremony held on Friday, Oct. 7 that also remembered
Burlington County residents who
lost their lives to domestic violence.
The ceremony, known as The
Silent Witness Project, featured
several life-sized silhouettes that
represent citizens of Burlington
County who were killed by domestic violence. The event is held
in October as part of National Domestic
Violence
Awareness
Month.
The reason this annual event
is so important is because it lets
those who are caught up in the
cycle of domestic violence know
that they have a network of resources available to them and
that they are not in this fight
alone, said Burlington County
Sheriff Jean Stanfield, who
served as the master of cere-

monies.
Providence House, which provides comprehensive services for
victims of domestic abuse and
their children free of charge, was
joined in sponsoring the event by
the Burlington County Prosecutors Office, the Burlington County Sheriff s Office, Rowan College
at Burlington County, Soroptimist
of Burlington County and Servicios Latinos de Burlington County.
While we mourn and hold in
our hearts those who lost their
lives to violence this year, the
Silent Witness observance also
recommits us to working to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future, said Mary Pettrow, associate director of Providence House Domestic Violence
Services.
The event was held at Rowan
College at Burlington Countys
Mount Holly Center. RCBC officials felt honored to host the
event again this year, said RCBC

President Paul Drayton.

Rowan College at Burlington
County offers our support to victims of domestic violence. We
have a number of resources available for the college community
and encourage victims or witnesses of abusive relationships to
reach out to us, said Drayton.
We join with Silent Witness in
honoring those who have tragically lost their lives, and look forward to a day when domestic violence no longer exists.
The purpose of the ceremony
is not only to remember victims
of domestic violence, but to also
increase public awareness about
the problem, and to stress that assistance is available to those in
abusive relationships or situations.
We know that this issue affects all communities regardless
of color, race, age or culture,
said Angela Gonzalez, executive
director of Servicios Latinos of
Burlington County. During this

month of Hispanic Heritage and

Victim Awareness Month, we
would like to highlight the problem, and ask victims to break the
cycle, by coming out of the situation and looking for support before is too late.
The Silent Witness Project
traces its origin to Minnesota in
1990 when a group of artists created an exhibit of life-sized silhouettes, each representing a victim of domestic violence in their
state that had passed away due to
domestic violence. It has since become a collaborative effort to
honor victims lost due to acts of
domestic violence in communities throughout the nation.
There were 62,055 domestic violence offenses reported in New
Jersey in 2014, which is the most
recent year for which statistics
are available. That number represents a 4 percent decrease from
2013. Of those who were abused
in New Jersey in 2014, 42 died,
compared with 44 the previous

year. In Burlington County, there

were 3,450 domestic violence offenses reported during 2014, a decrease of 161 from 2013.
As the keynote speaker at the
event, Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi urged
people in abusive situations to
take advantage of available resources.
I want to emphasize that there
are programs in place to protect
you and your family members,
Bernardi said. Let me say that
again there are programs in
place to protect you and your family members, but only if you
come forward and let us help you.
These are not just words, this is a
pledge and a commitment to you
that is being offered by the people
who have dedicated their professional lives to protecting society
and helping those in need.
If you or someone you know is
being abused, call the Providence
House domestic violence hotline
at 18778717551.

A call to end gun violence

Special to The Sun

The fifth graders of St. Mary of the Lakes School visited and prayed for victims on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at
the Memorial to the Lost at the Medford Friends Meeting House. Memorial to the Lost is an assembly of
mounted shirts, each hand-inscribed with the name, age and death date of a local victim. The memorial is
an ongoing project of Heeding Gods Call to End Gun Violence, a Philadelphia-based movement.
