EXT. BILLY WILDERS BIRTH & FAMILY - DAY

Billy Wilder was born on June 22, 1906 in a small
town of Sucha Beskidzka, now known as modern day
Poland. He had a father named Max Wilder and a
mother named Eugenia Wilder. Later having an
older brother named William Lee who also became a
screenwriter, film producer and director.

INT. EARLY CHILDHOOD - DAY

The time growing up Billy spend most of his time
in Poland with his brother and parents. His
father and mother both owned a well-known cake
shop in their local train station in Sucha
Beskidzka. Failing to persuade Billy, he didnt
want to fulfill the family business.

The Wilder family later moved to Vienna, Austria
to finish his remaining time in high school,
which he states, one of the worst high schools
in Vienna. He later then attended the University

of Vienna to study law, midterm of his studies,


he a became a journalist.

He later wanted to pursue his career in writing
moving to Berlin. In Berlin he worked for a
newspaper company, he mostly wrote about crime
and sports. He was eventually offered a job at
the Berlin tabloid, developing an interest in
film.

EXT. TRAVELING TO PARIS & DIRECTING - DAY

In the late 1920s Wilder, a jewish screenwriter
in Berlin, was forced to move to Paris due to the
rise of the Nazi Party. Sadly, his mother,
grandmother and stepfather all perished in the
Holocaust.

He was able to travel to Paris, but

not for long, where he then pursued his joy for

directing. And from there, to Hollywood, making


his first major hit on the comedy Ninotchka,
helping co-write the screenplay. During his time
in Hollywood he had married his first wife,
Judith Coppicus and had twin boy named Vincent
and a girl named Victory. Sadly, Vincent later
died after birth Billy Wilder later then

re-married to an actress named Audrey Young. Who


starred in the movie Love Me or Leave Me.

Throughout his time in Hollywood he was able to
work with many directors and others in the
industry. Sharing ideas and building
relationships with fellow people. Throughout the
start of his journey he met a man named Fred
Zinnemann, who won four academy awards for
directing many genres including thriller,
western, and play production. He also met Robert
Siodmak who was best remembered as a thriller
specialist. Both who worked on the movie, People
on Sunday. Wilder later wrote a screenplay in
1931 for the novel, now film, Emil and the
Detectives, which included all three of his new
co-workers.

Billy Wilder was known for his directing and
screenwriting. He was able to express his ideas
through his writing. Wilder had a conservative
style, that often pushed the boundaries of
mainstream entertainment with tight plotting and

memorable dialogue. Billy Wilder enjoyed creating


films with purpose, he made films mainly
consisting of comedy but also added drama and
romance. When creating, a subject was chosen, he
then was able to visualize and find specific
artists. He believed no matter how talented the
actor was, there couldnt be any limitations on
how the actor could perform, bending the script
towards their personality was part of the result.

Billy Wilder was in the film industry for more
than fifty years and over sixty films as a
filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, artist, and
journalist. Hes had his all-time highs and lows
throughout his journey in the industry. Wilder
became the first person to win Academy Award as
producer, director, and screenwriter for the same
film, a satire comedy, known as The Apartment in
1960. Selling over $25 million at local drop
boxes. The film was also nominated for ten
Academy Awards and won five, including Best
Pictures, easily one of his best films. Wilder
also earned the Best Director and Best Screenplay
Academy Awards for the plot of the story The Lost
Weekend in 1945 about alcoholism. Wilder received
a total of twenty-one Academy Award nominations;

eight for Best Director, twelve for writing, and


one as the producer of Best Picture.

Throughout the end of his journey in the film
industry he decided to stay in Hollywood after
the fame, dying at the age of 96, on March 27,
2002 in Beverly Hills, California.

He was

awarded the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1986


for his lifetime contribution to film. He was
also awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial
Award in 88, National Medal of Arts in 93 and
has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Wilder
was known, not only for his films, but his
expensive modern art collection in Hollywood. You
could say Wilder had a rough start after many
tragedies and traveling done in Berlin, soon to
be a well-known, successful film director and
modern art collector. Wilder thoroughly living
the Hollywood life, surely enjoyed his passion
for film.
