Discipline Philosophy:
Beliefs about the Classroom Environment

One of the theorists of the researches I identify with is The Canters. I

believe that because I really agree with their idea of logical
consequences. In my classroom, I want my students to understand
that if they do something wrong they will receive a consequence and it
will be logical and have purpose. I really like the discipline hierarchy as
well. I plan on using one in my classroom for management of behavior
by using a clip system. By doing well on the discipline clip system, the
4

students will earn rewards. I think this will get behavior problems to a
minimum and make my classroom successful.
The second researcher I relate with is Ginott. I really like the
philosophy of using I-messages. I really want my students to be able
to speak about differences they have in the classroom in a positive and
non-aggressive way. I think its really important for the environment
of the classroom to be able to resolve problems and to resolve them in
a calm and peaceful way. I believe that by using I-messages my
students will be able to do that.

Letter of Introduction to Students:

To get my students excited about the new school year, I plan on
sending them a postcard in the mail. I plan on informing the students
of the grade they will be in, the room number, and my name on this
postcard.

Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Miss

Smith and I will be your teacher this year.
We have very exciting things in store for us
this year and I cant wait to see you in Room
201 in the Fall.
Have a great summer!

Letter of Preparation to Parents:

I got my idea for this letter from theeagerteacher.com
Dear Parent/Guardian,
My name is Caitlyn Smith and I will be your childs teacher this year. It
is my first year at Woodstock Elementary and my first year as a
Kindergarten teacher. I graduated from Ball State University in May of
2017 with my bachelors degree in Elementary Education. I have
concentrations in Mathematics and Gifted and Talented Education. I
grew up in Newburgh, IN and have lived here for 21 years.
In my classroom I have a clip system discipline plan. As your student
progresses throughout the day, they will move up or down on the clip
chart. Some days they wont move at all and that is okay too, it just
means they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Each day
the students move up on the clip chart they will get stickers for the
corresponding amount of times they moved. The stickers go on a
sticker chart that I will provide and once the chart is filled your student
6

is allowed to pick a prize out of the treasure chest. Some examples of

these prizes are erasers, pencils, and notepads - how fun!
I ask that you write down some questions you may have for me. I will
be able to answer any concerns or questions you have on the day of
your students orientation. If theres anything you would like to me to
know about your student, please feel free to share that with me as
well. I would ask that you bring with you two words that describe your
student to your students orientation. Please bring in any questions or
extra information into me on the day of your students orientation as
well.
I cant wait to see you and your student on August 12, 2018 for
Kindergarten orientation in Room 201!
Feel free to contact me at any time by email if you have any questions
or concerns.
Sincerely,
Miss Smith

First Day Bell Work Assignment:

For the first day I will have these two worksheets on every students desk so they can
have something to do while the whole class comes in. All I will ask the students to do is
color both and put their names on them, if they have trouble I will place stickers on their
desk with their name on them and have them place the stickers on the papers.

This worksheet came from

teacherspayteachers.com

This worksheet is to practice

identifying colors and will allow
me to assess where the
students are in terms of colors.

I found this worksheet at

www.mrsminersmonkeybusiness.com

If students finish the first worksheet,

this one will be given as a second
thing to work on.

All About Me Introduction:

For my introduction, I plan on showing a small slide show.

Classroom Procedures:
All of my procedures will be accompanied by pictures.
Arrival Procedure:
1. Enter the room quietly
2. Hang up coats/backpacks
3. Select your lunch
4. Turn in homework
5. Start Bell Ringer
Tardy Procedure:
1. Tell the students to schools tardy procedure.
2. Enter the room quietly.
3. Place your office slip in the tardy pass bin.
4. Begin working on homework. (Homework is placed on your
desk as if you are here, so there will be work to work on.)
Absence Procedure:
If a student is absent, the work from the day they missed will be placed
on their desk paper- clipped together until they return.
1. Put absent work away in absent folder
2. Begin todays work
Homework Procedure:
Students will keep homework inside a homework folder and turn this
folder in every morning into the homework tray.
1. Place homework folder in bin
2. Grab bell ringer
3. Go to your seat
If students do not have their homework:
1. Grab bell ringer (morning work)
2. Go to your seat.
Getting the Class Attention:
To get the class's attention I will use verbal attention getter.
Teacher: 1-2-3, eyes on me.
Students Response: 1-2 eyes on you.
Visitor in the Room:
I got this idea from the Classroom Management Book.
1. Introduce the Visitor to the class
2. Follow the agenda
3. Remind/reference the students what the objective is
10

4. Allow the visitor to have a copy of the classroom

procedures and rules.
Getting the Teachers Attention:
I got this idea from my classroom teacher at Grissom.
In my classroom I will use signals for students to get my attention.
1 finger - Drink
2 fingers - Tissue
3 fingers - Restroom
Restroom Procedure:
1. Pull down pants
2. Use restroom
3. Pull up pants
4. Flush the toilet
5. Wash hands
For a single student:
Students will hold up three fingers to signal that they need to use the
bathroom.
For whole class:
1. Line up at door.
2. Use restroom quietly.
3. Exit restroom and get in line.
Lining Up/Hallway Procedure:
The line leaders of the day will get in line first, then the other students
will be allowed to get in line behind them, depending on age, there
may be circles on the floor so students will have an assigned spot.
1. Line up quietly.
2. Face the front.
Dismissal Procedure:
1. Gather all homework
2. Tidy up desk and floor around you
3. Collect belongings from mailbox
4. Place belongings in backpack and put on coat
5. Car riders and bus riders line up
Bullying Pledge and/or Procedures:
I would like to post this bully pledge somewhere in my classroom then
have all of my students sign it.
I make a promise to treat others fairly, to stand up for those who are
in need of a friend, and to never be a bully to my fellow classmates.
Procedures For:
11

Target/Victim:
1. Share your feelings
2. Make a compromise
3. Get outside help if needed
Bystander:
1. Step in
2. Help make a compromise
3. Get outside help if needed
Bully:
1. Rethink your actions
2. Make a compromise
3. Apologize to target/victim

Discipline Plan/Classroom Rules:

I got these rules from www.pinterest.com
I got this discipline system idea from teacherspayteachers.com

My rules will be posted in the room. Since I plan on working with younger students, I will
make them, but if I got an older class, I would let the students help me make them.
These rules will have accompanying picture of what they mean.
1.
Listening Ears I will listen carefully.
2.

Helping Hands I will help others.

3.

Quiet Mouths I will talk quietly.

4.

Walking Feet I will walk.

5.

Raised Hands I will raise my hand when I need to share.

I will use a clip system in my class. The different stages of the clip chart will be (starting
with the bottom) parent contact, teachers choice, think about it, ready to learn, good
choices, great job, super student. Each stage will have a different corresponding color.
Each student will start on ready to learn everyday. At the end of the day, the student will
color in their weekly behavior chart with the color of the clip chart they are on and take
home for a parent/guardian signature so I know the parent/guardian has seen it.
*If a student harms or causes potential harm to another student they will be sent to the
office immediately.
The parents will receive a copy of the clip chart and what each color means. The
parents will also receive a coded chart for if their child receives a parent contact for that
day. The following are the codes:
1. I was talking in class
2. I was not following directions
3. I was disrespectful
4. I was hurtful to another student
5. I was not using my walking feet
6. I was disrespectful to another teacher

12

Rewards:
If the students move up on the chart, they get a sticker to place on their sticker chart. If
they move up two times, they get two stickers, if they move up three times, they get
three stickers. Each time the student fills up one chart, they get to pick a prize from the
treasure chest. Students will receive a new empty sticker chart after they complete one.
Example Rewards:
- Pencils
- Notebooks
- Erasers
- Pencil Toppers
- Pencil Grips
- Sit in the Teachers Chair
- Lunch with the Teacher

Letter to Parents:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
In my classroom I have a hierarchy system for discipline. Each day the students come
into they will be placed on ready to learn. Your students behavior dictates whether they
move up or down on this hierarchy. If the students move up on the scale, they get a
sticker that regards to how many times they have moved up on the hierarchy. Moving up
twice would mean the student would receive two stickers and so on.
Once your student has received enough stickers to fill a sticker chart, they can pick a
prize from the treasure chest. This will be various items from pencils to erasers. If there
is anything you do not want your student to have please notify me immediately.
I will be sending you home your own copy of the hierarchy to put on your fridge.
Throughout the week the students will record their own behavior that day on a behavior
sheet. The student will color in what they ended up on that day. The colors coordinate
with where they are on the hierarchy and this will also be on your copy. If they receive a
parent contact for the day, I will have a coded reason listed for what they were doing in
class that day. I will also give you a copy of this coded sheet.
Please feel comfortable talking with me about your student and their behavior. If you
have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.
Sincerely,
Miss Smith
