Conversion To Bridge Plug

The B expendable plug (product family no.
H65640) can be used to convert the SC-2 packer
to a temporary bridge plug, except 96-40 and 10760.
NOTE: B expendable plug, (product family H66540) is
limited to 7,500 psi.

Expendable Plug Installation

For complete information, refer to the units
from Baker Hughes on expendable plugs.
1. Remove bottom sub.
2. Remove brass shear screws and slide collet
support from inside collet.
3. Insert expendable plug (latch release end first)
through bottom end of collet.
4. Slide collet support into collet and install brass
shear screws.
5. Replace bottom sub.
NOTE: The expendable plug must be pushed out of
the packer bore before the packer can be retrieved
from the well. The retrieving tool can be used for this
purpose if the packer is to be retrieved at the same
time the plug is to be pushed out.

Operating Procedure
Setting on Tubing
When used in a one-trip gravel pack application, the SC-2 packer is run with the setting and
cross-over tool listed in the tubing setting compatibility and force analysis table. When setting the
SC-2 packer on tubing in standard applications,
the setting tool shown in the table is used with a hydro-set adapter kit.

Setting Procedure
1. Packers should be set as close to neutral
weight as possible. Maximum recommended
set-down weight is 2,000 lb for sizes 45-25 and
50-26, and 5,000 lb for larger sizes.
2. Raise pressure to P1 (refer to table footnote )
and hold for 5 minutes.
3. Bleed pressure to zero.
4. Raise pressure to P2 and hold for 5 minutes.
5. Bleed pressure to zero.
6. Establish neutral weight at the packer, if not already in this condition.
7. Raise pressure to P3 and hold for 15 minutes.
CAUTION!
P3 is a minimum pressure. If the ball seat
shears at a lower pressure, drop the backup
ball and pressure to P3 .
NOTE: In low bottomhole pressure wells, the
differential pressure between tubing hydrostatic
pressure and pressure below the packer will stress
the ball seat shear system. However, it will not
cause differential pressure and setting force in the
setting tool. In such situations, instances of early
ball seat shearing can be minimized between the
time the setting ball reaches the ball seat and the
time the setting procedure is completed. In severe
fluid loss situations, it may be advisable to drop the
backup ball without first using the primary ball.
However, in this instance, it is necessary to have a
system with positive control over fluid loss while in
the reverse circulation mode in order to be able to
reverse out the backup ball.

When using setting tools other than those listed, P1, P2, and P3 should be the pressures required to yield 60%, 80%, and 100% of the
minimum setting force required. Other than the compression recommended in step 1 in the operating procedures section, pressure alone
should be used to set the SC-2 packers. Do not exceed absolute maximum setting force for the packer.
* 55A2-26: use size 20 B-1 hydraulic setting tool and follow the size 40 setting pressure Specifications, or use size 40 HT hydraulic setting
tool as specified.
** Also 96-47 SC-2FT PZM packer.
50-26

20-26

8. Bleed pressure to zero. Pressure test and anchor test packer as necessary. The setting tool
should be released and pulled from the packer
at this point to prevent pressure surges to the
formation when the ball seat shears.
9. Slowly increase pressure to shear ball seat. Do
not exceed absolute maximum setting pressure
before releasing setting tool from packer.
CAUTION!
Exceeding absolute maximum setting pressure
with the setting tool still connected to the
packer may exceed limitations of the packer or
the casing in certain applications.

Setting on Electric Line

NOTE: It is recommended that the SC-2 packer be set
on tubing at temperatures below 175F.

Unit No. TU 5632

September 13, 2011

Rev. I

The SC-2 can be run and set on electric line

only under certain conditions using the B wireline adapter kit (product family H43809) and the E4 wireline pressure setting assembly (product
family H43702). Contact tech services and/or refer
to field bulletin ENG-HOU-004-01 for specific information.
NOTE: Any packer with a minimum setting force greater
than 50,000 lb cannot be set on electric line. The 86-40,
96-40, 96-47, 96-60, and 107-60 SC-2 packers cannot
be set on electric line.

CAUTION!
When setting the SC-2 packer with the E-4
pressure setting assembly, the slow set power
charge (product family no. H43766) must be
used.

The assembly, running and setting procedures

on electric line are essentially identical to those
used when running the D or DA retainer production packer. Refer to unit on B wireline adapter
kit for the wireline setting tools required to set the
SC-2 packer.

the packing element. The pickup shoulder on the

body then contacts the lower gage ring, picking up
the upper cone and slip cage and pulling the slips
off the lower cone. Finally, the upper end of the collet contacts the lower cone and picks up the bottom
of the packer.

NOTE: At no time should anything be run through the

SC-2 packer that has a square upfacing shoulder.
Pulling this back up through the packer could
inadvertently shear the collet support, thus releasing the
packer.

Should the packer have trouble moving up the

hole, release the retrieving tool by pulling a slight
upstrain and rotating fifteen [15] turns to the right.
This simultaneously releases the safety sub and
latch of the retrieving tool, allowing it to be pulled
from the packer.

Retrieving Instructions
The packer is retrieved with a S-1 retrieving
tool (product family H48853). Refer to the unit on
retrieving tool for the correct size.
CAUTION!
For proper retrieving operation, the S-1
retrieving tool must pass through and extend
below the packer. When running accessory
equipment on the packer, the ID immediately
below the packer must be able to accept the
retrieving tool. Refer to the unit on retrieving
tool for complete dimensional information.
Locate the retrieving tool in the packer with
10,000 lb set-down weight to ensure that the catch
sleeve and latch of the retrieving tool are in their
appropriate positions. Pick up 14,000- to
15,000-lb to engage the catch sleeve and shear
the collet support, allowing it to move up. Continued upward movement is transmitted to the collet
and packer body, causing the collet fingers to deflect inward and releasing the body and collet.
As the body moves upward, the shoulder on the
top sub picks up the setting sleeve and releases

The area above the packer should be thoroughly washed and the retrieving tool restabbed into the
packer. The entire pickup load is then transmitted
to the top of the packer. jarring can then be applied.
Once the packer is fully released, it should be
pulled slowly for the first few stands to give the
packing element an opportunity to decompress.
If the packer cannot be retrieved with the retrieving tool, the CJ milling tool (product family
H75706) with the correct shoe size may be run to
recover the packer.
NOTE: If the CJ milling tool is run into the well, an
attempt should be made to release the packer with the
CJ milling tool. If the packer does release when the
attempt is made with the CJ milling tool, the packer and
the gravel pack extension or other tailpipe may be
retrieved on the CJ milling tool. If normal releasing of
the packer cannot be carried out, the new SC-2 packer
may be milled up in approximately the same time as a
comparably sized permanent packer.
