To Administration:

Every year the Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA) recognizes exceptional library
media programs. The GLMA has a self-evaluation rubric that each school uses in order to
evaluate their program. The rubric includes the following categories: Student Achievement and
Instruction, Technology, Staffing, Facilities, Administrative support, and Staff development.
Each category is either basic, proficient, or exemplary. The Creek View Elementary Media
Center was evaluated using this rubric.
The overall evaluation of the Media Center was positive. The components in the Student
Achievement and Instruction category scored proficient or exemplary. The Library Media
Specialist creates lesson plans to support both the Georgia Performance Standards and the
Common Core Standards. The Library Media Specialist attends grade level meeting to offer
support and answer questions. She also uses the classroom curriculum and lessons to create
supporting lessons in the media center. The lessons are created to accommodate diverse learners
by combining video, audio, text, and hands on activities. The only basic score in this category
was the student assessment. The Media Specialist delivers lessons, but there is not an assessment
portion or an assessment plan. There is also little collaboration with the classroom teachers and
the Media Specialist. The Media Specialist is treated as a separate entity instead of a support
teacher. There should be continual classroom and media Specialist collaboration.
The components in Technology category scored exemplary. The Media Center supports
technology in multiple areas of the school. The Media Specialist is the coordinator for the
morning CNN video program. She coordinates the students (news anchors) and trains the
supporting students on the technology such as the camera, video, etc. The Media Specialist trains
all the students the online access program MacinVia. The Media Center website also includes
links to electronic resources, on-line research tools such as Galileo, and access to the on-line
library catalog including e-books.
The components in the Staffing category scored exemplary. There is one full time Media
Specialist and one full time Media Assistant. The components in the Facilities, Access, and
Resources category range from basic to exemplary. The facility and the book resources are
adequate for the student population. Each classroom has an interactive white board. Students and
staff have access to library resources outside of the school. The electronic databases, catalogs,
and resources are updated. Unfortunately the schedule is not flexible to support learning and
creativity. There are scheduled classes in the Media Center which restricts research time. The
scheduled class time is not used as classroom support time. The Media Center is not open before
or after school for student use. The Media Center Specialist creates individual lessons. The lack
of flexibility does not create an information hub because of the restrictions. There are computers
in the Media Center, there is not enough technology resources for each student. The curriculum
has changed to project based learning, but there is not the 1:1 technology. The Media Center
should have extended hours and be used as a research center for students. Scheduled classes
should coordinate with the classroom lessons. For example, a fourth grade class is making a

project on the solar system. The Media Specialist can use schedules class time to teach the solar
system or make a project outline.
The components in the Administrative support category the scores varied from basic to
proficient. There is not a strong support system for Media Specialist at a District level. The
communication form the District Coordinator is minimal. There are not district meeting so the
Media Center Specialist can coordinate. Media Specialists are not treated like a team or unit.
There is district wide policies, but they are general. There are not committees to support Media
Specialists. The funding is adequate but there is a lack of guidance and support to use the funds.
The following are the action steps I recommend to achieve exemplary status.

Collaboration with each grade level to coordinate Media Center lessons. The Media
Center Specialist could attend all grade level meeting to create lessons that support the
classroom teachers. The collaboration would allow the Media Specialist to teach and
assess the scheduled classrooms.
The Media Center should be open before and after school time. There is scheduled class
time, but there should be scheduled time for teachers to bring their classroom for
research, technology, support, etc. There should be a detailed Media Center schedule so
the staff and the students can use the library resources.
The Media Center needs an Ipad cart or the resources to provide 1:1 technology. In order
for the Media Center to be a primary information source the students need technology.
Media Center funds should be allocated accordingly.
The Media Center Specialists in each school need regular support, guidance, and unity.
The Media Centers in Fulton County are treated as separate entities. There is a lack of
support at the district level and the school level. There should be District and school
policies to support the Media center Specialists at the schools.
