UBC ENGINEERING & SCIENCE FOR KIDS

Geering Up UBC Engineering & Science for Kids is a


non-profit organization with the mandate of promoting science, engineering, and technology to youth
across British Columbia. Affiliated with the University of British Columbia, Geering Up is designed, organized and operated by UBC students. We endeavour
to show program participants how fun, exciting and
useful engineering and science can be.

Geering Up is a proud network member of Actua.


Actua provides training, resources and support to
its national network of members located at universities and colleges across Canada in the delivery of
science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) education outreach programming. Each year
these members engage over 225,000 youth in 500

what are gEERING UP


CampS?
Geering Up camps are all about making Science,
Technology, and Engineering hands-on and exciting.
Each day is a dynamic mix of hands-on activities,
demonstrations, tours, mentors, and design challenges. Our camps are taught by experienced university students with a passion for their field of study.
In addition to all of this, we ensure each camper
spends at least one hour of each day participating in
active games outside.

July 4th-Sept 1st
LENGTH:
9am-3pm, 1 week long

PRICING: $200-260 (varies with camps)

MINIMINDS

Grade 1
MiniMinds is one of our general science &
engineering camps. In the past, MiniMinds activities have included tactile slime, milk & food
colouring fluid dynamics, human body maps,
and egg drop design challenges.

EXPLORERS

Grades 2-3
Explorers is our grade 2-3 general science &
engineering camp offered in two sections:
A-Week and B-Week. In the past, Explorers activities have included acid-base reactions with
indicators, Quidditch, toothpick tower construction, a nature walk in Pacific Spirit Park,
and the science behind bubbles.

CAMP DESCRIPTIONS
IMAGINEERS

Grades 4-5
Imagineers is also offered in A-Week and BWeek, and is a general science & engineering
camp. In the past, Imagineers activities have
included a CSI-themed day full of the science
behind crime scenes, building periscopes,
a zip-line car design challenge, Engineering
Physics lab tours, coding in Scratch, and building Lego Mindstorm robots.

DISCOVERERS

Grades 6-7
This year we are excited to offer two weeks
of Discoverers, our grade 6-7 general science
& engineering camp! In the past, Discoverers
activities have included bottle submarines,
breadboarding and circuitry, tours of TRIUMF,
stomp rockets, and electroplating pennies.

INNOVATORS

Grades 8-10
A week jam-packed full of science and engineering projects. From soldering circuits to
chemistry experiments to biology dissections,
Innovators is a great place to learn more about
science and engineering.

MASTERMINDS

Grades 11-12
This is a peek into the world of UBC Engineering, packed full of lab tours, professor mentors,
engineering design challenges, and on-campus
experiences.

MAKER CAMP

Grades 4-6
We are excited to be able to provide a Makerstyle camp, with a focus on design and technology. Potential activities include coding with
Scratch, Lego Mindstorms design challenges,
working with Arduinos, designing rockets,
building concrete structures, and more!

CODEMAKERS

Grades 2-12
A camp focussed on computer science! There
are two themes for Junior (Grades 2-5)
GENERAL for those looking for the basics, and
ROBOTICS for those with some experience.
For Senior (Grades 6-12), there is CS DESIGN
for those interested in HTML, Java, and Web
Design, and PRINCIPLES OF CODING for
those who want to write their own programs in
Python, Arduino, and C.

GIRLS ONLY

Grades 2-12
An exciting curriculum of science and engineering through workshops, challenges, and projects,
but specifically in a Girls Only environment! We
have two Girls Only themes:
STEAMScience, Technology, Engineering, Art,
and Math. A creative design camp for girls.
Community BuildersA Maker Camp for
high school girls focused on solving real world
problems for real world communities.
