Week 3, Assignment 2
10/01/2016
The topic chosen is Electrical. I feel that this topic demands code compliance in
Residential design because if not met it can cause fires, electrocution, and even
death.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), electrical fires are responsible for 310 deaths,
1,100 injuries each year along with $1.1 Billion dollars in property damage. (firerecruit)
Electrical fires each year are around 26,000+ and are mainly caused by faulty electrical outlets,
outdated appliances or cords being chewed or mangled. Many people think it is ok to run
multiple electrical cords throughout the home in order to comply with the many appliances
they have, but this is damage to the electrical outlet where it does not allow so much output
causing it to overheat and spark creating fire. By creating enough outlets throughout the home
where one does not have to use extension cords is a great way to minimize the use of them and
have the less opportunity to create a fire. This is something an Electrician would have to work
together with the Designer in order to comply with the clients needs.
The wiring also a major factor of electrical fires due to often outdated wiring in an older
building where it does not have the capacity of increased amounts of electrical appliances in
todays day. Computers, Televisions, Microwaves, etc. have the three prong cords, where as
many years ago those were not available. By removing all the old outlets and rewiring the
whole building with new wiring creates the appropriate type of outlet for the appliances.
Especially since all appliances should be plugged in directly into the wall and not an extension
cord. Another thing that must be changed are the breakers, as these help trigger when circuits
get overloaded by too much electricity. Often times where there is an outdated breaker box,
they are often worn out and do not work effectively causing electrical fires due to an overload
of electricity.
Another thing about electrical compliance is where electrical outlets anywhere near water
should be GFI or Ground Fault Interrupter outlets. Outside outlets should always be GFI outlets.
If these outlets are not met there is a good chance that the shock of a person standing near a
wet, damp floor or with wet hands touching a cord could be fatal. The body is a great
conductor of electricity, mainly when standing in a puddle of water or damp floor. The body
can carry current to the ground and a person can get electrocuted and possibly cause death.
The electrical design of any home should always comply with all of the codes. It is the safest
way and cost effective way when designing a home. The clients would want that the electrical
work that is being done for their home will last a lifetime and not have to worry about any
electrical fires or worse.

Designing a space can be very difficult, but creating different designs and changing
as one can see that something will not work for the design helps with the decisions
on which design will work for the client. From creating sketches for the floorplan,
sketches for the furniture, creating the boards and the models brings everything into
perspective in helping what designs works best. The designing phase can be a easy
one as more research can be done on the client, making sure that all of their needs
are met and it helps with not having to change or redesign a space. Also knowing
the sizes of the desired furniture is a big help in order to understand more about the
space. If a design consist of a small room and the client wants a big piece of furniture
then the designer will have to make arrangement on how that could work prior to the
final design.
What I have learned in this class will help me a great deal in the future. It has taught
me that work more on my sketches and designs. It has helped me understand more
on how to work with the client as well as what is needed in order to complete a great
design. The schematic plans help a great deal to better understand how the design
will be finalized. Before I had in my mind that a design is done and thats that.that
is definitely not the case. I dont know why I thought that. What might work best for
one person is not going to work for others. It is always best to understand the client
and their needs before anyone elses.
Making models is a huge help as well. It helps to see the final product, providing
feedback on the space. If the space is going to work or things need to be changed. It
is always best to cut out all the pieces to size to have a much better understanding of
it. It is hard when not all correct tools are used, so it is always best to take that extra
time to gather all the correct tools in order for the model to come out the way it
would look in life-size. I hope that with all the skills provided through out this course,
I will be able to obtain a position and start a career in design.
