INTRODUCTION
This document specifies the work and methods to be performed by the vendor in which pipes
and piping materials shall be identified, by means of marking and colour coding, done by
painting, stamping and stencilling, pressing and cast moulding, to be followed by the vendor for
the realisation of the Pearl (GTL) Project at Ras Laffan, Qatar
1.1
Definition
a)
Contractor: The EPC contractor responsible for the design and engineering of the facility
b)
Vendor: The party that sell manufactures or otherwise produces or supplies equipment
and / or goods and services covered by this technical specification.
c)
2.0
SCOPE OF SUPPLY
The scope of supply is for colour coding of Pipe and Piping Components and is intended to
supplement, not replace, normal identification marking required by ANSI, ASME, ASTM, MSS
or other standards and specifications.
Identification requirements for GRE/GRVE pipes and piping components shall be as specified
in separate technical specification T-13.376.808.
3.0
TYPE OF MATERIALS
This colour coding specification applies to the following types of piping materials:
4.0
a)
Pipe
b)
c)
Forged Fittings
d)
Flanges
e)
f)
Valves
G)
Gaskets
MARKING
Marking shall utilize a water-insoluble ink that does not contain substances that could have a
harmful affect to the materials, such as metallic pigments, sulphur, zinc, sulphides or chlorides.
For full marking requirements reference shall be made to document:T-13.377.437 Specification for Certification and Marking of Materials.

5.0
COLOUR CODING
Colour coding shall be done at locations where the painting will not cover other markings and
weld bevels.
5.1
Exclusions
Paint shall not be applied in any circumstance to the following:
5.2
a)
b)
Threads.
c)
Weld bevels.
d)
e)
Casting
Castings shall have the Charge or Heat Number cast-in to the material. Other required
markings shall also be cast-in, in an order of preference. (Refer to Doc No T-13.377.437)
5.3
Inaccessibility
In cases where it is physically impossible to apply the required marking (e.g small sizes) it
would be acceptable to apply the marking on a durable securely affixed stainless steel tag to
codify the marking,
All piping items shall be colour coded as per the material requirements of paragraph 10.0
6.0
OXYGEN SERVICE
Piping material intended for oxygen service shall also be colour coded (with the exception of
valves and gaskets). The vendor shall also clearly label all materials and equipment relevant to
this service in bold lettering:
SUITABLE FOR OXYGEN SERVICE!
KEEP SEALED UNTIL REQUIRED FOR USE AND KEEP FREE FROM OIL AND GREASE!
Note: For marking of valves compatible to Oxygen Service reference shall be made to
additional company document SPE 77/205 as mentioned in all buying descriptions for this
service.
Note: For marking of gaskets compatible to Oxygen Service reference shall be made to
additional company document SPE 85/103 as mentioned in all buying descriptions for this
service.

Colour Coding - Each length of pipe shall be painted over the entire length with a 12 mm to 40
mm wide stripe. Vendor shall exercise good judgement in selecting appropriate width,
depending on size of pipe.

The vendors stamp marks shall be provided on the heads of machine bolts, one end of stud
bolts and one side of each nut.
11.7
Valves
Colour Coding - Each Threaded, Socket Weld, Butt Weld or Flangeless (wafer type) Valve
shall be dabbed with a spot of paint 12 mm to 25 mm in diameter in accordance with Table 1
for coding selection.
Each Flanged Valve shall have the outer peripheral edge of each flange painted over the entire
circumference. For flanges thicker than 25 mm, the width of the band may be limited to 25 mm.
Reference should be made to Table 1 for colour selection.
All valves and instruments identified for Oxygen Service shall not be painted but bear the
warning:
OXYGEN - KEEP FREE FROM OIL AND GREASE
Note: For marking of valves compatible to Oxygen Service reference shall be made to
additional company document SPE 77/205 as mentioned in all buying descriptions for this
service.
11.8
Gaskets
Spiral Wound Gaskets (DN15 to DN600)
Colour Coding Spiral Wound gaskets shall be identified with Three Stripes at two locations,
opposite each other as follows:
Stripe 1 Represents Winding material - shall be identified by paint in accordance with
relevant colour code of ASME B16.20 clearly painted around the outer periphery in total.
Stripe 2 Represents Filler/Inner material a narrower stripe (width at vendors discretion)
shall be applied over stripe 1 with the relevant colours as indicated under Gaskets Section on
Table 1.
Stripe 3 Represents Gasket Rating - shall be applied partially over stripe 2 (width at vendors
discretion) with the relevant colours as stated below:
150# Rating - None
300# Rating - Orange (BS No 557)
600# Rating - Light Violet (BS No 797)
900# Rating - Black (BS No 642)
1500# Rating - Ruby (BS No 542)
Where there are exceptions i.e. 2 where the MESC code uses the same gasket for 300# &
600# because the flange dimension are the same the colours of both ratings shall be applied to
identify the gasket.
