Chemical Kinetics: Determining the Order of a Reaction
INTRODUCTION/GOALS OF EXPERIMENT

RESULTS
Part 1: Determination of the Order of the Reaction with
Respect to Permanganate (PM)

For each experiment, determine the initial rates from the slope. The least
squares fit line should go through most of the points. If not, there is a
problem with the calculation.
Show one example graph with best-fit line here:

Complete the following table:

Determine the x-exponent by plotting log PM on the x-axis and the log
(initial rate) on the y-axis. Determine the slope by the best-fit line. That is
the value of the x in the exponent.
Show your graph.

According to the reaction mechanism show in Appendix 1 on page 14, the

reaction should be first order in mandalate concentration. With this
information, report the rate law using integer of half-integer values:

Part 2: Determination of Activation Energy

For the solutions that were in the ice/cold baths, you will have rates at three
temperatures (room temperature, cold bath, and ice bath). Calculate the rate
constant at different temperature by using your derived rate law and
complete the following table.

Plot 1/T (in Kelvin) on the x-axis and ln (rate constant) on the y-axis.
Show your graph.
The slope of the line is equal to Ea/R. Calculate and report Ea in kJ.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Is your rate law consistent with the reaction as written in Appendix 1?

Why or why not?
2. Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic according to your results?
