By a show of hands, how many of you have ever been vaccinated?

Im assuming that you have all received the mumps, measles, and rubella or the
meningitis vaccine, for example. Im also going to assume that youve never contracted mumps,
measles, rubella, or meningitis. Youve been kept healthy and safe because you have been
vaccinated against those diseases. What does this show? Vaccines work.
So why do some people not trust vaccines? The anti-vaccination movement arose from
falsified studies and lies told on both sides of the argument, and the distrust that followed gave
way to unvaccinated individuals. You are probably most familiar with the claim that vaccines
cause autism in children, but this has been proven to be false by many studies outside of the
CDC. The other major problems we face include vaccines violating religious beliefs, which use
the 1st Amendment of the Constitution for protection, and more recently, philosophical reasons,
which are now legal in 20 states.
What these reasons have in common is that they cannot be falsified. The best way to
convince these people to vaccinate their children is by giving them reasons to do so. The CDC
can start by performing honest studies and not lying about results, and follow up by using
advertising campaigns to inform Americans to make the right choice. Its pretty simple here
because most people are already vaccinated, but what about other countries?
Pakistan, for example, reported 80% of polio cases in 2014 because terrorists turn away
vaccination workers or kill them, not to mention poor accessibility to villages and a weak
economy. People in Pakistan are denied vaccines because of the many problems that the region
faces, but India, which is right next to Pakistan, faced similar problems and eliminated all of
their polio cases with strict planning and coordination, along with help from the World Health
Organization and other groups. This shows that diseases can be beaten and everyone can remain
healthy and safe, but only with careful planning and teamwork. Eliminating diseases is a simple
task when everyone has an open mind and good information.
