Forthelasttwocenturiesorso,therehasbeenasocalleddivideintheworldofwesternphilosophy
betweenthetraditionsofmainlandEurope(mostlyGermanyandFrance),andthoseofEngland.The
former,followingKant,arereferredtoasContinentalPhilosophy,andcollectivelycompriseanumberof
oshootssuchasidealism,phenomenology,existentialism,structuralism,andothers.Thetraditionfrom
England,followingtheempiricismofLocke,Hume,andBentham,iscalledAnalyticPhilosophy.Four
basicthemesthatcharacterizeContinentalPhilosophy,especiallyasopposedtoAnalytic,canbebroadly
statedasthefollowing:arejectionofscienticmethodsasthebestoronlywaytounderstandnatural
phenomena;adependenceonhistoricalcontextforformulatingphilosophicproblemsandsolutions;a
beliefinhumanagencyasthebasisforanypossibleexperienceortransformation(personal,moral,
political,etc.);andageneralreactionagainstthesuccessofthenaturalsciencesinlieuofemphasison
metaphysicsandtheredenitionorformulationofphilosophyitself.
ThetopicofthisessaywillbeabriefsummaryanddiscussionoftheideasofMartinHeidegger,a
Germanphilosopherwhohasbeencalledthemostimportantandinuentialthinkerofthe20thcentury
intheContinentaltradition.Inacertainsense,HeideggeristheprototypeofthemodernContinental
philosopher,andtounderstandhimwillallowustograspmuchofwhatcamebeforeandafter,
includingthestateofthedividetoday(forarecentdiscussiononthislasttopic,seetheinteresting
articleshere(hp://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/bridgingtheanalyticcontinentaldivide/)
andhere(hp://bebereignis.blogspot.it/2012/03/onanalyticcontinentaldivide.html)).Oneofthemajor
criticismsdirectedtowardsHeideggeristheinaccessibilityofbothhiswritingstyleandhisideas(called
obscurantismbysomecritics),whichIndtobeanalmostunforgivablefaultinanyphilosopher(which
isalsoubiquitousintheAnalyticschool).Inmyopinion,aphilosophershouldhelptounravelreality
andexplainthingsclearly,ratherthanrenderingthemevenmoreunintelligible.Themainreasonforhis
dicultstyleisthathewasaemptingtoinventawholenewphilosophicalvocabularyandtochange
thecourseofphilosophyafterwhathesawasawrongturnasearlyasthetimeofPlato.Hismainfocus
wastheideaofBeingitself,andwhatitmeanstoexist.MyreasonforwritingonHeideggeristobeginto
expressmyownevolvingopinion,whichhassofarmovedthroughthreephases:curiousinterestinhis
ideasandinuence;dismissalofhimasmisguidedandpossiblyirrelevant;andgradualpragmatic
acceptanceofthepotentialusefulness,andmaybeevendeceptivesimplicity,ofhisideas.Beingasbrief
aspossible,Iwillgiveanoutlineofhislife,hismostimportantworkBeingandTime,hislaterworks,
somecriticisms,and,mostimportantlyforme,howwemightunderstandandusehisphilosophy.

MartinHeidegger(18891976)
Heideggerwasbornin1889insouthwestGermany,raisedasaRomanCatholic,andpreparedtoenter
thepriesthood.Hebecameinterestedinphilosophy,however,andcompletedhisdoctorateinthisarea
in1913.HebeganteachingattheUniversityofFreiburgfromthistimeasajuniorassociateofEdmund
Husserl,thephilosopherofthenewschoolofphenomenology.Heideggercontinuedteachingwithout
interruptionuntiltheendofWorldWarII,includingdozensofstudentswhowouldlaterbecomehighly
importantphilosophersinvariousoftheContinentaltraditions.In1927hepublishedSeinundZeit(Being
andTime),whichrevealedabreakwithHusserlandallmodernphilosophy,andanewemphasisona
fundamentalphenomenologicalontology.HebecamepoliticallyinvolvedwiththeriseoftheNazi
partyin1933,whichheseeminglysupporteduntiltheirnaldownfallin1945.Hewasquickly
appointedastherectoroftheUniversityofFreiburgin1933becauseofhispoliticalsupport,andwas
forcedtoretirein1946aftertheprocessofdenazication.Hewasallowedtoregainhispostandteach
regularlyin1951until1958,whenheretiredandspentmostofhistimeinseclusionathishomeinthe
BlackForest,nearthemouthoftheDanube.Hediedin1976attheageof86.
ThelevelofhispersonalsupportoftheNazipartyisobviouslyahighlycontroversialissue.Ina1966
interviewwiththemagazineDerSpiegel,heaemptedtoportrayhissupportasawaytoexertapositive
inuenceontheNazis,andtoprotecthisuniversityfrombecomingpoliticized.Heclaimedthathewas
anearlyidealisticsupporteruntilhechangedhismindafterthe1934NightoftheLongKnives.There
iscertainevidencethatpointstothefactthathewasmuchmoreinvolvedthanheclaimed,andquite
sympathetictotheNazicauseevenuntiltheendofthewar.HisstudentEmmanuelLevinaslatersaid,
OnecanforgivemanyGermans,buttherearesomeGermansitisdiculttoforgive.Itisdicultto
forgiveHeidegger.Themainissueforphilosophersandhistoriansistodecidehowmuchthese
sympathiescouldhaveinuencedhisphilosophyitself.Thesubjectshouldalwaysbebroughtinto
considerationwhendiscussingHeidegger,withtheunderstandingthathemostlikelymadeabhorrent
personalpoliticalchoices,eitherforselfpreservationorbecauseofoutrightsupportofNazism.From
myreading,Iamoftheopinionthathispoliticalinvolvementdoesnotnecessarilyundermineor
discounthisuniquetheoreticalphilosophy.
BeingandTime
Heideggersmagnumopushasacompletelymetaphysicalfocus,whichismorespecicallytheareaof
metaphysicscalledontology,thestudyofbeing.Itgoeswithoutsayingthatittakesnoneofitssubjects,
evidence,ormethodsfromanyactualsciences,butreliesonthephenomenologicalmethodinspiredby

Husserl.WhileHusserlsawPhenomenologyasawholephilosophicalconstruct(claimingthatallofour
experienceorphenomena,includingeverythingmental,hasanobjectoutsideofus,independentofusin
theworld),Heideggeruseditashismethodtodirectourconsciousnessindirectlytowardsanaccessof
understandingofourexistingstateofbeing,ifnottheoverallideaofBeingitself.Heideggercalledthis
accessDasein,whichmeansexistence,butwhichHeideggerexplainedtomeanbeingthere,orthe
timeandplaceofouralreadyexistingbeingintheworld.
Asyoucanalreadysee,thisishighlyabstractstu,andeventheEnglishtranslationsofHeideggers
termsarelessthanenlightening.Theyhighlightmoreofaprocessforunderstandingthanasimple
denition,whichispartoftheintent,nodoubt.IwilltrytomovethroughhisexplanationofBeingasif
itwereamap,andwhichyoucanhopefullyseemoreclearlywiththeuseofthehelpfulchartbelow.At
theend,accordingtomyinterpretation,youmightndthattheresultofallthisabstractioncanbe
surprisinglysimpletounderstand.
HeideggersDasein,orbeingthere,leadsmoreconcretelytothefactofBeingintheWorld,sinceitis
onlyintheworldthatwecanexist.Thethreemainaspectsofthisexistingstatearecalledprojection,
throwness,andfallenness.Projectionleadstounderstandingofourexistenceandfuturepotentiality,
throwness(becausewearealwaysalreadythrownintotheworld)leadstoourstateofmindof
facticity(thatis,thefactofourlimitedness),andfallennessshowshowwearesurroundedonlyby
thingsthatareeitherDaseinornotDasein,andthereforeweunderstandourfallingintimeand
authenticitytowardsothers(theThey).Thesethreeaspectsadduptotheanxietyofourexistence,
becauseweunderstandthatwearebeingsmovingtowardsDeath.Thisrealizationcausesbothasense
ofguilt,aswellasourconsciencenessoftheneedtondasolution.Thissolution,accordingto
Heidegger,istohaveanticipatoryresolutenesstowardsourimpendingdeath.Hisconclusionisthat
thenatureofBeingisonlypossibletounderstandthroughmeansofTemporalitythatis,allBeingis
predicatedonTime,or,allbeingshaveanendtimelimit,whichisdeath.Sotherathersimpleresultthat
IreferredtoearlieristhatBeingdependsonTime,andthatTimedeneseveryaspectofourBeing.

ofthisshiftseemstobeachangeinperspectiveoftheentitiesofBeingandDasein(whichis,onceagain,
ismerelyaninstantiationofanalreadyexistingbeing,ratherthantheseparateandindependentobject
ofBeingitself).InBeingandTime,heportrayedDaseinasasortofclearing(asinathickforest)where
phenomenaarerevealedoruncoveredforourunderstanding;later,therolesreversedasheemphasized
theactiveagencyofBeingrevealingoruncoveringitselfonDasein.Somerecurringthemesinhislater
worksincludediscussionsoftechnology,poetry,andareexaminationofancientGreekphilosophy.
Technology,renderedfromitsGreekrootoftekhne,meanstheuseoftoolsorcraft(mental,aswellas
physical)tobuild,create,orcontrolsomething.Ratherthanfocusingonthetoolsthemselvesorthe
creativeresultofthetechnologicalcraft,Heideggerismoreinterestedintheprocessofrevealingoftruth
thataBeingencountersduringtheprocessofcreation.Hethusseesthepositivepotentialinthecreation
throughtechnology,butthatthispotentialisoftensquanderedbecausewedirectouraentionnoton

considermoderntechnology,andseemstoalwayssearchforasolutioninearlier,pretechnologicalages
orinnaturalseinguntouchedbymoderndevelopmentsorimprovementsofanykind.Whathe
actuallymightbeintendingisratherawayforhumanstolivepeacefullywithtechnologywhilenot
leingitdistractfromourtruebeing.Furthermore,whiletechnologycanbedangerous,hethinksitcan
alsobeameansofsalvationtowardsourrevealingofthetruthofBeing,whichisalsothewaytowards
themostprofoundkindoffreedom.Thistheme,developedoverseveraldecadesandperhapsbest
representedinthe1954essayTheQuestionConcerningTechnology
(hp://www.wright.edu/cola/Dept/PHL/Class/P.Internet/PITexts/QCT.html),isquitediculttograsp,
letalonedescribeinoneparagraph.Nevertheless,inmyopinion,itmightrepresentsomeofthemost
useful,forwardlooking,andfruitfulthoughtinallofHeideggerswork.
Poetry,accordingtoHeidegger,sharesthesamepossibilityoftechnologyofrevealingsomething
throughtheactofcreation(inthiscase,theoriginalGreekrootforpoemcomesfrompoiein,tocreate).
HewrotemuchontheGermanRomanticpoetFriedrichHlderlin.Someassociatedmetaphysical
themesrelatedtopoetry(ordescribedinsomewhattranscendentalorpoeticterms)areHeideggers
aempttodescribebeingasadwellingintheworld.Hewritesopenlyofthemysteryofthisdwelling
orhabitation,sayingthatthemysteryofbeingisunintelligible,oranothing.Thisnothingness,he
claims,isneverthelessapositiveontologicalaspect.Inonesense,ourbeingissimultaneously
understoodashowwedwellintheworld.ThereisaninterestingdocumentarylmcalledTheIster

HeideggercametotheviewthatthelineofthinkingofallphilosophyfromPlatothroughDescartesto
thepresenthadbeeninfundamentalerror,notonlyinthelossofthequestioningofBeing,butalsoin
thepreoccupationwithscienceandtechnology,andbythefactthat(sohethought)mistranslationsof
theoriginalGreekwordshadcloudedourknowledgeoftheexperienceoftheearliestphilosophers.He
sawthepreSocraticphilosophers,suchasAnaximander,Heraclitus,andParmenides,asauthentically
focusedonanopennesstothequestionofBeing.Muchofhislaterworkincorporatesideasand
reinterpretationsfromthesephilosophersalongsidehisownontologicaluncoverings.Inacertain
sense,itseemslikeHeideggerwantedhisownwritingstohaveasimilarmysteriousandoraculartone
ofthatofthepreSocratics,someofwhosewritingsonlyexistinafewparagraphsorscaered
apothegms.

WalterKaufman,ascholarofNiescheandHeidegger,wroteofthelaerinhis1956bookExistentialism
fromDostoevskytoSartre:Hisdetractorsseehimasanobscurantistwhoseinvolvedconstructionswith
theirmultipleplaysonwordsconcealamixtureofbanalitiesandfalsehoods.Hisadmirerssaythathe
hasshownthetemporalityofmansexistence,thathestrikesnewpathsbyraisingthequestionofBeing,
andthatheisthegreatantiCartesianwhohasovercomethefatalbifurcationofmaerandmindand
theisolationofthethinkingself.Hiscritics,inturn,retortthatthislastfeatiscommontomostmodern
philosophersandthatHeidegger,unlikesomeoftheothers,achieveditonlybyrenouncingDescartes
rulethatwemustthinkasclearlyanddistinctlyasthemathematicians.This,sayhisadmirers,leadsto
positivism;whatiswantedisanewwayofthinking.
SomeoftheselogicalpositivistdetractorsincludeRudolfCarnap,whosaidHeideggersviolationof
logicalsyntaxledtononsensicalpseudopropositions,andA.J.Ayer,whoconsideredHeideggertobe
completelyuselessbecauseofhisunveriableandillogicalallencompassingtheoriesofexistence.
BertrandRussell,speakingmoreorlessfortheAnalyticschoolasawhole,wroteofHeidegger:Highly
eccentricinitsterminology,hisphilosophyisextremelyobscure.Onecannothelpsuspectingthat
languageishererunningriot.Aninterestingpointinhisspeculationsistheinsistencethatnothingness
issomethingpositive.AswithmuchelseinExistentialism,thisisapsychologicalobservationmadeto
passforlogic.
EvenamonglaterContinentalphilosophers,manyofwhomwerestudentsorfollowersofHeidegger,
almosteveryonehassomethingtocriticize.HerbertMarcuse,TheodorAdorno,andJrgenHabermas
haveall,soonerorlater,rejectedlargepartsofHeideggerswork.Sartretookmanyoftheideasthat
comprisedhisexistentialistphilosophydirectlyfromHeideggerswork,butHeideggerstatedexplicitly
thatSartrehadmisunderstoodmostofhisideas(whocanblamehim!),especiallyconcerningtheroleof
humanisminmetaphysics.Alas,whendealingwithsomeonelikeHeideggerwhowantedtoredenethe
nature,vocabulary,andpurposeofphilosophyitself,itisobviousthathewillbecomeapolarizing
gure.Thisbringsustothenaltopicofthisessay.
WhattomakeofHeidegger
AfterthisshortsummaryofHeideggersideas,wemustnowaskhowwecanbegintounderstandhis
philosophy,andtowhatuseitmightpossiblybetous.AsRussellclaimed,IthinkmuchofHeideggers
workis,infact,psychologicalinnaturethisisacommonandseeminglyharmlesscharacterizationthat
wasnonethelessvehementlydeniedbyHeideggerhimself.Butwhyshouldhedenyit?Perhapshe
thoughttheprofundityofhisthoughtwouldbeharmedbyarelegationtomerepsychology.Theeldof
psychologyonlybecameindependentfromthatofphilosophyaftertheworkofWilliamJamesatthe
turnofthe20thcentury,andevenNiesche,whoseinuenceonHeideggerwasenormous,proudly
claimedtobeapsychologistaswellasaphilosopher(askinginthelastchapterofEcceHomo,Who
amongphilosophersbeforemehasbeenapsychologist?).Heideggercertainlyhasvirtuallynothingto
dowithlogic,ethics,politics,oranyofthetraditionalsciences.Heisalmosttotallyconsumedwith
metaphysicalquestions;specically,thatbranchofmetaphysicsinvolvingbeing(ontology).Seenfrom
almostanyangle,thequestionsinthiselddealdirectlywithapersonsmentalandintellectually
understandingofhisexistencewhichcanonlyreallytakeplacerathersubjectivelyinthemind(aka,the
psyche).Hisquestionsofbeing,anxiety,fear,anddeatharefundamentallypsychologicalinnature,but
withaninterpretiveapproachratherthanthemodernemphasisonscienticmethodand
experimentation.Thisaspectofinterpretation,calledHermeneutics,alsostronglycharacterizes
HeideggerandlaterContinentalfollowers.Asasidenote,Heideggercomparesinsomerespectstoa
WesternversionofaTaoistphilosopher,orotherorientalstylemystagogue.Thoughthoroughly

PrizeforLiterature).IfweacceptthisunderstandingofHeideggerasasortofontologicalpsychologist,
thatnowleavesthenalquestionofwhatuse(ifany)wecanderivefromhisideas.

Thepointofthelm,inmyunderstanding,istoshowreallifeexamplesofHeideggersideaofthe
creativeimpulseasauthenticbeingsintheworld,showinganticipatoryresolutenessinthefaceof
temporality.Itistheideaofdeningandgivingmeaningandpurposetoourexistencethroughour
ownpersonalprojects,freeingourselvesfromtheyokeofconformityoftheThey,and,intheprocess,
comingclosertoanunderstandingofourtrue,ineableexistence.Inanutshell,thissumsupbothmy
understandingofthepositiveaspectsofHeideggersphilosophy,andmyideaofhowitcanalsobe
appliedtolife.Itissomethingtranscendentalandpoetic,andprobablyalreadyintuitivetoanyonewho
wantstoenjoyormaximizelife.Indeed,Idonotknowthatitisnottooreductivetoclaimthatmy
interpretationwouldbesomewhatselfevidenttoanycreativeperson,evenwithouttheneedfor
thousandsofpagesofsomewhatmystifyingphilosophicaltext!
SatisedwithmyownlifearmingpsychologicalinterpretationofHeidegger(andIwillbeskeptical
aboutanyaccusationsthatIhavemisinterpretedhim,becausehisworkisclearlytooobscureand
inaccessibletobeopentoanysinglecorrectandexpressibleinterpretation),Inowreturntotheideaof
itsplacewithinPhilosophy.AsIbegantodescribeinanearlierpost,DeningPhilosophyandItsUses
(hps://tigerpapers.net/2012/04/11/deningphilosophyanditsuses/),mypersonaldenitionfor
Philosophyisthemethodbywhichweaempttoanalyzetruthandsynthesizewisdom,whichcanthen
beusedintherealworldeitheratthelevelofindividualorsociety.Basically,Ithinkthattherearepros
andconswithboththeAnalyticandContinentaltraditionsofphilosophy,andthatpositiveaspectscan
betakenfromboth,whichwouldseemtomakemeintosomethinglikeaPragmatist.Personally,Iam
mostinterestedinEthicsandPolitics,bothintheoryandpractice,ratherthaneldssuchas
EpistemologyorMetaphysics,whichtendtobeattheheartoftheAnalytic/Continentaldebate.
ThetypeofmetaphysicsinwhichHeideggerengageshassometimesbeenconsideredtheveryepitome
ofphilosophy,orofdoingphilosophy,orofphilosophizing,ingeneral.Asawhole,itissomethingthatcan
beinterestingtocertaincuriousindividuals,butwhichcanarguablyneverachievemuchcertaintyor
haveanyrealworldeectbeyondtheindividualpsychologicallevel.Infact,whenevernewknowledge
hasbeendiscoveredinmetaphysics,thoseareasbecomeseparatenewsciences,suchasastrophysics,
neuroscience,linguistics,orevenexperimentalpsychology.Thisisnottosaythatthereisnousefor
metaphysicstodayfarfromitbutthatitmayoftenbebestexpressedintheformofpersonalbeliefs
(religiousorotherwise)orcreativeimpulses(art,literature,tekhne).But,contrarytomodernsciencesor
empiricalstudies,itreallycannotproveanything.Anotherwaytoputitisthatthistypeofmetaphysical
speculationmightbeanengagingactivityoranintellectualjourneyforitadherents,itcannevercometo
anyconclusionsorincreaseinknowledgesolongasitremainsdivorcedfromactualscienceandthereal
world.Forthatreason,Iampreparedtodealwithquestionsofmetaphysicsfromthepointofviewof
Pragmatism,whileregardingasmoreimmediateandconcretesuchpoliticalandethicalquestionsas
whatisthebestbalancebetweenfreedom,justice,andequality,andthebestrelationshipbetweenthe
stateandtheindividual.Accordingly,whilewemaychoosetospendourtimeintheprocessof

immediately.Is,inmanyinstance,justfactuallywrong.
First,therearemanycontinentalthinkerswhoare,infact,quitereadableandclear.EvenHeidegger
(whoasyounoted,isregardedaquitedicult)hasmanyclearandpreciseessays.Second,the
analytictraditionisnotimmunetothislackofclarity,justasanyseriousacademicdiscipline,
analyticphilosophyhasdevelopeditsowninternaljargonandstructurewhichisoftenimpenetrable
fortheuninitiated.
Yet,isthisdiculty,withinbothcontinentalandanalyticphilosophy,trulyaproblem?Whocould
beexpectedtofollowacurrentneuroscienceorphysicsjournalwithouteventhemostbasic
familiaritywiththeeld?Similarly,philosophy(onbothsidesofthedivide)requirestime,eort,
andwork.Itisanoddbiasofmodernthoughttobelievethatphilosophy,unlikeothersciences,
shouldbeinstantlycleartothelayperson.Onthecontrary,dicultquestionsrequiredicult,and
oftencomplex,answers;answerswhichmayrequirethedevelopmentofjargonanddicult
language.
