BOILER CONTROL OVERVIEW (OPTION 1)

1. BURNER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (BMS)

The Burner Management System (BMS) is primally installed to ensure the boiler plant is always
operating within safe and defined parameters as per NFPA 850. If these parameters are violated
the BMS activates a shut down to ensure no damage equipment is sustained. The system is also
designed to automate the operation of burners.
Burner equipped with local burner junction box with an EMERGENCY STOP pushbutton located
in burner area. The push button (red mushroom) maintained push-pull switch triggers a master
fuel trip when actuated. Also included on the door are two meters that display flame intensity
detected by each scanner. All other controls and indicators for the BMS will be handled by
Programmable Controller (PLC).
Burner Management System (BMS) standard solution is based on Programmable Controller
platform (PLC). Single processor, associated I/O Module, Built in port communicationand other
hardware will be housed in a single enclosure located in Control Room.
Communication between PLC for Burner Management system and PLC for Boiler Control will use
Serial Communication (RS 232C/485) or vendor standar. All the BMS data sequence will be
displayed by computer/MMI located in Control Room.

BOILER CONTROL OVERVIEW (OPTION 1)

PLC for BMS will mainly include and execute the following control functions:

Interlock system.
Fuel trip.
Master fuel trip (MFT).
Flame monitoring and tripping system.
Ignition system.
Purge system sequence.
Burner startup sequence.
Burner shutdown.

Throughout system operation, field sensors monitor boiler and burner status to detect unsafe
operating conditions. If an unsafe condition is detected, the BMS either prevents initial light-off or
triggers complete shutdown of the burner. When a failure or the loss of any necessary interlock
triggers burner shutdown, the BMS automatically activates an alarm to notify the operator and
identify the source of the problem.
2. BOILER CONTROL
Boiler control system is group of control systems that regulates the boiler process including the
combustion control but not the burner management. Boiler control system standard solution is
based on Programmable Controller platform (PLC). Single processor, associated I/O Module,
Built in port communicatio to communicate with PLC for BMS and other hardware will be housed
in a single enclosure located in Control Room.
PLC for Boiler Control will mainly include and execute the following control functions:

Combustion control system (Boiler Master).

Fuel to air ratio Metered Cross Limited.
Excess air trim.
Drum level control Single element and three element.
Deaerator level and pressure control.
Steam temperature control (Desuperheater system).
Pressure reducing control (if required).
Boiler Feedwater Pump Start/Stop.
Forced Draft Fan Start/Stop.
Chemical Pump Start/Stop.
Etc.

Operator interface station/Man Machine Interface (MMI) will include the following functions :

Boiler overview screen.

BMS sequence.
Boiler start/stop screens.
Pump and Fan start/stop screens.
Process flow and analog screens.
PID loop data entry and tuning screen.
Alarm status (alarm event will be printed).
Alarm History.
Etc.
