Social Studies Standard: K.SS.2.1.4 Recognize a map of the United States of America and know it is the country in which we live.
Curricular objective/s: Students will be able to correctly identify a map of the United States of America in an atlas and draw a picture on a post card for
another kindergarten student that relates to life in the United States.
Curricular assessment: Students will express thoughts and ideas clearly as they draw pictures on a postcard to someone in another kindergarten class in the
United States about where they live.
Vocabulary terms and definitions: Geography: the study of physical features of the earth, globe: a model of the earth, country: a nation with its own
government, map: a representation of an area of land or sea, United States of America: a country with a government that promotes freedom.
Materials: Me on the Map by Joan Sweeny, Classroom map, atlas or map for each parent or teacher to carry around, White board with objective on it, 4
Books and 5 pictures relating to the Unites States at each table, postcards, pencils, crayons, markers, stamps.
Accommodations:
For more advanced children: The children that need to be challenged more can be encouraged to actually read the word in the books that are provided at
their tables, and to also write a note to another kindergartener on their postcard describing their picture to them.
For children that might need more help: These children might need more one-on-one guidance to make sure they are staying on task and looking at the
books and pictures to do their research. They might only be required to find one interesting thing, or answer one question that was asked by the teacher. If
they are unable to draw on their postcards, they can simply be given the opportunity to with the materials, and encouraged to do their best.
