CANTUS

CODEX

RULES
A cantus is an old Belgian traditional night where students
come together to sing and drink. The important rule is
HAVING FUN! This does not happen in a random way,
everything is organized by a set of rules.
Where it all starts...
The evening starts when the "senior" enters the room. He
will be the chairman or the big boss for tonight.
The "senior" opens the evening with the words. "CANTUS
IN which is Latin for: the cantus has started. You are the
CORONA.
Verbum
Because a cantus is about tradition and respect, you
should always address the senior in a formal way. If you
want to say something you make a V above your head:
"PETO VERBUM". The senior decide if you can speak by
saying: "HABES" or refuses: "NON HABES ".
When you have to get up the senior says SURGITE and
you say SURGIMUS. The senior decides when you can
sit by saying: OMNES AD SEDES". You reply with
SEDIMUS.

If the senior says: "SILENTIUM", you reply with TRIPLEX

and everybody must stop talking and obey the silence.
Tempus
If you want to leave the table (e.g. to go to the toilet), you
make a T above your head PETO TEMPUS. The senior
agrees: HABES or refuses: NON HABES. You might
have to perform a little punishment or make a pissing
rhyme in order to go to the toilet.
Singing
If we sing, we sing! It is not allowed to disturb the cantus
in any way.
If there is "bis" behind a sentence you repeat it twice. If
a song is too long the senior can say during the song "At
ultimam, that means we go to the last verse. I can also
indicate in the beginning which block of texts or verse we
will sing. The senior indicates which strophe will be sung.

st1 : AD PRIMAM
nd2 : AD SECUNDAM
rd3 : AD TERTIAM
last: AD ULTIMAM

DrinkingIf you don't drink beer, you must mention this at

the beginning of the evening. The senior will instruct you
to drink. He will do so in Latin. He will say or sing the
words: PROSIT CORONA. You must then answer with:
PROSIT SENIOR. The senior can say this as many times
as he/she wants and you have to repeat it the same way.
In the end the senior will give a drinking command:
AD FUNDUM : The whole glass in one time AD LIBIDUM :
a half glass. AD TWO FINGERS: drink two fingers,
YOU NEVER DRINK WITHOUT FIRST SAYING PROSIT
SENIOR, PROSIT CORONA
For example the senior will say: PROSIT CORONA, AD
FUNDUM and you will reply with: PROSIT SENIOR,
PROSIT CORONA AD FUNDUM. After that you drink your
whole glass.
Another thing the senior can do is a Salamander. This
means we cheer together. An example:

Let us drink on the beautiful people that are here

tonight, commilitones (senior)
Heeeeeeeey (corona)
Let us drink on our committee, commilitones
Heeeeeeeey
Prosit corona, ad fundum!
Prosit senior, prosit corona, ad fundum

Nobody can force you to drink. If you dont want to drink

the whole glass, you dont have to. You can drink
whatever you want or stop drinking beer and ask for
water AT ANY TIME. Drinking is fun, but if you drink too
much it is less fun for you and the others! You can always
switch to water.
Punishments
If the senior decides that you didn't obey him or broke
one of the rules of the cantus, you will be asked to come
to the middle. This is called "AD PISTUM" or in Dutch IN
DE KAN. There you will have to perform a small and
funny punishment, unless you were really bad!
Messengers are the people who have to repeat the page
number. The senior decides who that will be. When the
senior says for example "We continue on page 213, the
page shafts repeat the page number like this "page 213,
2,1,3, 3,1,2, page 213". Other example page 11, 0, 1, 1,
1, 1, 0, page 11.

Clementine
In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine, Dwelt a
miner, forty-niner, and his
daughter Clementine.
Oh my darling, Oh my darling,
Oh my darling Clementine !
Thou art lost and gone for
ever, Dreadful sorry,
Clementine.
Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number
nine; Herring boxes, without
topses, Sandals were for
Clementine.
Chorus
Drove she ducklings, to the
water Every morning, just at
nine;Hit her foot against a
splinter, Fell into the foaming
brine.
Chorus

Saw her lips above the water,

Blowing bubbles mighty fine,
But alas I was no swimmer
So I lost my Clementine
Chorus
In my dreams she still doth
haunt me,Robed in
garments soaked in brine,
While in life I used to hug her,
Now she's dead I draw the
line.
Chorus
How I missed her, how I
missed her,How I missed my
Clementine, But I kissed her
little sister, And forgot my
Clementine.
Chorus

Drunken sailor
1. What shall we do with the
drunken sailor? (x3)Early in
the morning? Hooray and up
she rises, (3x) Early in the
morning.

2. Put him in the long-boat

until he's sober (x3) Early in
the morning? Hooray and
3. Pull out the plug and wet
him all over (x3)
4. Put him in the scuppers
with a hosepipe on him.
5. Heave him by the leg in a
running bowlin'.
6. That's w'll do with the
drunken sailor.

Wonderwall (Oasis)
Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it
back to you,
By now you should have
somehow realised what you
gotta do,
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you
now
Backbeat the word is on the
street That the fire in your
heart is out,

I'm sure you've heard it all

before But you never really
had a doubt,
I don't believe that anybody
feels The way I do about you
now
And all the roads we have to
walk are winding,
And all the lights that lead us
there are blinding,
There are many things that I
would Like to say to you,
But I don't know how
Because maybe,
You're gonna be the one that
saves me?And after all
You're my wonderwall,
Today was gonna be the
day?But they'll never throw
it back to you,
By now you should have
somehow, Realised what
you're not to doI don't
believe that anybodyFeels
the way I do,
About you now
All the roads that lead you
there are winding
7

All the lights that light the

way are blindingThere are
many things that I would like
to say to you, But I don't
know how
I said maybe,
You're gonna be the one that
saves me?And after
allYou're my wonderwall,
I said maybe,
You're gonna be the one that
saves me?
And after allYou're my
wonderwall
I said maybe
You're gonna be the one that
saves me
You're gonna be the one that
saves me
You're gonna be the one that
saves me

Mama Mia
I've been cheated by you since I
don't know when
So I made up my mind, it must come
to an end
Look at me now, will I ever learn?
I don't know how but I suddenly lose
control
There's a fire within my soul
Just one look and I can hear a bell
ring
One more look and I forget
everything, o-o-o-oh

Mamma mia, here I go again

My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed
you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, now I really know,
My my, I could never let you go.
I've been angry and sad about the
things that you do
I can't count all the times that I've
told you we're through
And when you go, when you slam
the door
I think you know that you won't be
away too long
You know that I'm not that strong.
Just one look and I can hear a bell
ring
One more look and I forget
everything, o-o-o-oh
chorus
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed
you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed
you

Friends Theme
So no one told you life was gonna
be this way
Your job's a joke
You're broke
Your lovelife's D.O.A.
It's like you're always stuck in
second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your
week, your month, or even your year
but

I'll be there for you

(When the rain starts to poor)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)
You're still in bed at ten,
and work began at eight
You've burned your breakfast
So far, things are going great
Your mother warned you there'd be
days like these
But she didn't tell you when the
world would bring you down to your
knees that
Chorus
No one could ever know me
No one could ever see me
Seems you're the only one who
knows, what it's like to be me
Someone to face the day with
Make it through all the rest with
Someone I'll always laugh with
Even at my worst I'm best with you,
yeah

It's like you're always stuck in second

gear
When it hasn't been your day, your
week, your month, or even your year
Chorus
I'll be there for you
I'll be there for you
I'll be there for you
'Cause you're there for me too

The wild rover

I've been a wild rover for
manys a year, I've spent all
my money on whiskey and
beer,
But now I'm returning with
gold in great store,
And I never will play the wild
rover no more.
Chorus:
And it's no nay never, never
no more, no nay never no
more,Will I play the wild
rover, no never no more.
I went into a nailhouse, I used
to frequent,I told the
landlady my money was
spent. I asked her for credit,
she answered me nay,
Such custom like yours I can
have every day.

I went up from my pocket ten

sovereigns bright,
And the landlady's eyes
opened wide with delight,
She says I have whiskeys and
wines of the best,and the
words that you told me were
only in jest.
Chorus
Ill go home to my parents,
confess what ive done, And
Ill ask them to pardon their
prodigal son.
And when theyve caressed
me, as oft times before,
Then I never will play the wild
rover no more.

Summer of 69
I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it til my fingers bledIt
was the summer of '69

Ain't no use in complaining

When you got a job to do
Spent my evenings down at
the drive-in, And that's when I
met you
Standing on your Mama's
porch, You told me that you'd
wait forever. Oh and when
you held my handI knew
that it was now or never.
Those were the best days of
my life
Oh yeah!

Me and some guys from

school, Had a band and we
tried real hard, Jimmy quit
and Jody got marriedI
shouldve known we'd never
get far
Oh when I look back now
That summer seemed to last
forever, And if I had the
choiceYa - I'd always wanna
be there, Those were the best
days of my life

Back in the summer of '69

Man we were killing time, We
were young and restless We
needed to unwindI guess
nothing can last forever forever, no

14

And now the times are

changin'Look at everything
that's come and gone
Sometimes when I play that
old six-string I think about ya
wonder what went wrong
Standin' on your mamas
porch, You told me that it last
forever, Oh the way you held
my hand,
I knew that it was now or
never, Those were the best
days of my life

Cockles and Mussels

In Dublin's Fair City, where
girls are so pretty,I first set
my eyes on sweet Molly
Malone.
As she wheeld her a wheelbarrow thro' streets broad
and narrow,

Chorus :
Crying "COCKLES AND
MUSSELS, alive, alive
oh!"Alive, alive oh! alive,
alive oh!Crying "COCKLES
AND MUSSELS, alive, alive
oh!"
She was a fishmonger, and
sure t was no wonder,For so
were her father and mother
before.
And they each wheeld their
barrow Thro' streets broad
and narrow,
Chorus
She died of a fever, and noone could save her,And that
was the end of sweet Molly
Malone,
Her ghost wheels her barrow
Thro' streets broad and
narrow,
Chorus

The wee birdies sing and the

wild flowers spring, And in

But the broken heart will
