Purpose of Instruction: Advanced Art-Elements of Game Design
Description of the learner: High School Student Grades 10-12

Students will have prior knowledge of playing board games


Students will have moderate technology skills
Students will have access to board games, technology (Adobe creative
suites), printer, and art supplies

Goals and Objectives of the instruction:


Learning Objective: The learners will create a group perception of a modern day
version of The Game of Life, using experiences from their life to redesign while
learning about the elements of game design.
Through the redesign of The Game of Life the students will be modifying the game
board (boundaries), objects, and rules to obtain the same goal of the game which is
to win at the game of life. The interactions will be with 4-5 players and the system
will that will be developed will be open and cultural.
The learning that will occur during the designing experience will be the
use/experience of the following 21st Century Skills:

Measured Outcome: The measured outcome will be the completion of a redesigned


game of The Game of Life that will be successfully played by another group in the
class.

Plan for the assessment of learning: Assessments will be designed for each
component of the core game design concepts. Students will complete weekly
reflections that will assess their progress and understanding of the concept studied.
The final project will have a rubric for grading that will include a peer
evaluation/rubric.
Scope and Sequence of Topics to be covered:
Class Period 1: Introduction to Game Design and Project using PPT
Class Period 2: Play Life
Class Period 3: Reflection of Game, Review of project, and Choose Groups
Class Period 4: Review project, Introduction of the Game Design Elements-Space,
Components, Mechanics, Goals, and Rules, and Students reflection on the game
design elements
Class Period 5: Pre-Development of Project
Class Period 6: Pre-Development of Project
Class Period 7-9: Project Work
Class Periods 10: Midpoint Critique/Reflection/ Project Work
Class Periods 11-13: Project Work
Class Period 14: Play Game
Estimated Time: Six Weeks/Meets every other day-Block Schedule/90 minute
Periods/14 Total class Periods
Specific Instruction Strategies:

Graphic Organizers for the development process of the games

KWL Charts at the start of project to access prior knowledge

Interactive Notebooks during the development stage and for reflections

Application, students will create game boards

Specific Media to be developed: For this project from I will produce the power point
presentation that will cover game designers (careers in art), game design elements,
and The Game of Life modification project.
Estimated time for the development process: I have planned two class periods for
the development process, than they will start the actual building of the game.

Plan for evaluation, maintenance, and update of instructional materials: I believe


much of this project will be evaluated on the students actively participating during
class time. I will have to monitor students participations and set daily goals for
achievement.
List of Approvals required: Each group will have to present a prototype of the game
board and sketches of the game pieces.
Plan for testing and quality assurance: On the final day of the six weeks the
students will play another groups game. The successful completion of playing the
game will be used for the evaluation.
