Lesson Plan #2
Matt Ball
Developmental Level I
Objective: Students will be able to effectively handle their ball with their feet by
kicking it properly and running between a home base and the first mat.
Teaching Method: Direct Instruction Style
Equipment and Set-up: A soft or light ball for every two students and two gym
mats or hula-hoops.
Introduction and Warm up: Students will listen to the history of the game of mat
ball, compare it to the more common game of kickball, and do their regular stretches
to prepare for the activity.
Fitness Activity: The students will be shown several different examples of how they
can use their ball and what the most effective kicking strategies are. They will follow
along with the instructor to create these different movements while focusing on
placement and balance within their own body so that they can get their ball to a
partner and back again. Then allow the students to practice running between home
and first base a few times for practice.
Focus Activity; Explain to the students that usually in the game of mat ball, there
are three mats or bases used but for this game they are only going to run between
home base and one other mat or base. Divide the class into two teams with one team
kicking first. Each time that someone kicks, allow him or her to run to first mat while
the other team tries to use the ball to get him or her out. Whenever a student
successfully reaches the first mat, then another classmate is free to run home. Allow
each team three or four turns as a whole in each position before switching. There
are no winners or losers for this age group. They should just be focused on kicking
the ball properly and being able to run between bases.
Closure: Ask the students what they liked best about the activity and what they saw
that their classmates did to kick their ball properly so it went where he or she
wanted it to go.
Develo) Level Il
Objective: Students will be able to understand the rules for the game of mat ball as
they properly handle the ball and work with their team to earn points or “home
runs” between home base and two mats.
Teaching Method: Direct Instruction Style
Equipment and Set-up: A soft or light ball for every two students and three gym
mats or hula-hoops.Instruction and Warm Up: Students will listen to the history of the game of mat
ball, and compare it to the more common game of kickball. They will then be taught
about the basic rules of mat ball and do their regular stretches in order to prepare
for the activity.
Fitness Activity: Students will practice running between each of the two mats and
the home base while tagging a classmate once they reach the next mat for them to
run on. This will prepare them to properly play a basic game of mat ball. Once they
have done this then they will partner up and practice kicking their balls to their
partner so it will go in the direction they want it to.
Focus Activity: Spend a few minutes going over the basic rules of mat ball again to
refresh the students’ memories. Divide the class into two teams and have them carry
‘out a game of mat ball with just two mats and a home base. As one team kicks, that
student will run to the first mat. Anyone on that mat is free to run to the next base if
they choose and there can be more than one person on a base at a time. The more
strict rules of the game will no be enforced during this developmental level. The
teams need to keep track of how many students make it all the way home and
whichever team has the most wins.
Closure: Ask the students what they have learned and if anyone can think of
anything that might make the game more challenging or exciting
Notes to Self: Ifa particularly difficult class is going to be coming in, it might be
wise to make the teams of children beforehand so that you can make sure they will
be able to work together without getting too competitive.
Developmental Level
Objective: Students will know how the game of mat ball works and be able to
effectively play a game with their classmates as they practice form and accuracy
while kicking their balls.
Teaching Method: Direct Instruction Style
Equipment and Set-Up: A soft or light ball for every two students to practice with
and a standard kick ball for the whole class to use during the game of mat ball. Four
gym mats or hula-hoops are also needed.
Instruction and Warm up: Students will listen to the history of the game of mat,
ball, and compare it to the more common game of kickball. They will then be taught
about the rules of mat ball and do their regular stretches in order to prepare for the
activity. With these stretches they will pay particular attention to stretching their
legs. Explanation will be given that they need to have strong and fit legs in order to
be good at kicking the ball in the direction they want it to go and then run to the
next base or mat.
rt
ness Activity: Students will be split into partnerships and they will practice
ing their ball back a forth while paying particular attention to the direction it is
going. They will then practice a drill where one partner kicks the ball farther away, the other partner will try to retrieve the ball and tag their partner before they are
able to run t the other side of the gym and touch the wall.
Focus Activity: Split the class into two teams and have them go through a practice
run of having a few students kick the ball while the other team attempts to get them
out before they reach the first mat. Go over the rules of mat ball again and ask the
students if they have any questions about the game. Keep this activity short so they
have enough time to play a real game of mat ball.
Game /Closure: Reinforce that there are no boundaries or rules on how someone
can kick their ball in this game. Allow the students to begin a game of mat ball.
Watch their moves and help them understand when they need to correct something
or if they are not following by the rules of the game in some way. Allow the
remainder of class time to be spent playing the game and seeing which team is able
to win by having the most students reach home base.
