ThepostdoctoralfellowshipintheDepartmentofEpidemiologyandEnvironmentalHealthattheStateUniversityofNew
YorkatBuffaloisopentoresearcherswhoarenotyettenuredandwhoarenomorethanfiveyearsoutoftheir
doctorate.
Eachyearover7millionchildrenlessthanfiveyearsolddieworldwide,primarilyinlowandmiddleincomecountries.
Nearly40%ofthesedeathsoccurinthefirstmonthoflife(Liuetal,2012).Improvingamother'shandhygienecan
improveherchild'shealth,however,behaviorchangeisdifficultandmothersinlowincomesettingsfacenumerous
barrierstoimprovinghandhygiene.Similarly,sanitationaccessdoesnotequalsanitationuse.InIndia,thecountrywith
thehighestnumberofpeoplewithoutaccesstosanitation,asubstantialproportionofthoseforwhomaccessis
achieveddonotuselatrines.Emotiveandpsychosocialdriversforsanitationbehavior,andeffortstomodifythose
behaviors,remainunderstudied.
Householdairpollutionisanimportantriskfactorcontributingsubstantiallytotheglobalburdenofdisease,primarilydue
torespiratorydisease.Intheperinatalperiod,householdairpollutionlikelycontributestoadversebirthoutcomes,
includingpretermbirthandlowbirthweight.However,exposuremeasurement,particularlyamongnewbornsand
pregnantwomen,hasbeenhamperedbytheuseofproxymeasures.
ThepostdoctoralfellowwillworkwithDr.PavaniRam'sresearchgroupinvestigatingdeterminantsofhandhygiene,
sanitationbehavior,airpollutionmeasurement,associationsbetweenhandhygieneand/orairpollutionandchildhealth,
aswellasmethodstoimprovehandhygieneandtheimpactoftheseimprovementsonbehaviorandchildhealth.Other
areasofinterestincludeeffectsofdiarrheacasemanagementongrowthfalteringanddiarrheaassociatedmortality.

Buffaloandanexpertinhandwashingrelatedresearch.Theprimaryresearchfocusofthefellowwillbetodevelopand
supportnovelresearchinthefieldofchildhealthandenvironmentalhealth(includingwater,sanitation,andhygieneand
environmentalhealth)inlowandmiddleincomesettings.Inthisrichpostdoctoralfellowshipposition,thecandidatewill
preparegrantproposals,studyprotocols,anddataanalysesandpresentthesefindingsatscientificmeetings,to
stakeholders,andinpeerreviewedpublications.Traveltofieldsitesisrequiredduringthefellowship.Specifictopicsof
interestwillbedevelopedbythefellow,incloseconsultationwiththefellow.Thefellowwillsupportmanagementofan
activeresearchteamofdoctoral,master's,andundergraduatestudents.
Thefellowwilldeveloprelationshipswithcollaboratorsininternationalandnongovernmentalorganizationstoexecute
impactfulresearch.Thefellowwillalsoassistinthemanagementofongoingandproposedresearchprojects.Therewill
besubstantiveopportunitiesforgettingteachingexperience,includingthroughlectures,coursedevelopment,and
mentorshipofadiverseteamofgraduatestudentsandresearchscientists,includingMPH,MS,andPhDstudents.
MinimumQualifications:
ThecandidatewillpossessaPhDinepidemiologyorrelatedfieldwithexperienceconductingstudiesinneonatalorchild
healthwater,sanitation,andhygieneairpollutionorbehaviorchangeinlowand/ormiddleincomesettingsinAsia
andsubSaharanAfrica.Goodwrittenandoralcommunicationskillsandprojectmanagementexperienceare
necessary.Applicantcannotbetenuredandbelessthanfiveyearssinceawardoftheirdoctoratedegree.
PreferredQualifications:
Thecandidateshouldhaveexperiencewithquantitativeepidemiologicstudies,includingdevelopingprotocols,designing
datacollectiontools,andknowledgeofadvancedanalytictechniquesforanalyzingepidemiologicstudiesusing
statisticalsoftwarepackagessuchasSAS.Thecandidateshouldhaveatleastoneortwopublicationsinthepeer
reviewedliterature.Priorteachingexperienceandqualitativeresearchexperiencearedesired.
