Course Description (Catalog Description):

The course provides the foundations of EM fields, static and time varying, and a study
of propagation, reflection and transmissions of electromagnetic waves in unbounded
regions and in transmission lines. Topics include the following: electric field intensity
and potential, polarization, electric flux density, dielectric constant and boundary
conditions, steady electric current and conduction current density, magnetization,
magnetic field intensity, permeability, boundary conditions, Maxwells equations and
the continuity equation. Time harmonic EM fields, wave equations, uniform plane
waves, polarization, Poynting theorem and power, reflection and transmission from
multiple dielectric interfaces, transmission line equations, transients on transmission
lines, pulse and step excitations, reflection diagrams, sinusoidal steady state solutions,
standing waves, the Smith Chart and impedance matching techniques, TE and TM
waves in rectangular waveguides. Experiments using state-of-art RF equipment
illustrating fundamental wave propagation and reflection concepts, design projects with
state-of-art EM modeling tools.
Learning Outcomes:
(1) An ability to list Maxwells equations, the wave equation, Poynting theorem,
boundary conditions and transmission line equations
(2) An ability to comprehend the propagation characteristics of Uniform plane waves in
unbounded regions and TEM waves in transmission lines
(3) An ability to comprehend the time domain analysis for transients (step and pulses)
in transmission lines
(4) An ability to comprehend the Poynting theorem and power
(5) An ability to comprehend reflection and transmission of uniform plane waves at
interfaces and TEM waves in transmission lines
(6) An ability to comprehend the propagation characteristics of TE and TM modes in
rectangular waveguides and the dispersive characteristics of these modes.
(7) An ability to solve the reflection and transmission characteristics of uniform plane
waves in multiple dielectrics and analyze standing wave patterns theoretically and
through measurements.
(8) An ability to solve reflection and transmission in transmission lines graphically using
the Smith Chart.
