architecture,andbringsthismeetingofNordicandIslamicbuilding
traditionstoDenmarkforthefirsttime.

Together,thecommunitycentreandthedistrictsnewlibraryonRentemestervej
willconstituteanarchitecturalrejuvenationofCopenhagensotherwise
neglectedNorthwestneighbourhood.
Composedvolumetricallyofanumberofdomes,theinteriorisexperiencedasa
singlespace.Thelargeandcentralisedinnercourtbringstogetherthebuildings
twofunctionsofcommunitycentreandmosque.
Apassageleadsdirectlyintotheinnercourt,invitingpassersbytovisitthe
communitycentre,whichalsoincludesacaf,bazaar,library,bookshop,
classrooms,meetingrooms,officesandundergroundparkingforcarsandbikes.
AlongTomsgaardsvej,thetransparentfacadeispushedbacktocreatean
outdoorseatingareaonthesidewalk,furtheremphasisingtheinvitation.
ThegeometricpatternofthefacadesisinspiredbyIslamicornamentation,and
varyingaperturesinthefacadecreateaninteriorilluminatedbyvaryinglevelsof
daylight,dependingonthefunctionoftheroom.Theopennessofthefacade
fluctuatesfromnearopacitytotransparencyatstreetlevel,inawelcoming
gestureofopennesstothecommunityaroundit.

OrientedtowardsMecca,thebuildingtakesitsshapefromageometricsystemofdomesandbarrel
arches.Alldomeshavethesameradiusbutarepulledtodifferentheights,creatingadynamicroof
silhouettefromtheexteriorandacaptivatingceilingscapeinside.Withinthedomesystem,three
arecutoffatdifferentheightstocreatelargeopeningstotheskythelargestoftheseisoverthe
innercourt.Twodomesaremergedinthecentreofthebuildingtoformtheprayerhall.Thismore
intimateandholyinteriorspacehasnoopeningandisindirectlylitfromthespacestoeitherside.

Theformofthebuildingsiteandthemosque'sorientationstowardsMeccaisshapedbya
geometricsystemofvaultsandhexagonsthatprovidesthedomes'location.
