LIFE LEARNING FOR EXPERT TEACHERS: RESEARCH IN EDUCATION

To be a professional teacher, we should continue our effort in learning things that
will be taught in classroom, do not ever feel satisfied just because you think that
a certain major already mastered, keep seeking and gaining experiences.

Peak performers
In teaching the peak of performances, we must have a set of rules to be
followed, the steps are;
1. Set realistic goals
It is almost impossible if we want to reach our fullest potential without
setting realistic goals. The one who knows what to be reached is our
own selves so do not let others bother our goals though it is okay to ask
others opinion but still the one who know what potential can be set to
the fullest is our own selves.
2. Set priorities
We have to know what should be put in the first line of our priority lists
in reaching our goals. Set the priority from low-priority to high-priority.
3. Take risks
Do not be afraid in taking risks while you are in the way of reaching
goals, because when you face risks and you can get through it, it means
you grow a level higher than before and you are in the state of
developing.
4. Practice principles of stress management
In reaching the peak of performance, it cannot be avoided that there
must be some obstacles that can bring us down. For example, in setting
priorities, we might bump into confusion which aspect would come first
and also in knowing our limit. Even though there is an idiom says sky is
the limit still, we have to set our limit in order to manage and reduce

our stress.
The good language teacher
In defining a good language teacher, there come several aspects
supported;
- Certified as an English teacher
- Love English language
- Has a critical thinking
- Want to develop oneself
- Self-subordination
- Never afraid to be placed in remote area
- Can easily adapt to new culture
- Professional citizenship
- Love to work harder than usual

Classroom observation
A mutual exchange between teachers in a school sometimes forgotten
whereas it can be potential in enlightens experiences for both teacher who
do observation and the one who is being observed. Both teachers can
exchange information so they can reflect what each teacher has been done
in each class. Beside classroom observation, self-observation also effective

for teachers to know what should be upgraded in oneself.

Classroom research
When teachers do asking and make a hypothesis of some possible answers
and then try out the solution in the classroom is already called as research.
Why do teacher should do research because of its benefits to the
classroom development, for example, after discovering what should be
done in the class in order to make the teaching-learning activity more
interesting. The result expected after classroom research covered in some
aspects; language learners developmental features, interaction in the
second language, classroom tasks, and learning strategies.
Classroom research is categorized into action research. How to make an
effective action research? Here are the steps
1. Convert your ideas into specific questions: this step what so called
research question, in this step you formulate the questions of your
ideas or objectives of the research.
2. Operationally define the elements of your question: here, you put the
related terms that will be used in the research so the limit of the
research will be based on these elements.
3. Determine how you will answer your question: this step is a place where
you put the data gathered and you analysis of the data in order to the
get the result of the research.
4. Interpret your result appropriately: in interpreting the data that has
been analysed, you cannot carelessly make a conclusion which can lead
to a debateable statement. In this case, you can ask some help from the
statistician or experts in interpreting the data so you can conclude the
result of the research.

As mentioned in the previous point, it is recommended for teachers to do

the observations to other teachers in order to get missing information that
we did not get in our class. Here, there are several teacher collaborations:
1. Peer coaching
Peer coaching is one teacher being a coach for his/her teacher friend in
order to upgrade teacher skill.
2. Team teaching
It is can be done in some settings; two teachers in the same class, but
each teacher has different responsibility, and then two teachers take
turn in teaching, and the last is two or more teachers take a consecutive
periodic in teaching one of students.
3. Action research (classroom research)
4. Collaborative curriculum development and revision
This is what so called MGMP who take the responsibility in developing
and do the revision of curriculum.
5. Teacher support groups
It is needed for teachers in one region to gather talking and sharing

about classroom activity from its good and what makes them feel bad.
Critical pedagogy
Critical pedagogy can be implemented to the classroom through the
following principles,
1. Allow students to express themselves openly
2. Genuine respect students point of view
3. Encourage both /many sides of an issue
