TALPAC Getting Started Guide / Runge Pty Ltd

TALPAC RELEASE 7
Congratulations on purchasing or upgrading to TALPAC release 7.
TALPAC is used through out the world for independent estimation of
truck travel times, production rates and direct haulage costs. It also
includes a very comprehensive database of truck and loader technical
specifications.

GETTING STARTED
To get started you will need to perform the following steps. These are
detailed in this chapter.
1. Install the software.
2. Start TALPAC7 for the first time.
3. Register the software by either:

Installing the hardware key for a single user licence;

Registering TALPAC7 for a rental licence; or

Registering TALPAC7 for a site licence.

4. Open or create a User truck and loader database.

5. Create a new project or open an existing project.
Once TALPAC is installed and running you will find comprehensive
help on using TALPAC and its calculation logic by either pressing the F1
key, clicking the left mouse button on the tool bar help icon or
selecting Help from the application menu.

System Requirements
For acceptable useability and calculation performance, the following
system configuration is the recommended minimum:
Processor:

Pentium 200

Memory:

32 Mb RAM

Hard Disk:

Greater than 20Mb available

Display :

800 X 600 16bit High Colour

Access to a CD drive is required for installation.

Installing TALPAC
The steps below should be followed to install the TALPAC software.
Note If you are installing TALPAC on a Windows NT system, you
must be logged on as an Administrator for that computer.
Step 1: Insert the TALPAC Installation CD into your CD drive.
Step 2: If you have AutoRun enabled, the installation will start in a few
moments. If not, open Windows Explorer, find the CD drive,
and double-click on the file called setup.exe .
Step 3: The setup program will ask for your name and company name.
Enter these and click on the Next button.

Step 4: On the following screen, you will be asked for the name of the
destination folder. This is the location where the program will be
installed.
Note It is recommended that you select the default folder, to simplify
future upgrades. The default folder is C:\Program
Files\Runge Software\Talpac7 .

Step 5: Finally, the setup program asks for the program folder for the
program icons as shown below. By default this is Runge
Software. This is the folder on the Program Files menu where
you will find the TALPAC7 icon when you wish to start the
program. After entering the folder name, click on the Next
button and TALPAC7 will be installed.

When the installation has been successfully completed, the final message
will be displayed as shown below.

Possible Errors During Installation

"Ordinal 6453 in MFC" or similar
This error only applies to Windows NT systems. The error occurs when
the person who installed TALPAC on a Windows NT system was not
logged on as an Administrator for that computer. If this occurs you
should un-install TALPAC, log on as an Administrator and then reinstall TALPAC.

"The following files failed to self register" followed by a

list of OCX files.
This error occurs when TALPAC7 is installed on a PC running Release 1
of Windows 95 that has not been upgraded. Microsoft has provided
update files that are supplied on the TALPAC7 CD.
At the end of the installation, the setup program will warn that the PC
must be restarted. Do this before proceeding with this update.
Then, use Windows Explorer to find the file
\Win95Rel1\Win95Update.Bat on the TALPAC7 CD and double
click to run it. When the update is completed you will need to restart the
PC again. After this is done, the installation is complete.

"An unsupported option was attempted"

This error occurs when TALPAC7 is starting and is caused by the same
out-of-date version of Windows 95 as described above. Follow those
instructions to update your files.

Licensing and Security

Hardware Keys
If you have been supplied with a hardware key, you should ensure that it
is plugged securely into the parallel printer port at the back of your
computer, prior to starting the program. The key has a moulding to
show which end goes into the computer. A printer cable can then be
plugged into the back of the key if required. While you are running
TALPAC, the software will regularly check for the hardware key, so it
should remain in the printer port.
You can have a number of hardware keys
from different software vendors piggy
backed together.
Existing users having an old hardware key
can continue to use it.
If TALPAC fails to find the key, run the program:
C:\Program Files\Runge Software\Talpac7\Sentinel\Setup.exe

Registration Files
If you have been supplied with a registration file for TALPAC, you will
need to register the software by referencing this file before TALPAC can
be productively used. The registration file will normally be supplied on a
separate 3.5 inch disk which should be kept in a safe place.
If you are running a computer network, TALPAC should be installed on
each PC and the registration must also be performed for each PC.

Deregister TALPAC
At some stage you may need to deregister TALPAC on your PC. This
can be done from within TALPAC by selecting Help from the
application menu, Register from the pull down menu and then
Deregister.
After TALPAC has been deregistered, you are presented with a window
which contains a returned code. This code must be noted if you are

transferring a single user registration from one PC to another. Please

contact Runge prior to attempting such a transfer.

Note This option is not applicable or available if you have been

supplied with a hardware key.

Licence Screen on Start Up

When you start TALPAC7 for the first time, the Licence screen may be
presented. If you have been supplied with a hardware key and you have
successfully installed it then you will not see this screen. In which case,
you can skip this section.
To licence TALPAC for productive use, you will need either a
hardware key or a registration file. If you do not have either of these,
the software can be used for purchase evaluation only, however it will
have restricted functionality.

Retry Hardware Key

If you have neglected to plug in your hardware key when you start
TALPAC, the TALPAC Licence window will be displayed. Plug your
hardware key into your computer as described above and then click on
the Retry Hardware Key button. The software should then continue
normally.

Register from File

If you are starting TALPAC for the first time and have been supplied
with a registration file, usually on a separate 3 inch floppy disk, then
click on the Register from File button and the dialog below is
presented.

The File Name is the full path and file name for the TALPAC
registration file, TALPAC7.RGF. Locate this file using the Browse
button. Click on the OK button to proceed with the registration. If the
registration is successful, TALPAC will now start.
Within TALPAC this facility can also be accessed by using the Register
option on the Help menu.

Register by Phone
If you have a rental licence that has expired or is about to expire and you
wish to extend your rental period, then it is possible to update your
registration over the phone. The Register by Phone button on the
TALPAC Licence window can be used for this purpose. Within
TALPAC this can also be performed by selecting Help from the
application menu, Register from the pull down menu and then By
Phone.
Please contact Runge if you would like to extend your licence.

Evaluation Mode
If you do not have a hardware key or a registration file for TALPAC,
you can still run TALPAC but it will be in Evaluation Mode. To do this
select the Evaluation Mode button from the TALPAC Licence
window.
When running in Evaluation Mode, a small number of demonstration
trucks and loaders from the equipment database will be available for
simulation. All other facilities will operate as normal utilising this
demonstration equipment.
